Dodge Charger Remote Start: How to Use It
The 2026 Charger key fob has one button for two systems: Remote Start on gas models and Remote Climate Activation on the electric Charger Daytona. Both get the cabin ready before you get in. Here is how each one works, from the 2026 Dodge Charger Owner's Manual: how to start it, how to drive away or shut it off, why it sometimes will not start, and what the cluster messages mean.

The short answer
Push and release the Remote Start button on the key fob twice within five seconds. On a gas Charger, the doors lock, the parking lights flash, the horn chirps twice (if programmed), and the engine starts and runs for a 15-minute cycle. On a Charger Daytona, the same button is Remote Climate Control: the car starts and stays in Remote Climate mode for 15 minutes. Push the button a third time to shut it off. To drive a gas Charger, unlock it and, before the 15 minutes end, push and release the Start button.
How to remote start a gas Dodge Charger
Remote Start (gas models) is available if equipped. The key fob's Remote Climate Activation/Remote Start button starts the engine from outside the car while still maintaining security, and the manual says that in vehicles equipped with Remote Start, the key fob will operate at distances up to 328 ft (100 m). To use it:
- Push and release the Remote Start button on the key fob twice within five seconds.
- The doors lock, the parking lights flash and the horn chirps twice (if programmed).
- The engine starts, and the car stays in Remote Start mode for a 15-minute cycle.
While the car is in Remote Start mode, the parking lights stay on, and for security the power windows and power sunroof (if equipped) do not work. Remote Start can only be used twice; the Start button must be placed in the ON/RUN position before the sequence can be repeated for a third cycle. If an engine fault is present or the fuel level is low, the car will start and then shut down in 10 seconds.
From the 2026 Dodge Charger Owner's Manual (Key Fob, page 13; Remote Start (Gas Models), If Equipped: How To Use Remote Start, page 19), read October 29, 2026.
How to drive away, or shut Remote Start off
To drive the car after a remote start, either push and release the unlock button on the key fob, or unlock it with Keyless Enter 'n Go Passive Entry at the door handles, and disarm the Vehicle Security system (if equipped). Then, before the end of the 15-minute cycle, push and release the Start button. On cars with Passive Entry, the cluster shows "Remote Start Active — Push Start Button" until you push the Start button.
Once the Start button is placed in ON/RUN, the climate controls resume their previously set operations (temperature, blower control and so on).
The engine shuts off if you push the Remote Start button again, or if it runs for the whole 15-minute cycle. To avoid unintentional shutdowns, the system will temporarily disable for two seconds after receiving a valid Remote Start request.
From the 2026 Dodge Charger Owner's Manual (How To Use Remote Start, page 19; To Exit Remote Start Mode, page 20), read October 29, 2026.
Why your gas Charger will not remote start
The manual lists these conditions, all of which must be met before Remote Start will engage:
Gear selector
The gear selector is in PARK.
Doors, hood and hatch
The doors, hood and hatch are closed.
Switches and pedals
The hazard switch is off, the brake switch is inactive (brake pedal not pressed) and the key fob Panic button has not been pushed.
Battery
The battery is at an acceptable charge level.
Warning lights
The check engine light is not present, and the Malfunction Indicator Light (MIL) is not illuminated.
Security and state
The Vehicle Security system indicator is flashing, the vehicle is in the OFF position, and the system has not been disabled by a previous Remote Start event.
From the 2026 Dodge Charger Owner's Manual (Remote Start (Gas Models), If Equipped, page 19), read October 29, 2026.
What Remote Start does in cold and warm weather
The manual lists these as features that work if your car is equipped with them:
| Feature (if equipped) | What the manual says |
|---|---|
| Front defrost | When Remote Start is active and the outside temperature is 40°F (4.5°C) or below, front defrost turns on automatically for 15 minutes or less, depending on the temperature. |
| Front and rear defrost | Turn on automatically in cold weather when Remote Start is activated. |
| Heated steering wheel and driver heated seat | Turn on if selected in the Comfort menu screen within Uconnect Settings. |
| Driver vented seat | Turns on automatically in warm weather when Remote Start is activated, if programmed in the Comfort menu screen. |
| Automatic Temperature Control | Adjusts to the optimal temperature and mode settings for the outside temperature until the Start button is placed in ON/RUN. |
| Manual Temperature Control | 40°F (4.5°C) or below: maximum heat with fresh air entering the cabin. 40°F to 78°F (26°C): your last settings. 78°F (26°C) or above: MAX A/C, Bi-Level mode, Recirculation on. |
| Windshield Wiper De-Icer | Activates when Remote Start is active and the outside temperature is less than 33°F (0.6°C). |
From the 2026 Dodge Charger Owner's Manual (Remote Start Front Defrost Activation; Remote Start Comfort Systems; Remote Start Windshield Wiper De-Icer Activation, page 20), read October 29, 2026. These features stay on through Remote Start until the Start button is placed in ON/RUN. If you adjust the climate controls during Remote Start, including the OFF button, they exit automatic override. Rain Sensing wipers do not operate in Remote Start mode (page 71).
Charger Remote Start cancel messages
| Cluster message | What it means | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Remote Start Canceled — Door Open | A door was open, so Remote Start stopped or did not start. | Close every door and try again. |
| Remote Start Canceled — Hood Open | The hood was open. | Close the hood fully and try again. |
| Remote Start Canceled — Fuel Low | The fuel level was too low. | Add fuel. |
| Remote Start Canceled — Trunk Open | The trunk or hatch was open. | Close it and try again. |
| Remote Start Disabled — Start Vehicle To Reset | Remote Start is disabled until the car is started. | Start the car, as the message says, to reset it. |
Messages from the 2026 Dodge Charger Owner's Manual (Remote Start Cancel Message, If Equipped, page 21), read October 29, 2026. The message stays in the cluster display until the Start button is placed in ON/RUN. The manual lists the message titles; the "What it means" and "What to do" columns are our guidance, based on the conditions the manual lists.
Charger Daytona: Remote Climate Activation
On Daytona models, the same key fob button runs Remote Climate Activation (if equipped), which starts the vehicle from outside while still maintaining security. The manual gives it a range of 328 ft (100 m), and notes that obstructions between the vehicle and the key fob may reduce the range and that Remote Start while plugged in may not always start the electric motor.
Push and release the Remote Climate Control button twice within five seconds. The doors lock, the parking lights flash, the horn chirps twice (if programmed), and the vehicle starts and stays in Remote Climate Control mode for a 15-minute cycle. Pushing the button a third time shuts the vehicle off. Remote Climate Control can only be used twice, and if an electric motor fault is present or the battery level is low, the vehicle will turn on and then shut down in 10 seconds.
In temperatures above 80°F (26.7°C), Remote Climate activates the climate control system and vented seats. Below 40°F (4.4°C), it activates the heated seats, heated steering wheel, heated mirrors and rear defroster. To exit, push the Remote Climate button once or let the 15-minute cycle finish; with the key fob in the vehicle, you can also press the Start button to cycle to RUN and then press it once more to turn the vehicle OFF.
- Gear selector in PARK; doors, hood and hatch closed; hazard switch off; brake pedal not pressed.
- 12 Volt battery at an acceptable charge level; key fob Panic button not pushed; system not disabled from a previous Remote Climate event.
- Vehicle Security system indicator flashing and the vehicle in the OFF position.
- Malfunction Indicator Light (MIL) off while the vehicle is in propulsion system active, and the Electronic Throttle Control (ETC) Warning Light and Electric Vehicle Service Light not illuminated.
Those are the conditions the manual lists for Remote Climate to engage. The Windshield Wiper De-Icer also activates during Remote Climate Control when it is below 33°F (0.6°C).
From the 2026 Dodge Charger Owner's Manual (Remote Climate Activation (Daytona Models), If Equipped, page 21; To Exit Remote Climate Mode, page 22), read October 29, 2026.
Remote Start safety
The manual gives these warnings:
- Do not start or run an engine in a closed garage or confined area. Exhaust gas contains carbon monoxide, which is odorless and colorless. Carbon monoxide is poisonous and can cause serious injury or death when inhaled.
- Keep key fobs away from children. Operation of the Remote Start system, windows, door locks or other controls could cause serious injury or death.
- The Sentry Key Immobilizer system is not compatible with some aftermarket Remote Start systems. Use of these systems may result in vehicle starting problems and loss of security protection.
From the 2026 Dodge Charger Owner's Manual (Remote Start warnings, pages 19 to 21; Sentry Key Immobilizer caution, page 18), read October 29, 2026.
