Ram 1500 4WD Auto vs. 4WD High in Snow

A Ram 1500 4x4 has an electronically shifted transfer case with a switch on the instrument panel. Which positions you get depends on the transfer case your truck has. This guide explains what 2WD, 4WD Auto, 4WD High and 4WD Low do, when to use each one in an Illinois winter, how to shift, and what to do if you get stuck, based on the 2026 Ram 1500 Owner's Manual.

The short answer

If your Ram 1500 has 4WD Auto, it is the position for changing winter roads: the manual says it may be used during varying road conditions. Use 4WD High on roads that stay snow-covered or icy, and 4WD Low for slow, heavy going, never above 25 mph. On dry pavement, go back to 2WD (an RHO stays in 4WD Auto), because the manual says 4WD High and 4WD Low on dry, hard surfaces can increase tire wear and damage driveline parts.

Ram 1500 transfer case positions

The 2026 owner's manual lists a four-position on-demand transfer case (2WD, 4WD High, 4WD Low and Neutral) and a five-position on-demand transfer case that adds 4WD Auto. The RHO has its own four-position case: 4WD Auto, 4WD High, 4WD Low and Neutral.

PositionWhat it doesUse it for
2WDDrives the rear wheels only; the front axle is not engaged, which the manual says gives better fuel economy.Normal street and highway driving on dry, hard-surfaced roads.
4WD Auto (five-position case and RHO)Sends power to the front wheels automatically when the truck senses a loss of traction. On the RHO it always sends some power to the front and adjusts the split.Varying road conditions, such as a winter day of wet, dry and snowy stretches.
4WD HighEngages four-wheel drive so the front and rear wheels turn at the same speed.Loose or slippery surfaces only.
4WD LowLow-range four-wheel drive with more torque than 4WD High; engine speed is about three times that of 2WD or 4WD High at the same road speed.Slow going and maximum pulling power on loose or slippery surfaces. Do not exceed 25 mph (55 mph on the RHO, per the manual).
N (Neutral)Disconnects both driveshafts from the engine and transmission.Flat towing behind another vehicle only. Always set the parking brake.

Which 4WD position to use in an Illinois winter

Dry, clear roads

2WD, which the manual recommends for normal driving on dry, hard-surfaced roads. The RHO has no 2WD position; the manual says its case is designed to be driven in 4WD Auto in normal conditions on dry roads.

Patchy snow, slush and salt

4WD Auto, if equipped. It is meant for varying road conditions; on the five-position case it sends power to the front wheels when the truck senses a loss of traction.

Snow-covered or icy roads

4WD High. It sends torque to the front driveshaft so the front and rear wheels turn at the same speed, for traction on loose or slippery surfaces. Shift out of it when the pavement clears.

Deep snow and unplowed lots

4WD Low, for slow going and maximum pulling power on loose or slippery surfaces, never above 25 mph. Watch the engine speed, since it runs about three times faster than in 4WD High at the same road speed.

The manual warns that because four-wheel drive improves traction, there is a tendency to exceed safe turning and stopping speeds. Do not go faster than road conditions permit.

How to shift your Ram 1500 into 4WD

Push the position you want on the 4WD control switch. The selected light flashes until the shift is complete and then stays on.

  • 2WD to 4WD High or 4WD Auto (and back): you can shift while stopped or moving. While moving, the shift goes faster if you briefly lift off the accelerator. If stopped, the ignition must be in ON/RUN.
  • Into or out of 4WD Low: with the engine running, slow to 2 to 3 mph (or stop), shift the transmission to NEUTRAL, push the 4WD Low position, wait until its light stays on, then shift back into gear. Some gear noise is normal.
  • If the shift will not finish: the system will not shift between 2WD and 4WD while the wheels are spinning. Slow down and stop the wheels from spinning. To retry, push the current position, wait five seconds and select again.
  • SERV 4WD light: if it stays on after start-up or comes on while driving, the four-wheel drive system needs service. Always set the parking brake when you shut the truck off with this light on.

Steps from the 2026 Ram 1500 Owner's Manual. Use tires of equal size, type and circumference on all four wheels; the manual says a difference can damage the drivetrain.

Snow Mode and RHO drive modes

On trucks with Drive Modes, selecting Snow on the touchscreen sets the transmission to shift earlier, keeping wheel torque low to reduce wheel slip, with Stability Control set to Full. Auto Mode comes back on at ignition ON in 4WD Auto or 4WD High.

On the Ram 1500 RHO, Snow mode splits torque equally between the front and rear wheels, shifts early and softens throttle response. The manual says it is meant to assist and is not a replacement for safe driving in bad weather; it resets to Auto at the next ignition cycle unless the truck is in 4WD Low.

In heavy snow, the manual advises not to shift to a lower gear than you need to keep moving, because over-revving can spin the wheels. If you start to slow to a stop, turn the steering wheel no more than a quarter turn quickly back and forth while still on the throttle, to find fresh traction. On icy or slippery roads, do not downshift at high engine speed or road speed; engine braking can cause a skid.

If your Ram gets stuck in snow

The manual describes rocking the truck free:

  1. Turn the steering wheel right and left to clear the area around the front wheels.
  2. Push the ESC OFF button to put Electronic Stability Control in Partial Off. Restore ESC On once you are free.
  3. Shift back and forth between DRIVE and REVERSE while gently pressing the accelerator, with the least pedal that keeps the rocking going. The shifts only work at wheel speeds of 5 mph or less.
  4. While rocking, do not spin the wheels faster than 15 mph, and after every five rocking cycles let the engine idle in NEUTRAL for at least one minute to keep the transmission from overheating.

Warnings from the manual: when rocking between DRIVE and REVERSE, keep wheel speed under 15 mph or drivetrain damage may result. In any case, never spin the wheels faster than 30 mph or for longer than 30 seconds without stopping, and keep everyone away from a spinning wheel; a tire could explode. Racing the engine or spinning the wheels can overheat the transmission.

Winter prep for a Ram 1500

Engine block heater, if equipped

Warms the coolant for quicker cold starts. The manual says to use a ground-fault protected 110-115 volt outlet with a grounded three-wire extension cord, and to unplug the cord before you drive.

Chains and cables

The manual lists which tire sizes and axles can take snow traction devices, by trim, and says the device must be the proper size for the tire. It lists no chainable axle for the Rebel, Tungsten and RHO. Check the table for your truck before you buy.

Matching tires

The manual says proper four-wheel drive operation depends on tires of equal size, type and circumference on each wheel, and a difference can damage the drivetrain.

Battery and service

Ram 1500 4WD and winter FAQ

Should I drive my Ram 1500 in 4WD Auto or 4WD High in snow?

If your truck has 4WD Auto, use it for changing winter conditions; on the five-position transfer case it sends power to the front wheels when the truck senses a loss of traction. Use 4WD High on roads that stay snow-covered or icy, and shift out of it when the pavement is dry.

Can I leave my Ram in 4WD High on dry roads?

No. The owner's manual says 4WD High and 4WD Low are designed for loose, slippery surfaces only, and using them on dry, hard surfaces can increase tire wear and damage driveline components.

Can I shift into 4WD while driving?

Yes, between 2WD and 4WD High or 4WD Auto, while stopped or moving, as long as the wheels are not spinning. Shifting into or out of 4WD Low needs the truck rolling at 2 to 3 mph or stopped, with the transmission in NEUTRAL.

How fast can I go in 4WD Low?

No more than 25 mph, according to the 2026 Ram 1500 Owner's Manual. The manual gives 55 mph for the RHO's transfer case.

Does my Ram 1500 have 4WD Auto?

It depends on the transfer case. The manual lists 4WD Auto on the five-position transfer case and on the RHO's transfer case; the four-position case has 2WD, 4WD High, 4WD Low and Neutral.

What does the SERV 4WD light mean?

The four-wheel drive system is not working properly and needs service. Set the parking brake whenever you shut the truck off with the light on.

How do I get my Ram unstuck from snow?

Turn the steering wheel right and left to clear the area around the front wheels, put ESC in Partial Off, and rock the truck between DRIVE and REVERSE with light throttle. Keep wheel speed under 15 mph while rocking, and idle in NEUTRAL for a minute after every five cycles.
