How often to change the oil in your Jeep
Mopar's guidance for newer Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep and Ram vehicles: change the oil and filter when the "Oil Change Due" message appears, within the next 500 miles. Under normal driving most vehicles average around 7,500 miles between changes, and you should never go past 10,000 miles or 12 months, whichever comes first.
Mopar lists the driving habits that shorten the interval:
- Frequent stop-and-go city driving or long periods of idling
- Towing or hauling heavy loads
- Driving in extreme heat or cold, or on dusty or dirty roads
- Hilly or mountainous terrain
For a Jeep, that list covers a lot of real use: trails and gravel roads, towing a camper or boat, and Chicago-area winters. If that is how you drive, use the severe-service schedule in your owner's manual.
Oil change reminder vs. oil pressure warning
| Light | What it looks like | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Oil change reminder | An oil-can symbol, sometimes with "Oil Change Due" or "Oil Change Required" | Schedule an oil change within 500 miles. |
| Oil pressure warning | A red oil-can light, sometimes with a chime and "Low Oil Pressure" or "Oil" | Stop as soon as it is safe, turn the engine off and check the oil level. Driving on can damage the engine. |

Which oil your Jeep takes
Mopar says most modern Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep and Ram vehicles require synthetic oil. The exact oil depends on your model year, engine and platform: the Technical Specifications section of your owner's manual lists the viscosity, the oil specification approvals and the oil capacity. Owner's manuals are on Mopar.com's owner information page.
The two numbers on a bottle, such as 0W-20, are the cold-temperature viscosity (the W number) and the viscosity at operating temperature. Use the viscosity your manual specifies, don't mix viscosities, and make any switch during a full oil change. Look for the API "starburst" and "donut" symbols, and replace the filter with every change.
Mopar Express Lane uses Pennzoil motor oil, including Pennzoil synthetic. Our guide to conventional vs. synthetic oil explains the difference.
Check your oil between visits
Mopar suggests checking the level regularly, such as every month and before a long trip:
- Park on level ground.
- Wait 5 to 10 minutes after shutting the engine off.
- Open the hood and find the dipstick.
- Pull it out, wipe it clean, push it all the way back in and pull it out again.
- Read the level against the marks at the bottom of the dipstick (a crosshatched zone, sometimes marked SAFE or MIN and MAX). Keep the level inside that zone.
- If it is low, add the oil your owner's manual calls for. If it is over the top mark, have the extra drained.
Signs the oil may be low include decreased performance, reduced fuel economy, engine noise or overheating, blue or gray exhaust smoke and a burning oil smell.
Jeep oil change FAQ
How often should I change the oil in my Jeep?
When the Oil Change Due message appears, within the next 500 miles. Mopar says most vehicles average about 7,500 miles between changes under normal driving, and never to go past 10,000 miles or 12 months. Towing, dusty or dirty roads and hilly terrain shorten the interval; your owner's manual has a severe-service schedule.
What oil does my Jeep Wrangler or Grand Cherokee take?
It depends on the engine and model year. The Technical Specifications section of your owner's manual lists the viscosity, approvals and capacity, and the grade is usually printed on the oil fill cap. We use the oil specified for your engine.
Do you have Jeep oil change coupons?
Our service specials page and the specials box on this page show the oil change offers running now, with their terms and end dates. See also our oil change coupons page.
Do I need an appointment?
Appointments are encouraged, including for Express Lane, because they keep the wait short. Book online.
Will an oil change somewhere else affect my warranty?
Not by itself: under the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act a manufacturer can't void your warranty just because someone else did the work, but keep your receipts, because damage caused by the wrong oil or a bad filter may not be covered. See our Service FAQs.
