Chrysler Pacifica Oil Type and Capacity

The 2026 Chrysler Pacifica, gas and Plug-in Hybrid, calls for SAE 0W-20 full synthetic engine oil, and its 3.6L engine holds 5 quarts with the filter. Here is the oil the manual recommends, how to check the level, when the Pacifica tells you to change it and how to reset the oil life afterward, from the 2026 Chrysler Pacifica Owner's Manual.

The short answer

Use SAE 0W-20 full synthetic engine oil that meets Chrysler Material Standard MS-6395; the manual recommends Mopar SAE 0W-20 Full Synthetic, and an equivalent full synthetic 0W-20 must carry the API Starburst trademark. The 3.6L engine takes 5 qt (4.7 L) with the filter, on both the gas Pacifica and the Plug-in Hybrid. Change the oil and filter when the oil change indicator says so, and never go past 10,000 miles, 12 months or 350 hours of engine run time, whichever comes first.

What oil does a Chrysler Pacifica take?

The manual's fluids table lists the same engine oil for the gas Pacifica and the Plug-in Hybrid: Mopar SAE 0W-20 Full Synthetic Engine Oil, which meets the requirements of the manufacturer's Material Standard MS-6395. An equivalent full synthetic SAE 0W-20 engine oil can be used, but it must have the API Starburst trademark.

The engine was designed for synthetic engine oils, so use only synthetic, API-approved oils. Synthetic oils that do not have both the correct API trademark and the correct SAE viscosity grade should not be used.

  • Never use non-detergent oil or straight mineral oil in the engine, or damage may result.
  • Do not use chemical flushes in the engine oil; the manual warns they can damage the engine, and that damage is not covered by the New Vehicle Limited Warranty.
  • The manufacturer strongly recommends against adding any additives to the oil, other than leak detection dyes.
  • Replace the oil filter with a new filter at every oil change. The manual says to use high quality Mopar certified filters, or, if those are unavailable, filters that meet or exceed SAE/USCAR-36.

Fill to the dipstick, not by the number alone: overfilling or underfilling the crankcase causes aeration or loss of oil pressure and could damage the engine.

How to check the oil level

The manual says to keep the oil at the correct level and to check it at regular intervals, such as every fuel stop, and lists checking the engine oil level among the things to do once a month or before a long trip. The best time is about five minutes after a fully warmed-up engine is shut off, with the van on level ground for an accurate reading.

  1. Pull the engine oil dipstick and read the level. The safe range is a crosshatched zone, which may be marked SAFE, MIN and MAX, or with dimples at the MIN and MAX ends.
  2. Always keep the oil level within the crosshatch markings.
  3. Adding 1 qt (1 L) when the reading is at the low end of the range raises the level to the high end.

A new engine may consume some oil during its first few thousand miles; the manual calls that a normal part of break-in.

When to change the oil in a Pacifica

The Pacifica has an automatic oil change indicator. When it is time, an "Oil Change Required" message displays for about five seconds after a single chime, and it keeps appearing each time the ignition is placed in ON/RUN until it is reset. Have the van serviced as soon as possible, within the next 500 miles (805 km).

The system is duty-cycle based, so the interval changes with how the van is driven: frequent short trips, trailer towing and extremely hot or cold temperatures all influence when the message appears. Under no circumstances should oil change intervals exceed 10,000 miles (16,000 km), 12 months or 350 hours of engine run time, whichever comes first; the manual notes the 350 hours is generally only a concern for fleet customers.

At every oil change interval shown by the indicator, the maintenance plan for 3.6L gas and Hybrid models also calls for:

  • Change oil and filter.
  • Rotate the tires at the first sign of irregular wear, even before the indicator turns on.
  • Inspect the 12 Volt battery and clean and tighten the terminals as required.
  • Inspect the CV/universal joints, the exhaust system, and the engine cooling system protection and hoses.
  • Inspect brake pads, shoes, rotors, drums, hoses and parking brake.
  • Inspect the engine air cleaner filter if driving in dusty or off-road conditions, and replace it if required.

How to reset the Pacifica oil life

An authorized dealer resets the oil change indicator after a scheduled oil change. If someone else changes the oil, the manual gives this procedure. Only reset it after the scheduled maintenance is done; resetting at other times may result in damage from not properly maintaining the engine oil.

  1. Without pressing the brake pedal, push the ENGINE START/STOP button and place the ignition in ON/RUN. Do not start the van.
  2. Push the OK button to enter the instrument cluster display menu.
  3. Push and release the down arrow button to reach the "Vehicle Info" menu.
  4. Push the left or right arrow button to reach the "Oil Life" submenu.
  5. Hold the OK button to reset Oil Life to 100%.
  6. Push the up arrow button to exit the menu.

Secondary method: with the ignition in ON/RUN and the engine off, and without pushing the brake pedal, fully press the accelerator pedal slowly three times within 10 seconds, then place the ignition in OFF. If the message comes back when you start the van, the indicator did not reset; repeat the procedure.
