Jeep Hill Descent Control: How It Works
Hill Descent Control (HDC) holds a slow, steady speed on steep off-road descents so you can focus on steering. The 2026 Jeep Grand Cherokee owner's manual lists it as an If Equipped feature that works in 4WD Low. Here is how to turn it on, how to pick a speed, what the light is telling you, and how it compares with Selec-Speed Control.

The short answer
In the 2026 Grand Cherokee owner's manual, HDC is intended for low speed off-road driving while in 4WD Low. It maintains vehicle speed while descending hills by actively controlling the brakes. You enable it with the HDC switch with the driveline in 4WD Low, the vehicle below 5 mph (8 km/h), the parking brake released and the driver door closed. It then activates automatically on a grade of sufficient magnitude, and you pick the target speed with the gear shift +/-.
What Hill Descent Control does
The manual describes HDC (If Equipped) as intended for low speed off-road driving while in 4WD Low. HDC maintains vehicle speed while descending hills during various driving situations, and it controls vehicle speed by actively controlling the brakes.
It has three states: Off (the feature is not enabled and will not activate); Enabled (the feature is enabled and ready, but activation conditions are not met or the driver is actively overriding with brake or throttle application); and Active (the feature is enabled and actively controlling vehicle speed).
From the 2026 Jeep Grand Cherokee Owner's Manual (Hill Descent Control, pages 260 and 261), read November 4, 2026.
How to turn on Hill Descent Control
HDC is enabled by pushing the HDC switch, but the manual says the following conditions must also be met:
- The driveline is in 4WD Low.
- The vehicle speed is below 5 mph (8 km/h).
- The parking brake is released.
- The driver door is closed.
Once HDC is enabled, it will activate automatically if the vehicle is driven down a grade of sufficient magnitude. The driver may override HDC with throttle or brake application at any time. New to 4WD Low? Our guide to using Jeep Wrangler 4WD covers the basics on another Jeep.
From the 2026 Jeep Grand Cherokee Owner's Manual (Enabling HDC, Activating HDC and Driver Override, page 261), read November 4, 2026.
Hill Descent Control set speeds
The set speed is selectable by the driver and adjusted with the gear shift +/-. The manual lists these HDC target set speeds:
| Gear selection | HDC target speed |
|---|---|
| P (PARK) | No set speed; HDC may be enabled but will not activate |
| R (REVERSE) | 0.6 mph (1 km/h) |
| N (NEUTRAL) | 1.2 mph (2 km/h) |
| D (DRIVE) | 0.6 mph (1 km/h) |
| 1st | 0.6 mph (1 km/h) |
| 2nd | 1.2 mph (2 km/h) |
| 3rd | 1.8 mph (3 km/h) |
| 4th | 2.5 mph (4 km/h) |
| 5th | 3.1 mph (5 km/h) |
| 6th | 3.7 mph (6 km/h) |
| 7th | 4.3 mph (7 km/h) |
| 8th | 5.0 mph (8 km/h) |
From the 2026 Jeep Grand Cherokee Owner's Manual (HDC Target Set Speeds, page 261), read November 4, 2026.
During HDC, the manual notes, the +/- shifter input is used to select the HDC target speed but will not affect the gear chosen by the transmission. While HDC is actively controlling speed, the transmission will shift appropriately for the driver-selected set speed and the driving conditions.
When Hill Descent Control pauses or turns off
Paused, still available
HDC is deactivated but remains available if the driver overrides the set speed with throttle or brake; the speed exceeds 20 mph (32 km/h) but stays below 40 mph (64 km/h); the vehicle is on a downhill grade of insufficient magnitude, on level ground or on an uphill grade; or the vehicle is shifted to PARK.
Turned off
HDC is deactivated and disabled if the driver pushes the HDC switch; the driveline is shifted out of 4WD Low; the parking brake is applied; or the driver door opens.
Too fast
HDC is also disabled if the vehicle is driven greater than 20 mph (32 km/h) for greater than 70 seconds, or greater than 40 mph (64 km/h), in which case HDC exits immediately.
Hot brakes
The disable list includes HDC detecting excessive brake temperature. The manual's light section adds that when HDC deactivates due to overheated brakes, it will activate again once the brakes have cooled sufficiently.
From the 2026 Jeep Grand Cherokee Owner's Manual (Deactivating HDC and Disabling HDC, page 261), read November 4, 2026.
What the HDC light means
The instrument cluster has an HDC icon and the HDC switch has an LED, which show the driver what state HDC is in. Per the manual:
- The cluster icon and switch light remain on solid when HDC is enabled or activated. This is the normal operating condition.
- They flash for several seconds, then go out, when the driver pushes the HDC switch but the enable conditions are not met.
- They flash for several seconds, then go out, when HDC disables due to excess speed.
- They flash when HDC deactivates due to overheated brakes. The flashing stops and HDC will activate again once the brakes have cooled sufficiently.
The manual's indicator-light section adds that the HDC Indicator Light (If Equipped) is on solid when HDC is armed, and flashes on and off if the conditions to use HDC are not met. For other lights, see our Grand Cherokee warning lights guide.

Hill Descent Control vs. Selec-Speed Control
The same manual also describes Selec-Speed Control (SSC), If Equipped:
What SSC is for
SSC is intended for off-road driving in 4WD Low only. It maintains vehicle speed by actively controlling engine torque and brakes, while HDC controls speed through the brakes.
Turning SSC on
Push the SSC switch with the driveline in 4WD Low, the vehicle below 5 mph (8 km/h), the parking brake released, the driver door closed and the driver not applying throttle.
When SSC takes over
Once enabled, SSC activates when the driver releases the throttle and the brake, the transmission is in any selection other than PARK, and the vehicle speed is below 20 mph (32 km/h).
SSC speeds
Set speeds run from 0.6 mph (1 km/h) in 1st to 5 mph (8 km/h) in 8th, selected with the gear shift +/-. In PARK, SSC remains enabled but not active, and the set speed may be reduced when climbing a grade.
From the 2026 Jeep Grand Cherokee Owner's Manual (Selec-Speed Control, pages 262 and 263), read November 4, 2026.
Going downhill without HDC
In its off-road section, the manual says that when descending mountains or hills, you should use Hill Descent Control or Selec-Speed Control to avoid repeated heavy braking.
If the vehicle is not equipped with either, it says to shift the transmission into a low gear and the transfer case into 4WD LOW range, and let the vehicle go slowly down the hill with all four wheels turning against engine compression drag. That permits you to control vehicle speed and direction. It also warns that repeated braking on descents can cause brake fade with loss of braking control.
Either way, the manual is clear that HDC is only intended to assist the driver in controlling vehicle speed when descending hills. The driver must remain attentive to the driving conditions and is responsible for maintaining a safe vehicle speed.
