Cummins Diesel Cold-Weather Guide for the Ram 2500/3500

A Cummins turbo diesel starts and runs in a Chicago-area winter, but it does best when you follow a few cold-weather rules: when to plug in the block heater, how to start with the Wait To Start light, which fuel keeps it from gelling, and why long idling is a bad idea. All of the cold-weather guidance here is from the 2026 Ram 2500/3500 Owner's Manual.

The short answer

Block heater use is recommended below 0°F and required below -20°F; plug it in for at least an hour. Wait for the Wait To Start light to go out before cranking, never use starting fluid, and keep no-load warm-up below 1,000 RPM. Use climatized or Number 1 ultra-low-sulfur diesel in deep cold; if those are not available in sustained arctic cold below 20°F, add Mopar Premium Diesel Fuel Treatment to prevent gelling. Avoid long idling.

What the Cummins already does for cold weather

Glow plug system

Improves cold starting and reduces the white smoke a warming engine makes. The Wait To Start light stays on while it preheats.

Engine block heater

A resistance heater in the engine's water jacket, plugged into a 110-115 volt outlet. The cord is a factory option; cords are available from Mopar dealers.

Fuel filter heater

A 12-volt heater built into the fuel filter housings helps prevent fuel gelling. It is controlled by a built-in thermostat.

Warm-up idle

At low coolant temperatures, idle speed rises to 1,000 RPM and the variable geometry turbocharger engages to speed warm-up.

When to plug in the block heater

The block heater warms the engine and permits quicker starts. Connect it to a standard 110-115 volt AC outlet with a grounded, three-wire extension cord.

How to start a Cummins in the cold

When engine manifold air temperature is below 32°F, follow the normal starting steps with these differences, per the 2026 Ram 2500/3500 Owner's Manual:

  1. Apply the parking brake, shift to PARK and turn the ignition to ON/RUN.
  2. Wait for the Wait To Start light to go out. A bar in the cluster shrinks to show the time left; it varies with engine temperature.
  3. If the Water in Fuel light stays on, do not start the engine; drain the water from the fuel filters first.
  4. Crank without pressing the accelerator. Do not crank for more than 25 seconds at a time; if it does not start, turn the ignition off and wait at least two minutes before trying again.
  5. After it starts, check that the oil pressure warning light has gone out, release the parking brake and drive.

Never use starting fluid. The manual warns that ether or any flammable liquid in the air intake can cause a flash fire and explosion. The engine has an automatic electric air preheating system and should start in all conditions when the instructions are followed. With Keyless Enter 'n Go, pushing the start button once in PARK with your foot on the brake cranks the engine automatically after the Wait To Start time ends.

Winter diesel fuel and gelling

The Cummins requires ultra-low-sulfur diesel (ULSD) only. Below 32°F, fuel choice matters:

FuelWhen to use it
Number 2 ULSD (ASTM D-975 Grade S15)Good performance for most year-round service.
Climatized ULSDA blend of Number 2 and Number 1 ULSD that lowers the temperature at which wax crystals form. Expect a noticeable drop in fuel economy.
Number 1 ULSDOnly where extended arctic conditions (0°F) exist. Also lowers fuel economy.
Mopar Premium Diesel Fuel TreatmentIf climatized or Number 1 ULSD is not available and you are operating below 20°F in sustained arctic conditions, it (or an equivalent) is recommended to avoid gelling.

From the 2026 Ram 2500/3500 Owner's Manual (Fuel Operating Range; Fuel Selection), read October 26, 2026. The fuel grade should be marked on the pump. The manual adds that extra engine noise right after a cold start usually means the fuel is not blended for the temperature; the fuel treatment typically prevents it.

Warm-up and idling in the cold

Avoid full throttle with a cold engine and bring it up to operating speed slowly so oil pressure can stabilize. Keep no-load engine speed under 1,000 RPM while warming up; high-speed, no-load running of a cold engine can cause excessive white smoke and poor performance. Right after a cold start the engine may briefly limit speed to 1,000 RPM, for up to about two minutes in more severe cold.

Avoid prolonged idling. The manual explains that long idling can let combustion temperatures drop so low that fuel does not burn completely, which builds carbon and varnish and can dilute the oil. In extreme arctic cold, extended idling can also let condensation freeze in the crankcase ventilation system.

If you need the cab warm, the Idle-Up feature (using the cruise control buttons, in PARK with the parking brake applied and the engine running) raises idle to help warm the interior, and running the exhaust brake at idle greatly improves the warm-up rate. Even so, the manual says extended idle time should be avoided.

Grille cover and battery blanket

Winter front cover

Use a winter front or cold-weather cover below 32°F, especially for extended idling. Keep its four flaps fully open so air reaches the charge air cooler and transmission oil cooler, and close them once it drops below 0°F.

Battery blanket

A battery loses 60% of its cranking power at 0°F, while the engine needs twice as much power to crank. A 120-volt battery blanket greatly improves starting in the cold.

DEF in the cold

DEF may freeze at or below 12°F. The DEF heating system lets the system operate in the cold, but DEF in the tank of a truck parked for a long time can freeze, so do not overfill: an overfilled tank that freezes can be damaged.

Cummins cold-weather FAQ

When should I plug in my Cummins block heater?

The 2026 Ram 2500/3500 Owner's Manual recommends block heater use below 0 degrees F and requires it below -20 degrees F. Plug it in at least one hour before starting.

How long does the Wait To Start light stay on?

It varies with engine temperature. A bar in the instrument cluster shrinks to show the time left; crank after the light goes out.

Can I use starting fluid on a Cummins?

No. The manual warns that starting fluid (ether) or any flammable liquid in the air intake can cause a flash fire and explosion. The engine has an automatic air preheating system.

How do I keep diesel fuel from gelling?

Use climatized or Number 1 ultra-low-sulfur diesel in deep cold. If they are not available and you are below 20 degrees F in sustained arctic conditions, add Mopar Premium Diesel Fuel Treatment or an equivalent. The fuel filter housings also have a thermostat-controlled heater.

Should I idle my Cummins to warm it up?

Avoid prolonged idling. Bring the engine up to speed gently, keep no-load speed under 1,000 RPM while it warms, and drive. Long idling can lead to incomplete combustion and oil dilution.

Do I need a winter grille cover on a Ram 2500 or 3500?

The manual says a winter front cover is to be used below 32 degrees F, especially during extended idling, with its flaps open, and the flaps closed only below 0 degrees F. Covers are available from Mopar dealers.

Does Elgin CDJR service the Cummins diesel?

Yes. We service the Cummins 6.7-liter turbo diesel in the Ram 2500 and 3500, including DEF and emissions systems.
