How to Program a Dodge Key Fob

Most "my key fob stopped working" problems are a dead coin cell, and you can fix that in five minutes. A new, lost or replacement fob is different: on any Dodge, Jeep, Ram or Chrysler built in the last 15 years it has to be programmed to the vehicle with the dealer's diagnostic tool. Here is how both work.

Quick answer

Current Dodge key fobs cannot be programmed by the owner. Since the mid-2000s Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep and Ram vehicles use the Sentry Key immobilizer and, on newer models, a Secure Gateway Module; a new fob is registered to the car through a dealer diagnostic session that requires the vehicle's PIN and an authorized login. Bring the vehicle, a photo ID and proof of ownership to our parts and service department; we cut the emergency blade, program the fob and verify remote start, lock and unlock. If your existing fob only works up close or the dash says the key battery is low, replace the CR2032 coin cell yourself: slide out the emergency key, open the case at the slot, swap the cell with the plus side as before and snap it shut. A few older models built before about 2008 allowed owner programming with two working keys; the owner's manual for your year says whether yours does.

Battery or programming?

If the fob worked yesterday and today only works when you are next to the car, or the instrument cluster shows a key fob battery low message, it needs a battery, not programming. If the fob never worked with this car, was bought online, or replaces a lost one, it needs programming. A fob that is physically damaged may need both.

Most fob complaints are a battery. Only a fob that has never been paired with the car needs programming, and on current models that is done with the dealer's diagnostic tool and a security gateway sign-in.

Changing the key fob battery

  1. Press the release and slide the emergency key blade out of the fob.
  2. Insert a small flat screwdriver or the edge of the key blade into the slot the blade came from and twist gently to separate the case halves.
  3. Note which way the coin cell faces and lift it out. Most Dodge, Jeep, Ram and Chrysler fobs use a CR2032; the type is printed on the cell and listed in the owner's manual.
  4. Fit the new cell the same way up, without touching the flat faces more than necessary, and snap the halves together. Slide the key blade back in.
  5. Test lock, unlock, panic and remote start. If the fob still does not work, it may need re-synchronizing or replacement; bring it in.

Our parts counter stocks the cells and will change one while you wait.

How a new fob gets programmed

VehicleWho can do itWhat is needed
2018 and newer (Secure Gateway Module)Dealer, or a locksmith with an authorized AutoAuth login The vehicle, the new fob, the vehicle PIN from the dealer system, photo ID and proof of ownership
About 2008 to 2017 (Sentry Key, no gateway)Dealer or a locksmith with a diagnostic tool The vehicle, the new fob, the vehicle PIN, photo ID and proof of ownership
Before about 2008, with two working keysOwner, on some models Follow the owner's manual procedure (typically cycling the ignition with each working key, then the new one)
All keys lost, any yearDealer Vehicle towed or driven in on a flatbed; immobilizer re-registered; allow extra time

Fobs are matched to the vehicle's frequency and part number, so a fob from another model or market will not program even if it looks the same. Buying a used fob online is a gamble: once a fob has been registered to one vehicle it often cannot be reused.

If the fob is dead and you are locked out

Use the emergency key blade inside the fob to open the driver's door (the lock cylinder is under a cap on the handle on many models). To start a push-button vehicle with a dead fob, hold the fob against the start button, or place it in the pocket the manual shows (often the cup holder or a slot in the console), and press the button with your foot on the brake.

Frequently asked questions

Can I program a Dodge key fob myself?

On current models, no. Fobs are registered to the vehicle through a secure dealer diagnostic session. Some models built before about 2008 allowed owner programming with two working keys; the owner's manual says if yours does.

What battery does a Dodge key fob use?

Most Dodge, Jeep, Ram and Chrysler fobs use a CR2032 coin cell. The type is printed on the old cell and listed in the owner's manual.

How much does it cost to program a key fob?

It depends on the model and whether the fob needs cutting. Our parts department quotes the fob and programming together before the work.

How long does key fob programming take?

Usually under an hour with the vehicle present. An all-keys-lost situation takes longer because the immobilizer has to be re-registered.

Why does my key fob only work when I'm next to the car?

The coin cell is weak. Replace it; if range does not return, the fob may need re-synchronizing.
