Ram 1500 Remote Start: How to Use It

If your Ram 1500 has Remote Start, the key fob can start the truck from outside so the engine is running and, on trucks equipped with the comfort features, the windshield defrosts and the cab warms up or cools down before you get in. Here is how to start it, how to drive away or shut it off, why it sometimes will not start, and what the cluster messages mean, from the 2026 Ram 1500 Owner's Manual.

The short answer

Push and release the Remote Start button on the key fob twice within five seconds. The doors lock, the parking lights flash, the horn chirps twice (if programmed), and the engine starts and runs for a 15-minute cycle. To drive, unlock the doors, disarm the security system if equipped, then press the brake pedal and push the START/STOP button before the 15 minutes end. Push the Remote Start button a third time to shut the engine off. If it will not start, check that the truck is in PARK with the doors and hood closed, the hazard lights off and enough fuel.

How to remote start a Ram 1500

Remote Start is available if equipped; the Remote Start button is one of the buttons on the Ram 1500 key fob. To use it:

  1. Push and release the Remote Start button on the key fob twice within five seconds.
  2. The doors lock, the parking lights flash and the horn chirps twice (if programmed).
  3. The engine starts, and the truck stays in Remote Start mode for a 15-minute cycle.

While the truck is in Remote Start mode, the parking lights stay on, and for security the power windows and power sunroof (if equipped) do not work. If "Headlight Illumination On Approach" is turned on in Uconnect Settings, the headlight animation (if equipped) plays when Remote Start is activated.

From the 2026 Ram 1500 Owner's Manual (Key Fob; Remote Start, If Equipped: How To Use Remote Start), read October 27, 2026.

How to drive away, or shut Remote Start off

To drive the truck after a remote start, unlock the doors with the key fob or Passive Entry and disarm the Vehicle Security system (if equipped). Then, before the 15-minute cycle ends, press the brake pedal and push and release the START/STOP ignition button. On trucks with Keyless Enter 'n Go Passive Entry, the cluster shows "Remote Start Active — Push Start Button" until you do.

Once the ignition is in ON/RUN, the climate controls go back to the settings you had before (temperature, blower and so on).

The engine shuts off if you push the Remote Start button again, or if it runs for the whole 15-minute cycle. To avoid unintentional shutdowns, the system is disabled for two seconds after it receives a valid Remote Start request.

From the 2026 Ram 1500 Owner's Manual (To Exit Remote Start Mode), read October 27, 2026.

Why your Ram 1500 will not remote start

All of these conditions must be met before the engine will remote start:

Gear selector

The gear selector is in PARK.

Doors and hood

The doors are closed and the hood is closed.

Switches and pedals

The hazard switch is off, the brake pedal is not pressed and the Panic button has not been pushed.

Battery and fuel

The battery is at an acceptable charge level and the fuel level meets the minimum requirement.

Security system

The Vehicle Security system is not active.

Warnings and repeats

The Malfunction Indicator Light (check engine light) is not on, and the system has not been disabled by a previous Remote Start event.

From the 2026 Ram 1500 Owner's Manual (Remote Start, If Equipped), read October 27, 2026. The manual also notes: if an engine fault is present or the fuel level is low, the truck will start and then shut down in 10 seconds. Remote Start can only be used twice; the ignition must be placed in ON/RUN before the sequence can be repeated for a third cycle.

What Remote Start does in cold and warm weather

The manual lists these as features that work if your truck is equipped with them:

Feature (if equipped)What the manual says
Front defrostWhen Remote Start is active and the outside temperature is 40°F (4.5°C) or below, front defrost turns on automatically for 15 minutes or less, depending on the temperature.
Front and rear defrostTurn on automatically in cold weather when Remote Start is activated.
Heated steering wheel and driver heated seatTurn on if programmed in the Comfort menu screen in Uconnect Settings.
Driver vented seatTurns on automatically in warm weather, if programmed in the Comfort menu screen.
Automatic Temperature Control (if equipped)Sets the temperature and mode for the outside temperature until the ignition is placed in ON/RUN.
Manual Temperature Control (if equipped)40°F (4.5°C) or below: maximum heat with fresh air. 40°F to 78°F (26°C): your last settings. 78°F (26°C) or above: MAX A/C, Bi-Level mode, Recirculation on.
Rear climate (if equipped)Stays off so the front row heats or cools faster.

From the 2026 Ram 1500 Owner's Manual (Remote Start Front Defrost Activation, If Equipped; Remote Start Comfort Systems, If Equipped), read October 27, 2026. These features stay on for the Remote Start cycle or until the ignition is in ON/RUN. If you adjust the climate controls during Remote Start, including pushing OFF, the system leaves its automatic defaults.

Remote Start safety

The manual gives these warnings:

  • Do not start or run an engine in a closed garage or confined area. Exhaust gas contains carbon monoxide, which is odorless and colorless. Carbon monoxide is poisonous and can cause serious injury or death when inhaled.
  • Keep key fobs away from children. Operation of the Remote Start system, windows, door locks or other controls could cause serious injury or death.
  • The Sentry Key Immobilizer system is not compatible with some aftermarket Remote Start systems. Use of these systems may result in vehicle starting problems and loss of security protection.
