Chrysler Pacifica Transmission Fluid Guide
Looking for the transmission dipstick on a Chrysler Pacifica? There isn't one. The 2026 Chrysler Pacifica Owner's Manual says the fluid level is preset at the factory, routine level checks are not required, and the factory fill is meant to last the life of the van under normal conditions. Here is what the manual specifies, when the fluid does need attention and what to do if the transmission temperature light comes on.

The short answer
The 2026 Pacifica's automatic transmission has no dipstick: the fluid level is set at the factory and routine level checks are not required. An authorized dealer checks the level with special service tools. Use only Mopar ZF 8 & 9 Speed ATF Automatic Transmission Fluid, or equivalent; the manual lists it for both the gas Pacifica and the Plug-in Hybrid. Routine fluid and filter changes are not required, but the fluid and filter should be changed if the fluid becomes contaminated or the transmission is disassembled.
Why the Pacifica has no transmission dipstick
Under Fluid Level Check, the manual says the fluid level is preset at the factory and does not require adjustment under normal operating conditions. Routine fluid level checks are not required; therefore the transmission has no dipstick.
When the level does need to be checked, an authorized dealer checks it using special service tools. The manual also notes that an authorized dealer has the proper tools to adjust the fluid level accurately.

What transmission fluid does a Chrysler Pacifica use?
| Model | Automatic transmission fluid | Manual note |
|---|---|---|
| Pacifica (gas) | Mopar ZF 8 & 9 Speed ATF Automatic Transmission Fluid, or equivalent | Failure to use the correct fluid may affect the function or performance of your transmission. |
| Pacifica Plug-in Hybrid | Mopar ZF 8 & 9 Speed ATF Automatic Transmission Fluid, or equivalent | Failure to use the correct fluid may affect the function or performance of your transmission. |
From the 2026 Chrysler Pacifica Owner's Manual (Chassis Fluid And Lubricants, Gas Models and Hybrid Models), read October 28, 2026. Other model years can differ; check your own manual.
The manual stresses using the proper fluid: use only the manufacturer specified transmission fluid and keep it at the correct level. Using a transmission fluid other than the manufacturer recommended fluid may cause deterioration in transmission shift quality and/or torque converter shudder.
Does the Pacifica need transmission fluid changes?
Not as routine maintenance. Under normal operating conditions, the manual says the fluid installed at the factory will provide satisfactory lubrication for the life of the vehicle, and routine fluid and filter changes are not required.
The exceptions: change the fluid and filter if the fluid becomes contaminated (with water, for example), or if the transmission is disassembled for any reason.
- No additives. The manufacturer strongly recommends against any special additives in the transmission. Automatic Transmission Fluid (ATF) is an engineered product, and its performance may be impaired by supplemental additives.
- No sealers. Avoid transmission sealers, as they may adversely affect seals.
- No chemical flushes. They can damage transmission components, and the manual says such damage is not covered by the New Vehicle Limited Warranty. Only the approved lubricant should be used.

If you see a leak or the transmission acts up
If you notice fluid leakage or a transmission malfunction, the manual says to visit an authorized dealer immediately to have the transmission fluid level checked. Operating the vehicle with an improper fluid level can cause severe transmission damage.
The instrument cluster can also show the actual transmission temperature: Transmission Temp is one of the readouts in the cluster display.
From the 2026 Chrysler Pacifica Owner's Manual (Fluid Level Check caution; instrument cluster display, Transmission Temp), read October 28, 2026.
What the transmission temperature warning light means
The Transmission Temperature Warning Light warns of a high transmission fluid temperature. The manual says this may occur with strenuous usage such as trailer towing. If it turns on:
- Stop the van.
- Run the engine at idle or slightly faster, with the transmission in PARK (P) or NEUTRAL (N), until the light turns off.
- Once the light turns off, you may continue to drive normally.
Do not keep driving with the light on. The manual warns that continuing to operate the vehicle with the light illuminated could cause the fluid to boil over, come in contact with hot engine or exhaust components and cause a fire, and that continuous driving with it on will eventually cause severe transmission damage or transmission failure.

What transmission fluid does a Chrysler Pacifica take?
The 2026 manual specifies Mopar ZF 8 & 9 Speed ATF Automatic Transmission Fluid, or equivalent, for both the gas Pacifica and the Plug-in Hybrid.
How often should Pacifica transmission fluid be changed?
Routine fluid and filter changes are not required; under normal operating conditions the factory fill is meant to last the life of the vehicle. Change the fluid and filter if it becomes contaminated, for example with water, or if the transmission is disassembled.
Can I add a transmission additive or stop-leak?
The manual strongly recommends against any special additives and says to avoid transmission sealers, as they may adversely affect seals. Chemical flushes should not be used either.
What should I do if my Pacifica transmission is leaking?
Visit an authorized dealer immediately. The manual warns that severe transmission damage may occur, and that operating with an improper fluid level can cause severe transmission damage.
What does the transmission temperature light mean on a Pacifica?
The transmission fluid is too hot, which can happen with strenuous use such as towing. Stop, run the engine at idle or slightly faster in PARK or NEUTRAL until the light turns off, then continue driving normally.
