Dodge Charger Warning Lights Guide
The 2026 Dodge Charger Owner's Manual says warning and indicator lights come on in the instrument panel together with a dedicated message and/or acoustic signal when applicable, and that some telltales are optional or model specific and may not appear. Here is what the main 2026 Charger lights mean and what that manual says to do, starting with the ones that mean stop. That manual covers both the electric Daytona models and the gas models, so some lights relate to the high-voltage battery and charging and others to the engine.

The short answer
On a 2026 Charger, the 2026 Dodge Charger Owner's Manual says to stop for the red oil pressure, engine coolant temperature, oil temperature and transmission temperature lights, to stop safely and place the vehicle in PARK if the red Brakes Overheated light comes on, and to have the vehicle checked immediately if the red brake light stays on with the parking brake released. If the "Fire Danger! Pull Over Now! Exit Vehicle!" message appears, stop in an open area, get everyone out and call emergency responders. A flashing check engine light means immediate service is required. Many yellow lights mean a system needs service; most green and white lights show a mode is on.
2026 Dodge Charger warning lights that mean stop
| Light | What it means | What the 2026 manual says to do |
|---|---|---|
| Oil Pressure Warning Light (red) | Low engine oil pressure, with a chime. It does not show how much oil is in the engine; the oil level must be checked under the hood. | If it turns on while driving, stop the vehicle, shut off the engine as soon as possible and contact an authorized dealer. Do not operate the vehicle until the cause is corrected. |
| Engine Coolant Temperature Warning Light (red) | The engine is overheating, with a single chime; if the temperature reaches the upper limit, a continuous chime sounds for four minutes or until the engine is able to cool. | Safely pull over and stop. If the A/C is on, turn it off, shift the transmission into NEUTRAL (N) and idle. If the temperature reading does not return to normal, turn the engine off immediately and call for service. |
| Oil Temperature Warning Light (red) | Engine oil temperature is high. | If it turns on while driving, stop the vehicle and shut off the engine as soon as possible. Wait for the oil temperature to return to normal levels. |
| Transmission Temperature Warning Light (red, if equipped) | High transmission fluid temperature, which may occur with strenuous usage such as trailer towing. | Stop the vehicle and run the engine at idle or slightly faster, in PARK or NEUTRAL, until the light turns off. Then you may continue to drive normally. |
| Brakes Overheated Warning Light (red) | Shown with a message: brake rotor temperature has exceeded its set threshold, second stage. | Stop safely and place the vehicle in PARK. |
| Brake Warning Light (red), parking brake released | With the fluid at the full mark, a possible brake hydraulic system malfunction or a Brake Booster problem detected by the ABS/ESC system. It also comes on when the brake fluid level is low or there is a problem with the Anti-Lock Brake System reservoir. | Part of the brake system may have failed and it will take longer to stop. Have the vehicle checked immediately; if brake failure is indicated, immediate repair is necessary. |
From the 2026 Dodge Charger Owner's Manual (Warning Lights And Messages: Red Warning Lights, pages 98 to 102), read October 29, 2026.
The manual warns that continuing to drive with the transmission temperature light on could cause the fluid to boil over, contact hot engine or exhaust components and cause a fire, and that continuous driving with it on will eventually cause severe transmission damage or transmission failure. If the red brake light comes on together with the ABS light, it points to an Electronic Brake Force Distribution (EBD) failure, and immediate repair to the ABS system is required.
High-voltage battery messages on the Charger Daytona
Fire Danger! Pull Over Now! Exit Vehicle! The manual says this appears if the system detects the high voltage battery has overheated, which can result in a vehicle fire and the release of toxic and/or flammable gases. The high voltage propulsion system will turn off within thirty seconds; you can still steer and brake. Stop and park in an open area, have all passengers exit as soon as possible and move to a safe distance, then call emergency responders immediately. Even if you do not see flames, a fire may start at any moment. Do not attempt to reenter or start the vehicle.
Stop Safely Vehicle Will Shut Off Soon. The vehicle has determined an operational issue will soon turn off the propulsion system. Stop in a safe location as soon as possible and have the vehicle transported to an authorized dealer.
Battery Charge Low, Turtle Mode and Speed Override lights. These red lights come on when the high-voltage battery charge or estimated range is low. Some systems may be disabled and speed can be limited to help you reach a charging station; the manual says to navigate to the nearest approved charging station.
Power Battery Fault, High Voltage Coolant Low and Service Electrical System lights. These red lights point to a Power Battery System failure, low high voltage battery coolant, or a needed electrical system service. The manual says to contact an authorized dealer if the light persists or keeps coming on.
From the 2026 Dodge Charger Owner's Manual (Warning Messages, page 97; Turtle Mode, page 98; Red Warning Lights, pages 99 to 102), read October 29, 2026.
Other red Charger warning lights
These red lights point to a fault, an open door or an unbuckled belt rather than an immediate stop, but several still call for prompt service.
Air bag
Indicates an air bag fault. It comes on for two to eight seconds as a bulb check. If it is not on during startup, stays on or turns on while driving, have the system inspected at an authorized dealer as soon as possible.
Low voltage battery charge
The low voltage battery is not charging properly. If it stays on, there may be a malfunction with the low voltage charging system; contact an authorized dealer as soon as possible.
Electric power steering
A fault with the Electric Power Steering system. The manual warns that continued operation with reduced assist could pose a safety risk; service should be obtained as soon as possible.
Electronic throttle control
A problem with the ETC system. Cycle the Start button when safely stopped in PARK; if the light stays on with the vehicle running, it will usually be drivable but should see an authorized dealer as soon as possible. If it keeps flashing while running, immediate service is required and the vehicle may require towing.
Oil level (if equipped)
The oil level is lower or higher than appropriate, with a chime and a message. Continued driving may result in engine damage; add or drain manufacturer recommended oil as needed.
Plug status fault
A charging plug fault detected while the vehicle is not moving, with a message such as "Service Charging System". Try unplugging and plugging in again or a different charging station; if it continues, contact an authorized dealer.
Door, hood or hatch open
A door, the hood or the hatch is open or not fully closed. A single chime sounds if the vehicle is moving.
Seat belt reminder
The driver or front passenger seat belt is unbuckled; the light flashes or stays on and a chime sounds.
From the 2026 Dodge Charger Owner's Manual (Red Warning Lights, pages 98 to 102), read October 29, 2026. Active Driving Assist driver inattentiveness, Drowsy Driver Detection and Vehicle Security lights also appear, if equipped.
Yellow Charger warning lights
| Light | What the 2026 manual says it means |
|---|---|
| Anti-Lock Brake System (ABS) | If it stays on or comes on while driving, the anti-lock part of the brakes is not working and service is required as soon as possible. The conventional brakes keep working if the red brake light is not also on. |
| Brakes Overheated (yellow) | Brake rotor temperature has exceeded its set threshold, first stage. Avoid extended brake use. |
| Regenerative Braking Unavailable (yellow) | Regenerative braking is unavailable because of a system failure. See an authorized dealer for service. |
| Electric Park Brake | The Electric Park Brake is not functioning properly and service is required. Contact an authorized dealer. |
| Electronic Stability Control (ESC) Active | Comes on during an ESC event. If it comes on continuously with the vehicle running, a malfunction has been detected; if it stays on after several key cycles and several miles above 30 mph, see an authorized dealer as soon as possible. |
| ESC OFF | ESC is off. It is back on each time the Start button is cycled. |
| Fuel Level Sensor Failure (if equipped) | A problem with the Fuel Level Sensor, with a message. See an authorized dealer immediately. |
| Low Fuel | The fuel level has reached approximately 2 gal (7.5 L), with a chime. It stays on until fuel is added. |
| Oil Level Sensor Fault (if equipped) | A fault with the engine oil level sensor. Contact an authorized dealer for service. |
| Acoustic Vehicle Alerting System (AVAS) Fault (if equipped) | The AVAS system is not functioning properly. If the light stays on, contact an authorized dealer for service. |
| Creep Fail | A fault within the Creep system, or the Creep system cannot be turned off. |
| Service Stop/Start, Service Adaptive Cruise Control, Service FCW, Service Active Lane Management (if equipped) | The named system is not operating properly and needs service. Contact an authorized dealer. |
| Traffic Sign Recognition Fault (if equipped) | A TSR fault. Contact an authorized dealer if it remains on after restarting the vehicle. |
From the 2026 Dodge Charger Owner's Manual (Yellow Warning Lights, pages 102 to 105), read October 29, 2026. Some lights are optional or model specific and may not appear on your Charger.
Charger check engine light: steady or flashing
The Engine Check/Malfunction Indicator Light (MIL) is part of the OBD II system that monitors the engine and automatic transmission control systems. It lights in ON/RUN before engine start; if it does not come on when switching from OFF to ON/RUN, have that checked promptly.
Conditions such as a loose or missing gas cap or poor quality fuel can turn it on after engine start. The 2026 Charger manual says the vehicle should be serviced if the light stays on through several typical driving styles, and that in most situations it will drive normally and will not require towing. It also cautions that prolonged driving with the MIL on could cause damage to the vehicle control system and affect fuel economy and driveability.
A MIL that flashes while the engine is running is different. The manual says it alerts serious conditions that could lead to immediate loss of power or severe catalytic converter damage, and its caution says that if the MIL is flashing, severe catalytic converter damage and power loss will soon occur and immediate service is required. A malfunctioning catalytic converter can reach higher temperatures than normal and can cause a fire if you drive slowly or park over dry plants, wood, cardboard or other flammable material.
A flash with the ignition ON and the engine not started is a separate case: in the manual's emissions readiness test, a MIL that flashes for about 10 seconds after the bulb check means the OBD II system is not ready for an inspection test.
From the 2026 Dodge Charger Owner's Manual (Engine Check/Malfunction Indicator Warning Light, pages 103 and 104; Emissions Inspection And Maintenance Programs, page 107; Onboard Diagnostic System, pages 107 and 108), read October 29, 2026.
Tire pressure light: steady or flashing
A steady Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) light with a message means tire pressure is lower than the recommended value and/or slow pressure loss is occurring; the display shows the indications for each affected tire. Stop and check your tires as soon as possible and inflate them to the pressure on the vehicle placard or tire inflation pressure label. The manual also says not to continue driving with one or more flat tires.
If the light flashes for about one minute and then stays on, the TPMS itself has a malfunction and may not be able to detect or signal low pressure as intended. Replacement or alternate tires or wheels are one possible cause, and the manual recommends having sensor function checked at an authorized dealer after using an aftermarket tire sealant.
From the 2026 Dodge Charger Owner's Manual (Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) Warning Light, pages 104 and 105), read October 29, 2026.
Charger indicator lights and drive modes
These indicator lights show that a feature or mode is on. One is worth knowing: a white Regenerative Braking Unavailable light is normal when the battery is at 100% state of charge, while the yellow version means a fault.
| Indicator | What it shows |
|---|---|
| Regenerative Braking Available (green) | Regenerative braking is available and able to capture energy. |
| Regenerative Braking Unavailable (white) | Regenerative braking is unavailable because the battery is at 100% state of charge. This is normal and does not indicate a fault. |
| Ready To Drive (green) | The vehicle has enough power to be driven. |
| Plug Status (green) | The charging plug is detected and securely attached; it does not mean the vehicle is charging. The vehicle cannot be driven until it is unplugged. |
| PowerShot (white, green, gray) | PowerShot is enabled and ready (white), activated with maximum acceleration for a limited time (green), or unavailable while prepping (gray). |
| Drive mode lights (white or green) | Auto, Sport, Wet/Snow, Track, Drag, Custom (if equipped) or ECO mode is active. |
| Valet Mode (white, if equipped) | Valet mode is active. |
| RWD (white) | Rear Wheel Drive has been selected. |
| Run (white) | The vehicle is in PARK or NEUTRAL with the engine running. |
| Stop/Start Active (green, if equipped) | The Stop/Start function is in Autostop mode. |
From the 2026 Dodge Charger Owner's Manual (Yellow, Green, Gray, White and Blue Indicator Lights, pages 105 to 107), read October 29, 2026. Indicators depend on model and equipment.

Dodge Charger warning lights FAQ
Which Charger warning lights mean I should stop driving?
The 2026 Charger manual says to stop for the red oil pressure, engine coolant temperature, oil temperature and transmission temperature lights, to stop safely and place the vehicle in PARK for the red Brakes Overheated light, and to have the vehicle checked immediately if the red brake light stays on with the parking brake released.
What should I do if my Charger Daytona says Fire Danger?
The 2026 manual says to stop and park in an open area, have all passengers exit as soon as possible and move to a safe distance, then call emergency responders immediately. Do not attempt to reenter or start the vehicle.
Why is the regenerative braking light on in my Charger Daytona?
Per the 2026 manual, a white Regenerative Braking Unavailable light means the battery is at 100% state of charge, which is normal. The yellow version means regenerative braking is unavailable because of a system failure; see an authorized dealer for service.
What does Turtle Mode mean on a Dodge Charger?
The 2026 manual says Turtle Mode is triggered by a low estimated range: some systems may be disabled and speed may be limited to save battery so you can reach the nearest charging station.
Why is my Charger check engine light flashing?
The 2026 manual says a Malfunction Indicator Light that flashes while the engine is running alerts serious conditions that could lead to immediate loss of power or severe catalytic converter damage, and that immediate service is required.
Why does my Charger tire pressure light flash and then stay on?
Per the 2026 manual, that sequence means the TPMS has a malfunction, so it may not detect low pressure as intended. Replacement or alternate tires or wheels are one possible cause.
