Jeep Cherokee Remote Start: How to Use It
On a 2026 Jeep Cherokee equipped with Remote Start, two pushes of the key fob button start the vehicle from outside so the windows can defrost and the cabin can reach a comfortable temperature before you get in. Here is how to use it, how to drive away, why it may not start, and what the cluster messages mean, from the Cherokee owner's manual.

The short answer
Push and release the Remote Start button on the key fob twice within five seconds. The doors lock, the parking lights flash, the horn chirps twice (if programmed) and the engine starts, then runs for a 15-minute cycle. A third push shuts it off. To drive, unlock the doors, then with a valid key fob inside, press the brake and place the Start button in ON/RUN before the cycle ends.
How to remote start a Jeep Cherokee
Remote Start uses the key fob to start the engine conveniently from outside the vehicle while still maintaining security. The manual says it is used to defrost windows in cold weather and to reach a comfortable climate before the driver enters the vehicle.
- Push and release the Remote Start button on the key fob twice within five seconds.
- The doors lock, the parking lights flash, and the horn chirps twice (if programmed).
- The engine starts, and the vehicle stays in Remote Start mode for a 15-minute cycle.
- To shut it off from outside, push the Remote Start button a third time.
With Remote Start, the key fob operates at distances up to 328 feet (100 meters), and obstructions between the vehicle and the key fob may reduce that range. The parking lights stay on during Remote Climate Control mode, and the power windows and power sunroof (if equipped) are disabled for security.
From the 2026 Jeep Cherokee Owner's Manual (Key Fob; Remote Start, If Equipped), read November 3, 2026.
How to drive away, or shut Remote Start off
To drive after a remote start, push and release the unlock button on the key fob, or unlock the vehicle with Keyless Enter 'n Go Passive Entry at the door handles, and disarm the vehicle security system (if equipped). Then, before the 15-minute cycle ends, push and release the Start button. With a valid key fob in the vehicle, press the brake pedal and place the Start button in the ON/RUN position.
Once the Start button is in ON/RUN, the climate controls go back to their previous settings. On vehicles with Passive Entry, the cluster shows Remote Start Active, Push Start Button until you do.
The system turns the engine off if you push the Remote Start button again or if the engine runs for the whole 15-minute cycle. Remote Start can only be used twice; the Start button must be placed in ON/RUN before a third cycle. To avoid unintended shutdowns, the system disables itself for two seconds after a valid Remote Start request.
From the 2026 Jeep Cherokee Owner's Manual (How To Use Remote Start; To Exit Remote Start Mode), read November 3, 2026.
Why your Cherokee will not remote start
The manual lists conditions that must all be met before Remote Start will engage. If it will not start, check these:
Gear and power
Gear selector in PARK, and the vehicle in the OFF position.
Doors, hood and liftgate
All doors, the hood and the liftgate closed.
Switches and pedal
Hazard switch off, brake pedal not pressed, and the key fob Panic button not pushed.
Battery and fuel
Battery at an acceptable charge level. If an engine fault is present or the fuel level is low, the vehicle will start and then shut down in 10 seconds.
Check engine light
The check engine light (Malfunction Indicator Light) must not be on.
Security and repeats
The Vehicle Security system indicator flashing, and the system not disabled from a previous Remote Start event. After two cycles, the Start button must be placed in ON/RUN before Remote Start works again.
From the 2026 Jeep Cherokee Owner's Manual (Remote Start conditions and notes), read November 3, 2026.
What Remote Start turns on in cold and warm weather
On Cherokees equipped with these features, Remote Start sets the cabin up automatically:
Front defrost
When the outside temperature is 40°F (4.5°C) or below, front defrost runs for 15 minutes or less, depending on the temperature.
Front and rear defrost
Front and rear defrost turn on automatically in cold weather.
Heated wheel and seat
The heated steering wheel and driver heated seat turn on if selected in the Comfort menu in Uconnect Settings.
Vented seat
In warm weather, the driver vented seat turns on if programmed in the Comfort menu.
Automatic climate
Automatic Temperature Control adjusts temperature and mode to the outside temperature until the Start button is placed in ON/RUN.
Wiper De-Icer
Below 33°F (0.6°C), the Windshield Wiper De-Icer activates.
From the 2026 Jeep Cherokee Owner's Manual (Remote Start Front Defrost Activation; Remote Start Comfort Systems; Remote Start Windshield Wiper De-Icer Activation), read November 3, 2026. Changing the climate controls by hand during Remote Start, including the OFF button, takes the system out of automatic mode.
Jeep Cherokee Remote Start cancel messages
If the vehicle fails to remote start or leaves Remote Start early, one of these messages shows in the instrument cluster display until the Start button is placed in ON/RUN:
| Message | What to check |
|---|---|
| Remote Start Canceled — Door Open | Close every door and try again. |
| Remote Start Canceled — Hood Open | Close the hood. |
| Remote Start Canceled — Fuel Low | Add fuel. |
| Remote Start Canceled — Trunk Open | Close the liftgate. |
| Remote Start Disabled — Start Vehicle To Reset | Place the Start button in ON/RUN to reset the system. |
Messages are from the 2026 Jeep Cherokee Owner's Manual (Remote Start Cancel Message, If Equipped), read November 3, 2026. The "what to check" column restates each message.
Remote Start safety
The manual warns not to start or run an engine in a closed garage or confined area, because exhaust contains carbon monoxide, which is odorless, colorless and poisonous. It also says to keep key fobs away from children, since operating Remote Start, the windows, door locks or other controls could cause serious injury or death.
Thinking about an add-on remote starter? The manual cautions that the Sentry Key Immobilizer system is not compatible with some aftermarket Remote Start systems, which may cause starting problems and loss of security protection.
From the 2026 Jeep Cherokee Owner's Manual (Remote Start warnings; Sentry Key caution), read November 3, 2026.
