Jeep Grand Cherokee Lug Nut Torque
Any time a wheel has been removed and reinstalled, the 2026 Jeep Grand Cherokee owner's manual says the lug nuts/bolts should be torqued with a properly calibrated torque wrench and a six-sided (hex) deep wall socket. Here are the torque spec, lug nut size, tightening rules and the manual's tire-changing steps.

The short answer
The 2026 Jeep Grand Cherokee and Grand Cherokee 4xe Owner's Manual lists a lug nut/bolt torque of 130 ft-lb (176 N·m), with an M14 x 1.50 lug nut/bolt size and a 22 mm socket. Tighten in a star pattern until each nut/bolt has been tightened twice, do not tighten them fully until the vehicle is off the jack, and check the torque again after 25 miles (40 km).

The manual says to use only authorized dealer recommended lug nuts/bolts, and to clean or remove any dirt or oil before tightening. Before mounting a tire, inspect the wheel mounting surface and remove any corrosion or loose particles.
How to tighten Grand Cherokee lug nuts
The manual describes proper lug nut/bolt torque as very important to ensure that the wheel is properly mounted to the vehicle. Its tightening rules:
- Use a properly calibrated torque wrench with a six-sided (hex) deep wall socket.
- Make sure the socket is fully engaged on the lug nut/bolt; do not insert it halfway.
- Tighten the lug nuts/bolts in a star pattern until each nut/bolt has been tightened twice.
- To avoid the risk of forcing the vehicle off the jack, do not tighten the lug nuts/bolts fully until the vehicle has been lowered.
- After 25 miles (40 km), check the lug nut/bolt torque to be sure that all the lug nuts/bolts are properly tightened.
If in doubt about the correct tightness, the manual says to have them checked with a torque wrench by an authorized dealer or service station. Its outside-the-vehicle checks also include checking the lug nut/bolt torque for tightness.

Changing a tire on a Grand Cherokee
The scissor-type jack and tire changing tools are in the rear cargo area, under the load floor; the exact location varies between vehicles with second-row and third-row seating. Before raising the vehicle, the manual says to park on a firm, level surface as far from the edge of the roadway as possible, turn on the hazard warning flashers, apply the parking brake firmly, put the vehicle in PARK, turn off the ignition and block the wheel diagonally opposite the one being raised. Passengers should not remain in the vehicle while it is raised. Remove the spare tire before jacking.
- Loosen, but do not remove, the wheel lug nuts by turning them counterclockwise one turn while the wheel is still on the ground.
- Assemble the jack and jacking tools.
- For a front tire, place the jack on the body flange just behind the front tire, at the triangular lift point symbol on the sill molding. For a rear tire, place it in the slot on the rear tie-down bracket, just forward of the rear tire. Do not raise the vehicle until the jack is fully engaged, and do not raise it by the body side sill molding.
- Raise the vehicle by turning the jack screw clockwise, only until the tire just clears the surface and there is enough clearance to install the spare.
- Remove the lug nuts and wheel.
- Position the spare on the vehicle and install the lug nuts with the cone-shaped end toward the wheel. Lightly tighten the nuts. Mount the spare with the valve stem facing outward.
- Lower the vehicle by turning the jack screw counterclockwise, and remove the jack and wheel blocks.
- Finish tightening the lug nuts in a star pattern until each nut has been tightened twice.
- After 25 miles (40 km), check the lug nut torque with a torque wrench.
The manual warns never to start or run the engine with the vehicle on a jack, not to let anyone sit in the vehicle while it is on a jack, and not to get under the vehicle on a jack; take it to a service center where it can be raised on a lift instead.

Spare tire location and stowing the flat
Second-row seating
The spare is in the rear cargo area under the load floor. Lift the load floor, remove the fastener securing the spare and lift the spare out.
Third-row seating
The spare is stowed under the rear of the vehicle on a cable winch. Turn the spare tire drive nut, under a plastic cover at the center-rear of the cargo floor, with the jack handle/lug wrench and extension. The manual says to use the jack wrench extension tool only, because an air wrench or power tool may damage the winch.
Stowing the flat
Spares, flat or inflated, must be stowed with the valve stem facing the ground. Always stow the jack parts and the spare in the places provided: a loose tire or jack thrown forward in a collision or hard stop could endanger occupants.
Driving on the spare
The manual says not to drive with the spare tire installed for more than 50 miles (80 km), at a maximum speed of 50 mph (80 km/h), and to have the road wheel and tire repaired as soon as possible.
