Ram 1500 Warning Lights Guide
The 2026 Ram 1500 Owner's Manual says warning and indicator lights come on in the instrument panel together with a dedicated message and/or acoustic signal when applicable. It sorts them into red warning lights, yellow warning lights and yellow, green, white and blue indicator lights. Here is what the main 2026 Ram 1500 lights mean and what that manual says to do, starting with the ones that mean stop.

The short answer
On a 2026 Ram 1500, the 2026 Ram 1500 Owner's Manual says to stop for the red oil pressure, engine coolant temperature, oil temperature and transmission temperature lights, and to have the truck checked immediately if the red brake light stays on with the parking brake released. A check engine light that flashes while the engine is running means severe catalytic converter damage and power loss will soon occur, so immediate service is required. Many yellow lights, such as ABS, Electric Park Brake or Cruise Control Fault, mean a system needs service. Most indicator lights, such as TOW/HAUL or a drive mode, show that a feature or mode is on.
2026 Ram 1500 warning lights that mean stop
| Light | What it means | What the 2026 manual says to do |
|---|---|---|
| Oil Pressure Warning Light (red) | Low engine oil pressure, with a chime. It does not show how much oil is in the engine. | Safely stop and turn off the engine as soon as possible. Once stopped, restart the engine and watch the light. If it is still on, turn the engine off and contact an authorized dealer; do not operate the vehicle until the cause is corrected. If it is no longer on, the engine can be operated, but it is recommended to take the vehicle to an authorized dealer as soon as possible. |
| Engine Coolant Temperature Warning Light (red) | The engine is overheating, with a single chime; a continuous chime sounds if the temperature reaches the upper limit. | Safely pull over and stop. If the A/C is on, turn it off, shift to NEUTRAL (N) and idle. If the temperature reading does not return to normal, turn the engine off immediately and call for service. |
| Oil Temperature Warning Light (red) | Engine oil temperature is high. | Stop the vehicle and shut off the engine as soon as possible. Wait for the oil temperature to return to normal levels. |
| Transmission Temperature Warning Light (red, if equipped) | High transmission fluid temperature, which may occur with strenuous usage such as trailer towing. | Stop and run the engine at idle or slightly faster, in PARK or NEUTRAL, until the light turns off. Then you may continue to drive normally. |
| Brake Warning Light (red), parking brake released | With the fluid at the full mark, a possible brake hydraulic system malfunction; it also comes on when the brake fluid level is low or there is a problem with the Anti-Lock Brake System reservoir. | Part of the brake system may have failed and it will take longer to stop. Have the vehicle checked immediately; if brake failure is indicated, immediate repair is necessary. |
From the 2026 Ram 1500 Owner's Manual (Warning Lights And Messages: Red Warning Lights, pages 140 to 143), read October 28, 2026.
The manual warns that continuing to drive with the transmission temperature light on could cause the fluid to boil over, contact hot engine or exhaust components and cause a fire, and that continuous driving with it on will eventually cause severe transmission damage or failure.
Other red Ram 1500 warning lights
These red lights point to a fault, an open door or an unbuckled belt rather than an immediate stop, but several still call for prompt service.
Air bag
Indicates an air bag fault. It comes on for four to eight seconds as a bulb check. If it is not on at start-up, stays on or turns on while driving, have the system inspected at an authorized dealer as soon as possible.
Battery charge
The battery is not charging properly. If it stays on with the engine running, there may be a charging system malfunction; contact an authorized dealer as soon as possible.
Electric power steering
A fault in the Electric Power Steering system. The manual warns that continued operation with reduced assist could pose a safety risk; service should be obtained as soon as possible.
Electronic throttle control
A problem with the ETC system. If it stays on after you cycle the Start button stopped in PARK, the truck will usually be drivable but should be serviced as soon as possible. If it keeps flashing while running, immediate service is required and the truck may need towing.
Generic warning
Signals the failure of one or more safety warning lights, with a message; examples include the seat belt reminder, Electric Park Brake, brakes, air bag and swivel seat. The manual says to contact an authorized dealer immediately for service.
Trailer brake disconnected
The trailer brake has been disconnected.
Door, hood or tailgate open
A door, the hood or the tailgate is open. A single chime sounds if the vehicle is moving.
Seat belt reminder
The driver or front passenger seat belt is unbuckled, with a chime.

Yellow Ram 1500 warning lights
| Light | What the 2026 manual says it means |
|---|---|
| Anti-Lock Brake System (ABS) | If it stays on or comes on while driving, the anti-lock part of the brakes is not working and service is required as soon as possible. The conventional brakes keep working if the red brake light is not also on. |
| Electric Park Brake | The Electric Park Brake is not functioning properly and service is required. Contact an authorized dealer. |
| Brakes Overheated | Brake rotor temperature has exceeded its set threshold. Avoid extended brake use. |
| Air Suspension Fault (if equipped) | A fault has been detected with the air suspension system. |
| Rear Axle Locker Fault (if equipped) | A rear axle locker fault has been detected. |
| Electronic Stability Control (ESC) Active | Comes on during an ESC event. If it comes on continuously with the vehicle running, a malfunction has been detected in the ESC system. |
| ESC OFF | ESC is off. It is back on each time the Start button is cycled. |
| Fuel Level Sensor Failure (if equipped) | A problem with the fuel level sensor, with a message. The manual says to see an authorized dealer immediately. |
| Low Fuel | The fuel level is under a quarter tank and Distance to Empty is under 50 miles, with a chime. |
| Low Washer Fluid | The windshield washer fluid is low. |
| ACC Fault, Service FCW (if equipped) or Cruise Control Fault | A fault in Adaptive Cruise Control, Forward Collision Warning or the cruise control system. The manual says to contact an authorized dealer for service. |
| Service Active Lane Management (if equipped) | Active Lane Management is not operating and requires service. See an authorized dealer. |
From the 2026 Ram 1500 Owner's Manual (Yellow Warning Lights, pages 143 to 146), read October 28, 2026. Some lights are optional or model specific and may not appear on your Ram 1500.
Ram 1500 check engine light: steady or flashing
The Engine Check/Malfunction Indicator Light (MIL) is part of the OBD II system that monitors the engine and automatic transmission control systems. It lights with the ignition in ON/RUN before engine start; if it does not, have that checked promptly.
Conditions such as a loose or missing gas cap or poor quality fuel can turn it on after start-up. The 2026 manual says the truck should be serviced if the light stays on through several typical driving styles, and that in most situations it will drive normally and will not need towing.
A MIL that flashes while the engine is running is different. The manual says it alerts serious conditions that could lead to immediate loss of power or severe catalytic converter damage, and its caution says that if the MIL is flashing, severe catalytic converter damage and power loss will soon occur and immediate service is required. A malfunctioning catalytic converter can reach higher temperatures than normal and can cause a fire if you drive slowly or park over dry plants, wood, cardboard or other flammable material.
A short flash with the ignition ON and the engine not started is a separate case: the manual's emissions readiness test says the MIL flashing for about 10 seconds after the bulb check means the OBD II system is not ready for an inspection test.
From the 2026 Ram 1500 Owner's Manual (Engine Check/Malfunction Indicator Warning Light, page 144; Emissions Inspection And Maintenance Programs, pages 148 and 149; Onboard Diagnostic System, page 149), read October 28, 2026.
Tire pressure light: steady or flashing
A steady Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) light with a message means tire pressure is lower than the recommended value and/or slow pressure loss is occurring; the display shows the affected tire. Stop and check your tires as soon as possible and inflate them to the pressure on the vehicle placard or tire inflation pressure label.
If the light flashes for about one minute and then stays on, the TPMS itself has a malfunction and may not be able to detect or signal low pressure as intended. Replacement or alternate tires or wheels are one possible cause. Our Ram 1500 tire pressure guide covers pressures and the TPMS in more detail.
From the 2026 Ram 1500 Owner's Manual (Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) Warning Light, page 145), read October 28, 2026.
Ram 1500 indicator lights and drive modes
Most of these indicator lights show that a feature or mode is on. Payload Protection is the exception to watch: it means the truck may be over its maximum payload.
| Indicator | What it shows |
|---|---|
| TOW/HAUL (yellow, if equipped) | TOW/HAUL mode is selected. |
| Rear Axle Lock (yellow, if equipped) | The rear axle lock has been activated. |
| Air Suspension modes, lowering and raising (yellow, if equipped) | The current air suspension level, such as Entry/Exit, Aero, Off Road, Off Road 1 or Off Road 2; the lowering or raising light blinks while the ride height is changing. |
| Air Suspension Payload Protection (yellow, if equipped) | The maximum payload may have been exceeded or load leveling cannot be achieved at the current ride height; air suspension adjustment is limited. |
| Stop/Start Active (green, if equipped) | The Stop/Start function is in Autostop mode. |
| Selec-Speed Control (white, if equipped) | SSC is on; solid when armed. It can only be armed with the transfer case in 4WD Low and the vehicle under 20 mph; otherwise the light flashes. |
| Drive mode lights (if equipped) | Baja, Custom, Mud/Sand, Rock, Snow, Sport, Tow or Valet mode is active. |
From the 2026 Ram 1500 Owner's Manual (Yellow, Green, White and Blue Indicator Lights; Drive Mode Indicator Lights, pages 146 to 148), read October 28, 2026. Indicators depend on equipment.

Ram 1500 warning lights FAQ
Which Ram 1500 warning lights mean I should stop driving?
The 2026 Ram 1500 manual says to stop for the red oil pressure, engine coolant temperature, oil temperature and transmission temperature lights, and to have the truck checked immediately if the red brake light stays on with the parking brake released.
Why is my Ram 1500 check engine light flashing?
The 2026 manual says a Malfunction Indicator Light that flashes while the engine is running alerts serious conditions that could lead to immediate loss of power or severe catalytic converter damage, and that immediate service is required.
What does the Generic Warning Light mean on a Ram 1500?
Per the 2026 manual, it signals the failure of one or more safety warning lights, shown with a message, for systems such as the seat belt reminder, Electric Park Brake, brakes, air bag and swivel seat. Contact an authorized dealer immediately for service.
Does the oil pressure light mean my Ram is low on oil?
Not necessarily. The 2026 manual says it indicates low engine oil pressure and does not show how much oil is in the engine; the oil level must be checked under the hood. Stop safely and follow the steps in the table above.
What does the Brakes Overheated light mean?
In the 2026 manual, it means the brake rotor temperature has exceeded its set threshold. Avoid extended brake use.
Why does my Ram 1500 tire pressure light flash and then stay on?
Per the 2026 manual, that sequence means the TPMS has a malfunction, so it may not detect low pressure as intended. Replacement or alternate tires or wheels are one possible cause.
