Dodge Durango Tire Pressure and TPMS Light Guide

The right tire pressure for your Durango is on a label on the driver's side of the vehicle, and the Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) warns you when a road tire falls too low. Because tire pressure drops as the temperature falls, a cold morning can bring the light on. Here is how to read the label, how to make the light go off, and what each message means, from the 2026 Dodge Durango Owner's Manual.

The short answer

Use the cold tire inflation pressure on the Tire And Loading Information Placard on the driver's side B-pillar or the rear edge of the driver's door, not the number on the tire sidewall (that is the maximum). Check the tires cold with a good gauge and inflate any low tire to the placard pressure. The TPMS light turns off on its own once the system receives the new pressures; the vehicle may need to be driven up to 20 minutes above 15 mph. The manual says the tire pressure display is information only and cannot be reset.

Where to find the right tire pressure for your Durango

The proper cold tire inflation pressure is listed on the driver's side B-pillar or the rear edge of the driver's side door. That label, the Tire And Loading Information Placard, also lists the vehicle's loading capacity and the original equipment tire sizes.

The maximum inflation pressure molded into the tire sidewall is the most the tire may ever hold cold; it is not the pressure to run. The cold pressure you set must not exceed it. If your Durango has tires of a different size than the placard shows, the manual says you should determine the proper inflation pressure for those tires.

Check tire pressure cold, and why winter drops it

The placard pressure is always a cold pressure: the reading after the vehicle has not been driven for at least three hours, or has been driven less than 1 mile after sitting for at least three hours. Tire pressure may rise 2 to 6 psi while you drive. Do not reduce that normal build-up, or the tires will be too low once they cool.

Tire pressure changes about 1 psi for every 12°F of air temperature change. The manual's winter example: if your garage is 68°F and it is 32°F outside, increase the cold tire inflation pressure by 3 psi when you set the tires in the garage.

  • At least once a month, check and adjust pressure with a good quality pocket-type gauge, including the spare.
  • Do not judge by eye. Tires may look properly inflated even when they are underinflated.
  • At the same time, inspect the tires for signs of wear or visible damage.
  • Check more often when outdoor temperatures swing widely.
  • Always reinstall the valve stem cap to keep moisture and dirt out of the valve stem.

How to turn off the Durango tire pressure light

The TPMS warns you when a tire falls below the low-pressure warning limit for any reason, including low temperature and natural pressure loss through the tire. The warning stays on until the tire is at or above the recommended cold placard pressure. To turn it off:

  1. Stop as soon as possible. The TPMS Warning Light comes on, a chime sounds and the "Check tire pressure" message appears.
  2. Check the inflation pressure of each tire and inflate each one to the recommended cold placard pressure. The Vehicle Info screen in the instrument cluster shows each tire's pressure and "Inflate Tire To XX" when a tire is low. If the tires are warm from driving, you may need to add up to 4 psi more than the cold placard pressure to turn the light off.
  3. Once the system receives the new pressures, the light turns off. The vehicle may need to be driven for up to 20 minutes above 15 mph for the TPMS to receive them.

The manual's example of why the light can stay on: with a 30 psi recommended cold pressure, a tire measured at 27 psi at 68°F drops to about 23 psi at 20°F, low enough to turn the light on. Driving may warm it back to about 27 psi, but the light stays on until the tires are inflated to the recommended cold placard pressure.

The Durango spare and tire changes

The manual notes the Durango is equipped with a regular size spare wheel. The spare tire does not have a TPMS sensor, so the TPMS does not monitor its pressure. Check it with a gauge when you check the other tires.

If you drive on the spare, the TPMS Warning Light flashes for 75 seconds and then stays on, and it does so for each ignition cycle. Once the original road tire is repaired or replaced and reinstalled in place of the spare, the TPMS updates automatically and the light turns off once it receives the new pressures; this may take up to 20 minutes of driving above 15 mph.

For correct TPMS behavior, the manual says to wait about 20 minutes with the vehicle keyed off during each tire substitution. After a tire rotation, the TPMS automatically shows each pressure in the correct position.

Keep the TPMS and your tires working

Original-size wheels and tires

TPMS pressures and warnings were set for the tire size on your vehicle. Replacement equipment of a different size, type or style can cause undesirable operation or sensor damage, and aftermarket wheels can damage the sensors.

Careful with tire sealant

Aftermarket tire sealants may make a TPMS sensor inoperable. After using one, the manual recommends having an authorized dealership check the sensor.

Not a gauge

The TPMS does not replace normal tire care or warn of a tire failure, and it should not be used as a gauge while adjusting pressure. It is the driver's job to keep the correct pressure with an accurate gauge, even before the light comes on.

Why it matters

Driving on a significantly underinflated tire makes it overheat and can lead to tire failure. Underinflation also reduces fuel efficiency and tread life and may affect handling and stopping.

Snow traction devices

Clearance is limited, so the manual lists the traction devices to use for each tire size (rear axle, THULE XG-12 PRO or equivalent). Do not exceed 30 mph with them installed, and retighten after about 1/2 mile.

Rotation

Front and rear tires wear at different rates. The maintenance schedule says to rotate the tires at the first sign of irregular wear, even before the oil change indicator comes on.

Dodge Durango tire pressure FAQ

What should my Dodge Durango tire pressure be?

Use the cold tire inflation pressure on the Tire And Loading Information Placard on the driver's side B-pillar or the rear edge of the driver's door. The right number depends on your vehicle and tires, so check your own placard rather than a general number.

How do I reset the tire pressure light on a Durango?

The manual describes no reset step; it says the tire pressure display is information only and cannot be reset. Inflate the low tires to the recommended cold placard pressure; the light goes off once the system receives the new pressures, which may take up to 20 minutes of driving above 15 mph.

Why is my Durango tire pressure light on when it gets cold?

Tire pressure drops about 1 psi for every 12°F of temperature drop, so a cold night can take a tire below the warning limit. Inflate to the recommended cold placard pressure.

What does Tire Pressure Monitoring Unavailable mean?

The TPMS light flashes for 75 seconds and stays on, and that message appears, when the system detects a fault. Snow or ice around the wheels, tire chains, radio interference, aftermarket window tint or wheels without sensors are among the causes listed in the manual.

Does the Durango spare tire have a TPMS sensor?

No. The manual says the spare tire does not have a TPMS sensor, so the system does not monitor it. Check its pressure with a gauge.

Do I need to let air out after driving?

No. Pressure may rise 2 to 6 psi as the tires warm up. Reducing it leaves the tires too low once they cool.
