How to Jumpstart a Car

1000 × 337Learning how to jump a car doesn't require much. If you are unfamiliar with your car's inner workings, you might want to pull out the owner's manual for extra help. But all you really need are a good set of jumper cables. These car essentials are easy to store, so be sure to stash a set in your trunk for safe keeping!

How to Jump a Car

Now that you have your jumper cables, you'll also need to find a good Samaritan who will help you for a few minutes. Their vehicle must have a car battery with at least as much power as yours, but other than that, the type of car doesn't matter. After you've found a helper, follow these steps to master jumpstarting a car:

  • Turn off both engines and engage the parking brakes.
  • Take the red clips from your cables and attach them to the positive terminals of each battery.
  • Take the black clip and attach it to the negative terminal of your helper's car.
  • Take the other black clip and attach it to an unpainted metal surface on your car. We recommend the metal hood struts.
  • Ask your helper to run the engine for a few minutes.
  • Try to start your car. If it doesn't work, wait a few more minutes and try again.
  • Once your car is up and running, take a drive for at least 15 minutes to charge the battery.
