Difference Between Automatic and Manual Transmission
Before we go into the technical details, what's the difference between an automatic and a manual transmission anyway? Manual transmissions were once the only option on the road. These systems require the driver to shift gears using a clutch. Automatic systems, on the other hand, adjust gear shifts on their own based on the speed of the vehicle. Manual transmissions are still popular with Elgin drivers who want more control, while automatics are preferred by those who prefer convenience.
Automatic Transmission Mechanics
Now, how does an automatic transmission work? The process can be a little tricky, but the mechanics essentially boil down to a few key components:
- The engine links to your transmission in the bell housing, which contains a torque converter. The torque converter takes the place of the clutch on a manual model, and it ties the whole shifting process together.
- Inside the torque converter, transmission fluid flows from the impeller to the turbine. The fluid pressure activates the clutches and brakes within the internal gears - the planetary gearset.
- The planetary gearset reacts to your changes in speed by locking certain components in place. Depending on which gears are moving and which are locked, your gear ratio will change and the car will automatically shift to the right gear.
