Dodge Durango Towing Capacity: 2020 and Today
The Durango is the three-row SUV people buy to tow. This page was written for the 2020 model and still answers that question for used shoppers, but the Durango has changed under the hood since: for 2027 every trim carries a HEMI V-8. Here is what each engine tows, then and now, and what the Tow n Go package adds.

All figures require the Trailer Tow Group IV (Class IV receiver, 7- and 4-pin wiring, heavy-duty engine cooling, load-leveling rear suspension on V-8 models). A Durango without the package is limited to its bumper rating. Cargo volume is 85 cubic feet behind the front seats.

What Tow n Go adds
Tow n Go is the package that takes a 5.7-liter Durango from 7,400 lb (2020 R/T) or 7,200 lb (2027 GT HEMI) to the 8,700-lb ceiling. It borrows the SRT's hardware: the adaptive damping suspension with a Tow mode, the SRT-sized Brembo front brakes, 20-inch wheels with all-season performance tires, the 3.09 or 3.70 rear axle depending on year, the active exhaust and the heavy-duty cooling. Tow mode holds gears longer, firms the dampers and recalibrates the stability control for the trailer. It also comes with the trailer-sway control, integrated trailer brake controller and the 7-pin connector you need for a travel trailer with electric brakes.
Towing well with a Durango
- Weigh the trailer loaded. The rating assumes 10 to 15 percent of the trailer weight on the hitch (870 lb at the 8,700-lb limit) and that tongue weight counts against the Durango's payload.
- Check the gross combined weight rating on the door-jamb label; passengers and cargo reduce what you can tow.
- Use the integrated brake controller for any trailer over 1,000 lb; Illinois requires brakes on trailers over 3,000 lb.
- Fill the tires to the door-label towing pressure and check the trailer tires every trip.
- Expect fuel economy in the low teens when towing with the HEMI; plan stops accordingly on the 24.6-gallon tank.
- Have the transmission and rear-axle fluid changed on the severe-service schedule if you tow regularly; our service department can set the intervals.
