Dodge Hornet MPG

How much fuel does a Dodge Hornet use? It depends on which Hornet you mean: the GT with the 2.0-liter turbo, or the R/T plug-in hybrid that can drive on electricity for short trips. This guide lists the official EPA ratings for both, model year by model year.

The short answer

The Dodge Hornet GT, with the 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder, nine-speed automatic and all-wheel drive, is EPA-rated at 21 mpg city, 29 mpg highway and 24 mpg combined for 2023, 2024 and 2025. The Hornet R/T plug-in hybrid (2024 and 2025) is rated 77 MPGe combined when running on electricity and gasoline, and 29 mpg combined on gasoline only, with an EPA-rated range of up to 33 miles (labeled Elec + Gas) after a full charge.

From the U.S. EPA and Department of Energy's fueleconomy.gov vehicle records 48657, 47955, 47275, 46711 and 46381, read November 3, 2026. EPA lists the versions as "Hornet AWD" and "Hornet PHEV AWD"; the GT and R/T names are Dodge's (see the engine details below). fueleconomy.gov listed no plug-in Hornet for 2023.

Hornet GT: 2.0L turbo, 24 mpg combined

Dodge's launch announcement describes the Hornet GT as powered by the Hurricane4, a 2.0-liter turbocharged inline four-cylinder with direct fuel injection and engine stop-start, rated at 268 horsepower and 295 lb.-ft. of torque and paired with a nine-speed transmission (EPA lists it as a nine-speed automatic). All-wheel drive is standard.

EPA rates the Hornet GT at 21 mpg city, 29 mpg highway and 24 mpg combined on regular gasoline, and the rating did not change from 2023 through 2025. fueleconomy.gov lists engine stop-start on these records.

From Hive of Horsepower: All-new Dodge Hornet Multi-energy Lineup (Stellantis media launch release) and fueleconomy.gov records 46381, 46711 and 47955, read November 3, 2026.

Hornet R/T: plug-in hybrid, 77 MPGe

The Hornet R/T pairs a 1.3-liter turbocharged four-cylinder that drives the front wheels with an electric motor on the rear axle and a 15.5-kWh lithium-ion battery. Dodge rates the system at 288 horsepower and 383 lb.-ft. of torque, with a six-speed automatic and all-wheel drive.

Because it plugs in, EPA gives the R/T two ratings:

  • Electricity + gasoline: 77 MPGe combined, the rating for driving on battery charge (the gas engine may also run). EPA lists this use at 44 kWh of electricity per 100 miles.
  • Gasoline only: 29 mpg combined (29 city, 29 highway), the rating once the battery charge is used up.
  • Charging: fueleconomy.gov lists about 4 hours to charge the battery at 240 volts. Dodge's launch announcement cited about 2.5 hours with a Level 2 charger and the R/T's 7.4-kW charging module.

The EPA range figure is labeled "Elec + Gas," meaning the gas engine can run during those first miles depending on how the vehicle is driven; fueleconomy.gov shows the all-electric portion as 0 to 33 miles.

Ratings and charge time from fueleconomy.gov records 47275 and 48657 and the side-by-side pages, read November 3, 2026. Power, torque and battery size from Hive of Horsepower: All-new Dodge Hornet Multi-energy Lineup (Stellantis media launch release).

What about the 2026 Dodge Hornet?

When we checked on November 3, 2026, fueleconomy.gov listed no Hornet for the 2026 or 2027 model years under Dodge. As of that check, the 2025 ratings above are the most recent EPA numbers fueleconomy.gov lists for the Hornet. If a newer Hornet is rated, we will update this page.

What affects your real-world MPG

EPA ratings are meant for comparing vehicles; your mileage will vary with how and where you drive. A few things to keep in mind:

  • On the R/T, charging matters most. Short trips that start with a full battery are closer to the 77 MPGe rating; long drives after the battery runs down are closer to the 29 mpg gas-only rating.
  • On the GT, the driving mix matters: it is rated 29 mpg on the highway but 21 mpg in the city, so a mostly stop-and-go commute is likely to land closer to the city number.
  • Tires and maintenance: fueleconomy.gov's maintenance tips note that correctly inflated tires and the manufacturer's recommended grade of motor oil can improve gas mileage.
