How To Remove the Doors

Before you start taking the doors of your Jeep Wrangler, make sure you roll down the windows to protect the glass. This will minimize the risk of them breaking while the door is being removed and later stored. Once that's done, take the following steps:

If your Jeep is equipped with power windows, locks, or mirrors, you'll first need to disconnect all electronic connections.

  1. Open the door(s) you plan to remove and locate the wire harness. Depending on your model, you will have to remove either the footwell under the dash or the b-pillar to get to the wiring. Push down on the tab release to disconnect the harness.
  2. Now that the harness is unplugged, at each door hinge, loosen the lock nuts. This can be done with a T50 socket and ratchet, or a 13mm socket.
  3. Remove the door straps by lifting off the hooks. The door straps prevent the door from swinging open and banging into the fender. So, make sure you hold the door firmly when removing them.
  4. At this point you can fully remove the lock nuts. Once all the bolts are gone, you can lift the door off the hinges. You may want a partner for this step since the doors are heavy.

From there, you'll be able to enjoy a doorless ride around Elgin.

Tip: Make sure you store the doors in a safe and dry place. Also, lubing the door hinges will help the door slide off with ease next time you take the doors off your Wrangler.

Why Would I Take the Doors Off my Wrangler?

People commonly question why Jeep owners want to remove their doors. As a new-or older- Jeep owner you may be wondering the same thing. If you're driving around Bartlett or following a trail, keeping your doors off allows you to take in a full immersive driving experience like no other. Outdoor enthusiasts rave about Jeep's removable panels like the doors because they can feel the elements while enjoying their drive. Like stated before, it's one less physical barrier between you and your Jeep.

Furthermore, removing the Wrangler's doors (and other removable parts like the roof and windshield) results in a more spirited ride. Without the doors, the Wrangler is over a hundred pounds lighter. This also helps overall fuel consumption. If you're trekking down trails on an excursion, a more engaging and less burdened Wrangler accentuates the overall trail experience.
