Dodge Durango Warning Lights Guide
The 2026 Dodge Durango Owner's Manual says warning and indicator lights come on in the instrument panel together with a dedicated message and/or acoustic signal when applicable. It sorts them into red and yellow warning lights and yellow, green, white and blue indicator lights. Here is what the main 2026 Durango lights mean and what that manual says to do, starting with the ones that mean stop.

The short answer
On a 2026 Durango, the 2026 Dodge Durango Owner's Manual says to stop for the red oil pressure, engine coolant temperature, oil temperature and transmission temperature lights, and to have the vehicle checked immediately if the red brake light stays on with the parking brake released. A check engine light that flashes while the engine is running alerts serious conditions; the manual says severe catalytic converter damage and power loss will soon occur and immediate service is required. Many yellow lights, such as ABS, Service AWD or Cruise Control Fault, mean a system needs service. Most indicator lights, such as Tow, Snow or Sport mode, show that a feature or mode is on.
2026 Dodge Durango warning lights that mean stop
| Light | What it means | What the 2026 manual says to do |
|---|---|---|
| Oil Pressure Warning Light (red) | Low engine oil pressure, with a chime. It does not show how much oil is in the engine; the oil level must be checked under the hood. | If it turns on while driving, stop the vehicle, shut off the engine as soon as possible and contact an authorized dealer. Do not operate the vehicle until the cause is corrected. |
| Engine Coolant Temperature Warning Light (red) | The engine is overheating, with a single chime; if the temperature reaches the upper limit, a continuous chime sounds for four minutes or until the engine is able to cool. | Safely pull over and stop. If the A/C is on, turn it off, shift the transmission into NEUTRAL (N) and idle. If the temperature reading does not return to normal within two minutes, turn the engine off immediately and call for service. |
| Oil Temperature Warning Light (red) | Engine oil temperature is high. | If it turns on while driving, stop the vehicle and shut off the engine as soon as possible. Wait for the oil temperature to return to normal levels. |
| Transmission Temperature Warning Light (red) | High transmission fluid temperature, which may occur with strenuous usage such as trailer towing. | Stop the vehicle and run the engine at idle or slightly faster, in PARK (P) or NEUTRAL (N), until the light turns off. Then you may continue to drive normally. |
| Brake Warning Light (red), parking brake released | With the fluid at the full mark, a possible brake hydraulic system malfunction or a Brake Booster problem detected by the ABS/ESC system. It also comes on when the brake fluid level is low or there is a problem with the Anti-Lock Brake System reservoir. | Part of the brake system may have failed and it will take longer to stop. Have the vehicle checked immediately; if brake failure is indicated, immediate repair is necessary. |
From the 2026 Dodge Durango Owner's Manual (Warning Lights And Messages: Red Warning Lights, pages 100 to 102), read October 28, 2026.
The manual warns that continuing to drive with the transmission temperature light on could cause the fluid to boil over, contact hot engine or exhaust components and cause a fire, and that continuous driving with it on will eventually cause severe transmission damage or transmission failure. If the red brake light comes on together with the ABS light, it points to an Electronic Brake Force Distribution (EBD) failure, and immediate repair to the ABS system is required.
Other red Durango warning lights
These red lights point to a fault, an open door or an unbuckled belt rather than an immediate stop, but several still call for prompt service.
Air bag
Indicates an air bag fault. It comes on for four to eight seconds as a bulb check. If it is not on during startup, stays on or turns on while driving, have the system inspected at an authorized dealer as soon as possible.
Battery charge
The battery is not charging properly. If it stays on while the engine is running, there may be a charging system malfunction; contact an authorized dealer as soon as possible.
Electric power steering
A fault with the Electric Power Steering system. The manual warns that continued operation with reduced assist could pose a safety risk; service should be obtained as soon as possible.
Electronic throttle control
A problem with the ETC system. Cycle the ignition when safely stopped in PARK; if the light stays on with the vehicle running, it will usually be drivable but should see an authorized dealer as soon as possible. If it keeps flashing while running, immediate service is required and the vehicle may require towing.
Trailer brake disconnected
The trailer brake has been disconnected.
Door, hood or liftgate open
A door, the hood or the liftgate is open or not fully closed. For a door or the hood, a single chime sounds if the vehicle is moving.
Seat belt reminder
The driver or front passenger seat belt is unbuckled; the light flashes or stays on and a chime sounds.
Vehicle security (if equipped)
Flashes fast for about 15 seconds while the security system arms, then slowly until the vehicle is disarmed.

Yellow Durango warning lights
| Light | What the 2026 manual says it means |
|---|---|
| Anti-Lock Brake System (ABS) | If it stays on or comes on while driving, the anti-lock part of the brakes is not working and service is required as soon as possible. The conventional brakes keep working if the red brake light is not also on. |
| Electronic Stability Control (ESC) Active | Comes on during an ESC event. If it comes on continuously with the engine running, a malfunction has been detected in the ESC system; if it stays on after several ignition cycles and several miles above 30 mph, see an authorized dealer as soon as possible. |
| ESC OFF | ESC is off. It is back on each time the ignition is turned to ON/RUN. It is also lit any time the Traction Mode is set to Track or Full OFF in SRT Drive Modes. |
| Service AWD (if equipped) | The All-Wheel Drive system is not functioning properly and service is required. Contact an authorized dealer. |
| Service Stop/Start System (if equipped) | The Stop/Start system is not functioning properly and service is required. Contact an authorized dealer for service. |
| Service Forward Collision Warning or Service Adaptive Cruise Control (if equipped) | A fault in Forward Collision Warning, or ACC is not operating and needs service. For FCW, the manual says to contact an authorized dealer for service. |
| Cruise Control Fault (if equipped) | The cruise control system is not functioning properly and service is required. Contact an authorized dealer. |
| Service LaneSense (if equipped) | LaneSense is not operating and requires service. See an authorized dealer. |
| LaneSense (if equipped) | Solid yellow when the vehicle is approaching a lane marker; it flashes when the vehicle is crossing the lane marker. |
| Low Fuel | The fuel level has reached approximately 2 gal (7.5 L), with a chime. It stays on until fuel is added. |
| Low Washer Fluid (if equipped) | The windshield washer fluid is low. |

Durango check engine light: steady or flashing
The Engine Check/Malfunction Indicator Light (MIL) is part of the OBD II system that monitors the engine and automatic transmission control systems. It lights with the ignition in ON/RUN before engine start; if it does not come on when turning the ignition from OFF to ON/RUN, have that checked promptly.
Conditions such as a loose or missing gas cap or poor quality fuel can turn it on after engine start. The 2026 manual says the vehicle should be serviced if the light stays on through several typical driving styles, and that in most situations it will drive normally and will not require towing.
A MIL that flashes while the engine is running is different. The manual says it alerts serious conditions that could lead to immediate loss of power or severe catalytic converter damage, and its caution says that if the MIL is flashing, severe catalytic converter damage and power loss will soon occur and immediate service is required. A malfunctioning catalytic converter can reach higher temperatures than normal and can cause a fire if you drive slowly or park over dry plants, wood, cardboard or other flammable material.
A short flash with the ignition ON and the engine not started is a separate case: in the manual's emissions readiness test, a MIL that flashes for about 10 seconds after the bulb check means the OBD II system is not ready for an inspection test.
From the 2026 Dodge Durango Owner's Manual (Engine Check/Malfunction Indicator Warning Light, pages 103 and 104; Emissions Inspection And Maintenance Programs, page 107; Onboard Diagnostic System, page 107), read October 28, 2026.
Tire pressure light: steady or flashing
A steady Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) light with a message means tire pressure is lower than the recommended value and/or slow pressure loss is occurring; the display shows the indications for each affected tire. Stop and check your tires as soon as possible and inflate them to the pressure on the vehicle placard or tire inflation pressure label.
If the light flashes for about one minute and then stays on, the TPMS itself has a malfunction and may not be able to detect or signal low pressure as intended. Replacement or alternate tires or wheels are one possible cause.

Durango indicator lights and drive modes
These indicator lights show that a feature or mode is on. AWD Low is worth knowing: the manual says it is designed for loose, slippery road surfaces only.
| Indicator | What it shows |
|---|---|
| AWD Low (yellow, if equipped) | The vehicle is in AWD Low mode, with the front and rear driveshafts mechanically locked together. Designed for loose, slippery road surfaces only. |
| NEUTRAL (yellow, if equipped) | The 4WD power transfer case is in NEUTRAL and the front and rear driveshafts are disengaged from the powertrain. |
| Trailer Merge Assist (yellow, if equipped) | Trailer Merge Assist has been activated. |
| Stop/Start Active (green, if equipped) | The Stop/Start function is in Autostop mode. |
| Drive mode lights (green, if equipped) | ECO, Snow, Sport, Tow or Track mode is active. |
| SRT mode lights (white) | Custom mode SRT or Valet Mode SRT (if equipped) is active. |
| SRT Speed Warning (white, if equipped) | Set Speed Warning is on, with the set speed shown; it turns yellow and flashes with a continuous chime when the set speed is exceeded. |
| Cruise and ACC lights (green or white, if equipped) | Cruise control or Adaptive Cruise Control is ready or set; the ACC set light shows whether a vehicle in front is detected. |

Dodge Durango warning lights FAQ
Which Durango warning lights mean I should stop driving?
The 2026 Durango manual says to stop for the red oil pressure, engine coolant temperature, oil temperature and transmission temperature lights, and to have the vehicle checked immediately if the red brake light stays on with the parking brake released.
Why is my Durango check engine light flashing?
The 2026 manual says a Malfunction Indicator Light that flashes while the engine is running alerts serious conditions that could lead to immediate loss of power or severe catalytic converter damage, and that immediate service is required.
What does the Service AWD light mean on a Durango?
Per the 2026 manual, it means the All-Wheel Drive system is not functioning properly and service is required. Contact an authorized dealer.
Does the oil pressure light mean my Durango is low on oil?
Not necessarily. The 2026 manual says it indicates low engine oil pressure and does not show how much oil is in the engine; the oil level must be checked under the hood. Stop, shut off the engine as soon as possible and contact an authorized dealer.
Why is the ESC OFF light on in my Durango SRT?
The 2026 manual says the ESC OFF indicator is lit any time the Traction Mode is set to Track or Full OFF in SRT Drive Modes. ESC turns back on each time the ignition is turned to ON/RUN.
Why does my Durango tire pressure light flash and then stay on?
Per the 2026 manual, that sequence means the TPMS has a malfunction, so it may not detect low pressure as intended. Replacement or alternate tires or wheels are one possible cause.
