Ram 1500 Trailer Brake Controller: How to Set Gain
A Ram 1500 may have an Integrated Trailer Brake Module (ITBM), a factory trailer brake controller for electric and Electric Over Hydraulic (EOH) trailer brakes. Here is how it works and how to set its gain, per the 2026 Ram 1500 owner's manual.

The short answer
Per the 2026 Ram 1500 owner's manual, the ITBM GAIN buttons (+/-) set how much braking power goes to the trailer brakes, from 0 (no trailer braking) to 10 in 0.5 steps. To set it, tow the trailer on a dry, level, traffic-free surface at 20 to 25 mph, squeeze the manual brake control lever fully, and adjust GAIN until it is just below trailer wheel lockup.
What the Integrated Trailer Brake Module is
The 2026 Ram 1500 owner's manual says the truck may have an ITBM for electric and Electric Over Hydraulic (EOH) trailer brakes. The module was designed and verified with electric trailer brakes and new EOH systems, and some previous EOH systems may not be compatible with it.
The manual warns that connecting a trailer that is not compatible with the ITBM may result in reduced or complete loss of trailer braking. For trailers with air or EOH brakes, an aftermarket controller may be available; check with your trailer manufacturer or dealer for the type of brakes on your trailer. Removing the ITBM causes errors and may damage the electrical system and electronic modules, so see an authorized dealer if an aftermarket module is to be installed.
From the 2026 Ram 1500 Owner's Manual (Integrated Trailer Brake Module (ITBM), pages 223 to 225), read November 4, 2026.
ITBM controls
GAIN buttons (+/-)
Adjust the brake control power output to the trailer brakes in 0.5 increments, from a minimum of 0 (no trailer braking) to a maximum of 10.
GAIN setting
Set for the specific towing condition and changed as conditions change: trailer load, vehicle load, road conditions and weather.
Manual brake control lever
Slide it to the left to power the trailer's electric brakes independent of the truck's brakes. If you also press the brake pedal, the greater of the two inputs sets the trailer braking. Only the trailer stop lamps come on when the lever is used.
Trailer Brake Status Indicator Light
Shows the trailer electrical connection status, and flashes if a fault is detected in the trailer wiring or the ITBM.
From the 2026 Ram 1500 Owner's Manual (Integrated Trailer Brake Module (ITBM), page 224), read November 4, 2026.
Choosing the trailer brake type
The manual lists four trailer brake types to select in the instrument cluster display:
| Type | Trailer brakes | Load |
|---|---|---|
| Light Electric | Electric trailer brakes | Under 10,000 lb |
| Heavy Electric | Electric trailer brakes | Above 10,000 lb |
| Light EOH | Electric Over Hydraulic trailer brakes | Under 10,000 lb |
| Heavy EOH | Electric Over Hydraulic trailer brakes | Above 10,000 lb |
The manual notes the suggested selection may change depending on your preference for braking performance, and the condition of the trailer brakes, driving and road state may also affect it. From the 2026 Ram 1500 Owner's Manual (page 225), read November 4, 2026.
How to set GAIN, step by step
The manual says to do this only in a traffic-free environment at about 20 to 25 mph (30 to 40 km/h):
- Make sure the trailer brakes are in good working condition, functioning normally and properly adjusted. See your trailer dealer if necessary.
- Hook up the trailer and make the electrical connections according to the trailer manufacturer's instructions.
- When a trailer with electric or EOH brakes is plugged in, the trailer connected message should appear in the instrument cluster display and the GAIN setting illuminates. If the ITBM does not recognize the connection, braking functions will not be available.
- Push the UP or DOWN button on the steering wheel until TRAILER TOW appears, then push the RIGHT arrow to enter it.
- Push UP or DOWN until Trailer Brake Type appears, push the RIGHT arrow, then select the proper Trailer Brake Type.
- In a traffic-free area, tow the trailer on a dry, level surface at 20 to 25 mph and squeeze the manual brake control lever completely.
- If the trailer wheels lock up (squealing tires), reduce GAIN; if they turn freely, increase GAIN.
Repeat the last two steps until GAIN is just below trailer wheel lockup. With a heavier trailer, lockup may not be reachable even at the maximum GAIN of 10. The Trailer Tow screen in the instrument cluster can also show ITBM braking output, trailer type and gain.
From the 2026 Ram 1500 Owner's Manual (Adjusting GAIN, page 224; Trailer Tow display, page 137), read November 4, 2026.
Trailer brake rules from the manual
When you need trailer brakes
Trailer brakes are recommended for trailers over 1,000 lb (453 kg) and required for trailers over 2,000 lb (907 kg).
Electric brakes need a controller
An electronically actuated trailer brake controller is required for a trailer with electronically actuated brakes. A trailer with hydraulic surge brakes does not need an electronic brake controller.
Never tie into the truck's brakes
Do not interconnect the truck's hydraulic or vacuum brake system with the trailer's, and do not connect trailer brakes to the truck's hydraulic brake lines.
Wiring
The Trailer Tow Package may include a four- and seven-pin wiring harness; pin 7 of the seven-pin connector is Electric Brakes. Use a factory approved trailer harness and connector, and do not cut or splice into the truck's wiring.
From the 2026 Ram 1500 Owner's Manual (Towing Requirements: Trailer Brakes, page 223; Trailer Lights And Wiring, pages 225 and 226), read November 4, 2026.
ITBM and Adaptive Cruise Control
If your Ram has Adaptive Cruise Control, the manual says ACC while towing a trailer is recommended only with an Integrated Trailer Brake Controller, because aftermarket trailer brake controllers will not activate the trailer brakes when ACC is braking. It also says not to use ACC when towing a trailer up or down steep slopes.
From the 2026 Ram 1500 Owner's Manual (Precautions While Driving With ACC, page 269; ACC warning, page 263), read November 4, 2026.

Ram 1500 trailer brake controller FAQ
Does the Ram 1500 have a built-in trailer brake controller?
It can. The 2026 Ram 1500 owner's manual says the truck may have an Integrated Trailer Brake Module (ITBM), If Equipped, for electric and Electric Over Hydraulic trailer brakes.
What should I set the trailer brake gain to?
There is no single number. The manual says to set GAIN on a dry, level, traffic-free surface at 20 to 25 mph by squeezing the manual lever fully, then adjust until the setting is just below trailer wheel lockup, and to change it as trailer load, vehicle load, road conditions and weather change.
What is the range of the gain setting?
GAIN adjusts in 0.5 increments from 0 (no trailer braking) to a maximum of 10.
Which trailer brake type should I pick?
