Jeep Cherokee Tire Pressure and TPMS Light Guide
The right tire pressure for your 2026 Cherokee is on a label on the driver's side of the vehicle, and the Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) warns you when a road tire falls too low. Because tire pressure drops as the temperature falls, a cold morning can bring the light on. Here is how to read the label, how to make the light go off, and what each warning means, from the 2026 Jeep Cherokee Owner's Manual.

The short answer
Use the cold tire inflation pressure on the label on the driver's side B-pillar or the rear edge of the driver's door, not the number on the tire sidewall (that is the maximum). Check the tires cold with a good gauge and inflate any low tire to the label pressure. The TPMS light turns off on its own once the system receives the new pressures; the vehicle may need to be driven up to 20 minutes above 15 mph.
Where to find the right tire pressure for your Cherokee
The proper cold tire inflation pressure is listed on the driver's side B-pillar or the rear edge of the driver's side door. That label, the tire placard, lists the vehicle's loading capacity, the original equipment tire sizes and the recommended cold tire inflation pressures.
The maximum inflation pressure molded into the tire sidewall is not the pressure to run. The cold pressure you set must not exceed it.

Check tire pressure cold, and why winter drops it
The placard pressure is always a cold pressure: the reading after the vehicle has not been driven for at least three hours, or has been driven less than 1 mile after sitting for at least three hours. Tire pressure may rise 2 to 6 psi while you drive. Do not let air out to bring that back down, or the tires will be too low.
Tire pressure changes about 1 psi for every 12°F of air temperature change. The manual's winter example: if your garage is 68°F and it is 32°F outside, increase the cold tire inflation pressure by 3 psi when you set the tires in the garage.
- At least once a month, check and adjust pressure with a good quality pocket-type gauge, including the spare if equipped.
- Do not judge by eye. Tires may look properly inflated even when they are underinflated.
- At the same time, inspect the tires for signs of wear or visible damage.
- Check more often when outdoor temperatures swing widely.
- Always reinstall the valve stem cap to keep moisture and dirt out of the valve stem.

How to turn off the Cherokee tire pressure light
The TPMS warns you when a tire falls below the low-pressure warning threshold for any reason, including low temperature and natural pressure loss through the tire. The warning stays on until the tire is at or above the recommended cold tire pressure. To turn it off:
- Stop as soon as possible. The cluster shows an "Inflate to XX" message and a graphic of each tire's pressure, with the low tires in a different color.
- Inflate each low tire to the recommended cold tire pressure shown in the "Inflate to XX" message. If the tires are warm from driving, you may need to add up to 4 psi more than the cold placard pressure to turn the light off.
- Once the system receives the new pressures, the graphic returns to its original color and the light turns off. The vehicle may need to be driven for up to 20 minutes above 15 mph for the TPMS to receive them.
The manual's example of why the light can stay on: with a 33 psi recommended cold pressure, a tire measured at 28 psi at 68°F drops to about 24 psi at 20°F, low enough to turn the light on. Driving may warm it back to about 28 psi, but the light stays on until the tires are inflated to the recommended cold pressure.

Cherokee TPMS warnings and what they mean
| What you see | What it means | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| TPMS light on, chime, "Inflate to XX" and a low tire in a different color | One or more of the four active road tires is low. | Stop as soon as possible and inflate the low tires to the recommended cold tire pressure. |
| TPMS light flashes for 75 seconds, then stays on; chime; "SERVICE TPM SYSTEM" and dashes (--) in place of a pressure | A system fault: one or more sensors is not being received. | Causes listed in the manual: jamming from electronic devices or facilities using the same radio frequencies, lots of snow or ice around the wheels or wheel housings, tire chains, or wheels and tires without TPMS sensors. The sequence repeats each time the power button is cycled while the fault exists; once it clears, pressure values return. |
| Light stays on after you put the spare on, then SERVICE TPM SYSTEM and dashes | There is no TPMS sensor in the spare tire, so it is not monitored. If the spare replaces a low tire, the light and "Inflate to XX" stay on at first; after up to 20 minutes above 15 mph the light flashes for 75 seconds and SERVICE TPM SYSTEM and dashes appear. | Repair or replace the original road tire and reinstall it in place of the spare. The TPMS updates automatically, which may take up to 20 minutes above 15 mph. |

Tire Fill Alert: let the Cherokee tell you when to stop
Tire Fill Alert tells you when the placard tire pressure is reached while you inflate or deflate a tire. You can enable or disable it in the apps menu of the Uconnect system.
- Put the power button in ON/RUN with the drive selector in PARK. The electric motor does not have to be on.
- Start filling one tire. The hazard lights come on to confirm Tire Fill Alert mode, and the tire pressure screen appears in the cluster. If the hazard lights do not come on, the vehicle may need to be moved slightly forward or backward.
- The horn chirps once when the tire reaches the recommended pressure. Three chirps mean the tire is overfilled, and the horn keeps chirping every five seconds if you keep filling; let air out until it chirps once again.
- Fill one tire at a time. Wait until the hazard lights stop flashing, or 26 to 30 seconds after one tire reaches pressure, before moving to the next.
Tire Fill Alert cannot be entered while a TPMS fault is active or the system is in deactivation mode (if equipped). If equipped, Selectable Tire Fill Alert in the Uconnect apps menu lets you choose a front and rear pressure from 15 psi up to the placard pressure.

Keep the TPMS working
Original-size wheels and tires
TPMS pressures and warnings were set for the tire size on your vehicle. Replacement equipment of a different size, type or style can cause poor operation or sensor damage, and the sensor is not designed for aftermarket wheels. The manual encourages OEM wheels.
Careful with tire sealant
Aftermarket tire sealants may make a TPMS sensor inoperable. After using one, the manual recommends having an authorized dealer check the sensor.
Winter wheels without sensors
If equipped with TPMS deactivation, the system can be turned off when all four road wheels are replaced with wheels that have no sensors, such as winter wheels, by driving 20 minutes above 15 mph. Putting sensor-equipped wheels back on and driving up to 20 minutes above 15 mph reactivates it.
Not a gauge
The TPMS does not replace normal tire care or warn of a tire failure, and it should not be used as a gauge while adjusting pressure. It is the driver's job to keep the correct pressure with an accurate gauge, even before the light comes on.

Jeep Cherokee tire pressure FAQ
What should my Jeep Cherokee tire pressure be?
Use the cold tire inflation pressure on the label on the driver's side B-pillar or the rear edge of the driver's door. The right number depends on your vehicle and tires, so check your own label rather than a general number.
How do I reset the tire pressure light on a Cherokee?
Inflate the low tires to the recommended cold tire pressure. The light goes off once the system receives the new pressures, which may take up to 20 minutes of driving above 15 mph.
Why is my Cherokee tire pressure light on when it gets cold?
Tire pressure drops about 1 psi for every 12°F of temperature drop, so a cold night can take a tire below the warning threshold. Inflate to the recommended cold pressure.
What does SERVICE TPM SYSTEM mean?
The TPMS light flashes for 75 seconds and stays on, and SERVICE TPM SYSTEM appears, when the system detects a fault, such as a sensor signal that is not being received. Snow or ice around the wheels, tire chains, radio interference or wheels without sensors are among the causes listed in the manual.
Does the Cherokee spare tire have a TPMS sensor?
No. The manual says there is no TPMS sensor in the spare tire, so the system cannot monitor its pressure.
Do I need to let air out after driving?
No. Pressure may rise 2 to 6 psi as the tires warm up. Letting air out leaves the tires too low.
TPMS light that will not go off?
Schedule a visit at Elgin CDJR in Streamwood for a tire check.
