2023 Jeep Grand Cherokee Overview

The 2023 model year was the second for the current Grand Cherokee and the first full year for the 4xe plug-in hybrid. It is now a three-year-old used SUV with a wide trim spread, so this page lays out what each version had, what changed during the year, and what to look at before you buy one.

Quick answer

The 2023 Jeep Grand Cherokee came three ways: the two-row Grand Cherokee (Laredo, Altitude, Limited, Overland, Summit, Summit Reserve), the three-row Grand Cherokee L in the same trims, and the 4xe plug-in hybrid (4xe, 30th Anniversary, Trailhawk, Overland, Summit, Summit Reserve), which was the only way to get a Trailhawk. The standard 3.6-liter V-6 makes 293 hp and tows up to 6,200 lb; the 5.7-liter HEMI V-8 (357 hp, 7,200 lb) was dropped from the two-row early in the model year and stayed only on upper L trims; the 4xe pairs a 2.0-liter turbo with two motors for 375 hp, 25 miles of electric range and 6,000 lb of towing. Every 2023 had an eight-speed automatic and Uconnect 5.

The three versions

Grand Cherokee (two-row)

Five seats, 3.6-liter V-6 on every trim after the V-8 was withdrawn. Quadra-Trac I 4x4 on Laredo and Altitude, Quadra-Trac II on Limited and up, Quadra-Drive II with a rear electronic limited-slip on Overland and Summit. Quadra-Lift air suspension on Overland and Summit.

Grand Cherokee L (three-row)

Same trims with a longer wheelbase and a third row. The only 2023 Grand Cherokee that kept the 5.7-liter HEMI V-8, offered on Overland, Summit and Summit Reserve.

Grand Cherokee 4xe

Plug-in hybrid, 4x4 only. The 2023 Trailhawk was exclusive to the 4xe, and a 30th Anniversary Edition marked three decades of the nameplate. Hybrid, Electric and eSave drive modes.

A 2023 two-row listed with a V-8 is an early build. Check the VIN and the window sticker, and expect it to carry a premium over a V-6 car with the same trim and miles.

What changed during 2023

  • The 5.7-liter V-8 was quietly removed from the two-row Grand Cherokee order guide in late 2022; it remained on the L's top three trims.
  • The Trailhawk became 4xe-only, with Gloss Black exterior accents replacing the previous grey.
  • The 30th Anniversary Edition was a 2023-only 4xe package; it became the Anniversary Edition for 2024.
  • Jeep quoted more than 110 safety and security features, with a 10.25-inch driver display and a 10.1-inch Uconnect 5 touchscreen on most trims and an available front passenger screen.

Checking a used 2023

  1. Decode the trim from the window sticker or VIN. Altitude and Limited look alike from the outside; the 4x4 system and Quadra-Lift are what change the price.
  2. On a 4xe, ask for the charging history and check battery state of health in the Uconnect screen; a 4xe that has never been plugged in has been running as a heavy hybrid.
  3. Look for open recalls and software updates. Our service department runs the VIN through Mopar's system at no charge.
  4. Verify the tow package (Class IV hitch, trailer wiring, and on the V-8 the heavy-duty cooling) if towing matters to you.
  5. Check tire wear across all four corners on 4x4 models and ask when the transfer-case fluid was last changed.
  6. Get the remaining factory warranty in writing: 3 years/36,000 miles basic and 5 years/60,000 miles powertrain from the original in-service date, 8 years/100,000 miles on the 4xe battery.
