Jeep Grand Cherokee Jack Points and Jack Location

Changing a flat on a Grand Cherokee starts with knowing where the jack is and exactly where it goes under the vehicle. The 2026 Jeep Grand Cherokee owner's manual covers jacking and wheel changing as an If Equipped item. Here is where the jack and spare are stored, the front and rear jacking points, and the steps the manual gives.

The short answer

Per the 2026 Grand Cherokee owner's manual, for the front axle place the jack on the body flange just behind the front tire, and for a rear tire place it in the slot on the rear tie-down bracket, just forward of the rear tire. Both spots are indicated by the triangular lift point symbol on the sill molding. Do not raise the vehicle by the body side sill molding. The scissor-type jack and tire changing tools are in the rear cargo area, under the load floor.

Before you jack up a Grand Cherokee

The manual lists these preparations for jacking:

  1. Park on a firm, level surface as far from the edge of the roadway as possible. Avoid icy or slippery areas.
  2. Turn on the Hazard Warning Flashers.
  3. Apply the parking brake.
  4. Place the gear selector into PARK (P).
  5. Turn OFF the ignition.
  6. Block both the front and rear of the wheel diagonally opposite the jacking position. For example, if changing the left front wheel, block the right rear wheel.

If your vehicle has air suspension, the manual notes a feature that allows the automatic leveling to be disabled before changing a tire, through the Uconnect system. It also says to disable the hands free liftgate before changing a tire or using the jack. Passengers should not remain in the vehicle when it is being raised. More on air suspension in our Grand Cherokee air suspension guide.

Where the jack is on a Grand Cherokee

The scissor-type jack and tire changing tools are located in the rear cargo area, under the load floor. The manual notes that, depending on the trim level, the jacking tool locations vary between second and third row seating models.

To get to them, lift up on the load floor handle, then remove the jack storage cover by firmly pressing the two side tabs inward while lifting up or out. Release the Velcro straps and pull outward or up on the jack and tools to remove them.

Where the spare tire is

The manual says spare tire locations vary between second and third row seating, depending on trim level. Remove the spare before attempting to jack up the vehicle.

Second row seating

The spare tire is located in the rear cargo area under the load floor. Lift up on the rear load floor, remove the fastener securing the spare by rotating it counterclockwise, and lift the spare out.

Third row seating

The spare is stowed under the rear of the vehicle by a cable winch. Lift up on the rear load floor and remove the winch plug to expose the winch access hole, just inside the liftgate opening, fit the jack handle extension over the winch drive nut and turn counterclockwise with the lug wrench until the spare is fully lowered and the winch stops.

Winch caution

The winch mechanism is designed for use with the jack wrench extension tool only. Use of an air wrench or power tool may damage the winch.

Grand Cherokee front and rear jacking points

Front jacking point

For the front axle, place the jack on the body flange just behind the front tire, as indicated by the triangular lift point symbol on the sill molding. The jack must be placed straight on with the handle facing outwards.

Rear jacking point

For a rear tire, place the jack in the slot on the rear tie-down bracket, just forward of the rear tire, as indicated by the triangular lift point symbol on the sill molding.

Not the sill molding

Do NOT raise the vehicle by the body side sill molding. Be sure the jack is placed in the proper engagement location on the inside of the panel; damage may occur if the procedure is not followed.

Fully engaged first

Do not raise the vehicle until you are sure the jack is fully engaged. Do not attempt to raise the vehicle by jacking on locations other than those in the jacking instructions.

From the 2026 Jeep Grand Cherokee Owner's Manual (Jacking Instructions, pages 280 and 281), read November 4, 2026.

Changing the tire, step by step

With the spare removed and the jack and tools assembled, the manual gives these steps:

  1. Loosen (but do not remove) the wheel lug nuts one turn counterclockwise while the wheel is still on the ground.
  2. Place the jack at the front or rear jacking point for the wheel you are changing.
  3. Raise the vehicle by turning the jack screw clockwise, only until the tire just clears the surface and there is enough clearance to install the spare.
  4. Remove the lug nuts and wheel.
  5. Position the spare on the vehicle and install the lug nuts with the cone-shaped end toward the wheel. Lightly tighten the nuts.
  6. Lower the vehicle by turning the jack screw counterclockwise, and remove the jack and wheel blocks.
  7. Finish tightening the lug nuts in a star pattern until each nut has been tightened twice.

The manual warns never to start or run the engine while the vehicle is on a jack, never to put any part of your body under a vehicle on a jack, and not to tighten the wheel nuts fully until the vehicle has been lowered. The jack is designed as a tool for changing tires only, not for lifting the vehicle for service.

Lug nut torque and after the change

The manual's wheel and tire torque specifications:

ItemSpecification
Lug nut/bolt torque130 ft-lb (176 N·m)
Lug nut/bolt sizeM14 x 1.50
Lug nut/bolt socket size22 mm

From the 2026 Jeep Grand Cherokee Owner's Manual (Wheel And Tire Torque Specifications, page 392; Jacking Instructions, page 282), read November 4, 2026.

After 25 miles (40 km), check the lug nut torque with a torque wrench to ensure that all lug nuts are properly seated against the wheel. Do not drive with the spare tire installed for more than 50 miles (80 km) at a max speed of 50 mph (80 km/h), and have the road wheel and tire repaired as soon as possible. Always stow the jack parts and the spare tire in the places provided.
