Ram 1500 Fuel Tank Size and Fuel Type

How big is the gas tank on a Ram 1500, and what fuel should go in it? Here is what the 2026 Ram 1500 Owner's Manual lists for the approximate fuel capacity of the Quad Cab and Crew Cab, the octane each gas engine is designed for, the ethanol limit, and how the capless filler works.

The short answer

The 2026 Ram 1500 Owner's Manual lists an approximate fuel capacity of 33 gallons (124.9 L) for the 1500 Quad Cab, 26 or 33 gallons (98 or 124.9 L) for the 1500 Crew Cab, and 26 gallons (98 L) for the 1500 Crew Cab with the 5.7L engine. The 3.6L and the 3.0L Standard Output engine are designed for 87 octane regular (91 or higher is recommended on the 3.0L Standard Output for optimum performance), the 5.7L recommends 89 with 87 acceptable, and the 3.0L High Output (RHO) requires 91 octane or higher. Do not use E-85 or gasoline with more than 15% ethanol.

The Fluid Capacities chart for gas models gives these approximate fuel capacities:

ConfigurationFuel (approximate)
1500 Quad Cab33 gal (124.9 L)
1500 Crew Cab26 gal (98 L) or 33 gal (124.9 L)
1500 Crew Cab with the 5.7L engine26 gal (98 L)

From the 2026 Ram 1500 Owner's Manual (Fluid Capacities — Gas Models, pages 371 and 372), read October 29, 2026. Other model years can differ; check your own manual.

The manual lists two capacities for the Crew Cab without saying which configuration gets which, so check the window sticker or ask us with your VIN if you need the exact figure for your truck.

What gas a Ram 1500 takes, by engine

Octane ratings in the manual use the (R+M)/2 method shown on the pump:

EngineFuel selection in the 2026 manual
3.0L Standard Output87 octane, 0-15% ethanol (do not use E-85). The manufacturer recommends 91 octane or higher for optimum performance; the manual says the increase is most noticeable in hot weather or under heavy load, such as towing.
3.0L High Output (RHO)91 octane or higher, 0-15% ethanol (do not use E-85). Premium gasoline is required in this engine.
3.6L87 octane, 0-15% ethanol (do not use E-85). Premium is not required and will not provide any benefit over regular.
5.7L89 octane recommended, 87 octane acceptable, 0-15% ethanol (do not use E-85). 89 octane is recommended for optimum performance and fuel economy.

From the 2026 Ram 1500 Owner's Manual (Fuel Requirements, pages 366 and 367; Fluids And Lubricants — Gas Models: Fuel Selection, pages 369 and 370), read October 29, 2026.

The manual adds that a light knocking sound while using fuel of the required octane is not a cause for concern, but a heavy knocking sound means you should see a dealer immediately. Using gasoline with a lower than recommended octane can cause engine failure and may void or not be covered by the New Vehicle Limited Warranty.

Ethanol, additives and gasoline quality

The 2026 manual says not to use E-85, gasoline containing methanol, or gasoline containing more than 15% ethanol (E-15), and to watch pump labels, which should say if a fuel contains more than 15% ethanol. Using those blends may cause starting and drivability problems, damage critical fuel system components, cause emissions to exceed the applicable standard and turn on the Malfunction Indicator Light.

It recommends gasolines with detergents, corrosion and stability additives, and TOP TIER Detergent Gasoline when available. It does not recommend fuel additives sold as octane enhancers, says gasoline without MMT should be used, and says indiscriminate use of fuel system cleaning agents should be avoided. If you notice hard starting, stalling or hesitation, the manual suggests trying another brand of gasoline before considering service.

From the 2026 Ram 1500 Owner's Manual (Fuel Requirements; Materials Added To Fuel; Gasoline/Oxygenate Blends; MMT; Fuel System Cautions, pages 366 to 368), read October 29, 2026.

How to refuel a Ram 1500

The 2026 Ram 1500 has a capless fuel filler on the left side of the truck, sealed by two flapper doors. The manual's steps:

  • Put the vehicle in PARK and switch the ignition off. Never add fuel with the engine running.
  • Push the center-rear edge of the fuel filler door (3 o'clock position) and release to open it.
  • Insert the fuel nozzle fully into the filler pipe; the nozzle opens and holds both flapper doors while refueling.
  • When the nozzle clicks or shuts off, the tank is full. Do not top off the tank after filling.
  • Keep the nozzle in the filler for five seconds after it clicks to let fuel drain, then remove it.
  • Push the center-rear edge of the fuel filler door and release; it latches closed.

In certain cold conditions, the manual says ice may keep the fuel filler door from opening; lightly push around its perimeter to break the ice. The manual also warns that a fire may result if gasoline is pumped into a portable container that is inside a vehicle: always place gas containers on the ground while filling.

From the 2026 Ram 1500 Owner's Manual (Refueling The Vehicle, pages 214 and 215), read October 29, 2026.

When the low fuel light comes on

Per the 2026 manual, the Low Fuel Warning Light turns on when the fuel level is less than a quarter tank and the Distance to Empty is less than 50 miles (80 km). It stays on until fuel is added, and a single chime sounds. A separate fuel level sensor warning light means a problem was detected with the fuel level sensor; if it comes on, see an authorized dealer immediately.

From the 2026 Ram 1500 Owner's Manual (Low Fuel Warning Light, page 144), read October 29, 2026.
