Jeep Hill Start Assist: How It Works
Pulling away on a steep driveway or a stoplight on a hill is easier when the vehicle does not roll back while your foot moves from the brake to the accelerator. That is what Hill Start Assist (HSA) does. Here is how it works on the 2026 Jeep Grand Cherokee, per its owner's manual, and how it differs from the Jeep off-road hill features.

The short answer
Per the 2026 Grand Cherokee owner's manual, HSA is designed to mitigate roll back from a complete stop while on an incline. If the driver releases the brake while stopped on an incline, HSA continues to hold the brake pressure for a short period. If the driver does not apply the throttle before this time expires, the system releases brake pressure and the vehicle will roll down the hill as normal.
How Jeep Hill Start Assist works
The 2026 Grand Cherokee owner's manual describes HSA as designed to mitigate roll back from a complete stop while on an incline. When you release the brake pedal while stopped on an incline, HSA continues to hold the brake pressure for a short period, before releasing it.
If you do not apply the throttle before that time expires, the system releases brake pressure and the vehicle will roll down the hill as normal. In other words, HSA is a brief hold for pulling away, not a parking feature.
From the 2026 Jeep Grand Cherokee Owner's Manual (Hill Start Assist (HSA), page 262), read November 4, 2026.
When Hill Start Assist activates
The manual lists the conditions that must be met for HSA to activate:
Feature enabled, vehicle stopped
The feature must be enabled, and the vehicle must be stopped.
Parking brake off, door closed
The parking brake must be off, and the driver door must be closed.
A sufficient grade
The vehicle must be on a sufficient grade.
Gear matches the uphill direction
Facing uphill, the vehicle is in a forward gear; backing uphill, it is in REVERSE (R). HSA works in REVERSE and all forward gears, and will not activate in PARK (P) or NEUTRAL (N).
From the 2026 Jeep Grand Cherokee Owner's Manual (Hill Start Assist (HSA), page 262), read November 4, 2026.
When Hill Start Assist may not activate
The manual warns that there may be situations where HSA will not activate and slight rolling may occur, such as on minor hills, with a loaded vehicle, or while pulling a trailer.
HSA is not a substitute for active driving involvement. The manual says it is always the driver's responsibility to be attentive to distance to other vehicles, people and objects, and most importantly brake operation, to ensure safe operation of the vehicle under all road conditions.
From the 2026 Jeep Grand Cherokee Owner's Manual (Hill Start Assist (HSA) warning, page 262), read November 4, 2026.
Turning Hill Start Assist on or off
The manual says HSA can be turned on or turned off, and points to the Uconnect Settings to change the current setting. In the Uconnect system, press the Vehicle button, then the Settings tab at the top of the touchscreen to reach the Customer Programmable Features. The manual does not name the exact menu for HSA; the Safety/Assistance menu holds settings related to the vehicle's safety features, which may include options for braking, and options differ depending on the features equipped.
Remember that HSA only activates when the feature is enabled, so if your Grand Cherokee rolls back on a hill where it used to hold, check that the setting has not been turned off.
From the 2026 Jeep Grand Cherokee Owner's Manual (Disabling And Enabling HSA, page 262; Uconnect Settings, pages 139 and 140), read November 4, 2026.
Hill Start Assist vs. Hill Descent Control vs. Selec-Speed Control
The Grand Cherokee manual describes three different hill and low-speed features:
| Feature | What it does | When it works |
|---|---|---|
| Hill Start Assist (HSA) | Holds brake pressure for a short period after you release the brake on an incline, to mitigate roll back | From a complete stop on a sufficient grade, in REVERSE or a forward gear, when enabled |
| Hill Descent Control (HDC), If Equipped | Maintains vehicle speed while descending hills by actively controlling the brakes | Low speed off-road driving in 4WD Low; enabled with the HDC switch below 5 mph (8 km/h) |
| Selec-Speed Control (SSC), If Equipped | Maintains vehicle speed by actively controlling engine torque and brakes | Off-road driving in 4WD Low only; enabled with the SSC switch below 5 mph (8 km/h) |
From the 2026 Jeep Grand Cherokee Owner's Manual (Hill Descent Control, pages 260 and 261; Hill Start Assist and Selec-Speed Control, page 262), read November 4, 2026.

Jeep Hill Start Assist FAQ
What is Hill Start Assist on a Jeep?
Per the 2026 Grand Cherokee owner's manual, HSA is designed to mitigate roll back from a complete stop while on an incline by holding the brake pressure for a short period after the driver releases the brake.
How long does Hill Start Assist hold?
The manual says it holds the brake pressure for a short period. If the driver does not apply the throttle before this time expires, the system releases brake pressure and the vehicle will roll down the hill as normal.
Does Hill Start Assist work in reverse?
Yes. HSA works in REVERSE and all forward gears, as long as the gear matches the uphill direction. It will not activate in PARK or NEUTRAL.
Why did my Jeep roll back with Hill Start Assist?
The manual says there may be situations where HSA will not activate and slight rolling may occur, such as on minor hills, with a loaded vehicle or while pulling a trailer. It also needs the feature enabled, the parking brake off and the driver door closed.
Can I turn off Hill Start Assist?
Yes. The manual says HSA can be turned on or turned off through the Uconnect Settings.
Is Hill Start Assist the same as Hill Descent Control?
No. HSA helps you pull away on an incline from a stop. Hill Descent Control, If Equipped, is for low speed off-road driving in 4WD Low and maintains vehicle speed while descending hills.
What are the service department hours?
Monday to Friday 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Saturday 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. We are closed Sunday.
