Jeep Cherokee Warning Lights Guide
The 2026 Jeep Cherokee has a high voltage battery and electric drive, so its cluster can show high voltage battery and electric drive warnings alongside the familiar brake, oil and check engine lights. Here is what the red and yellow lights and the most urgent messages mean, and what the owner's manual says to do for each.

The short answer
Red lights and red messages are the urgent ones. Stop as soon as it is safe for the oil pressure light, an overheating engine or the Stop Safely message, have the vehicle checked immediately for a red brake light that stays on, and stop and get everyone out for the Fire Danger message. A flashing check engine light means immediate service; a steady one means have it checked. The manual says these indications are not exhaustive, so always check the manual for any light you see.
Cherokee warnings that mean stop
These high priority messages and lights appear in the cluster. The manual says:
Fire Danger! Pull Over Now! Exit Vehicle!
Shown if the system detects the high voltage battery has overheated, which can result in a fire and the release of toxic or flammable gases. The high voltage propulsion system turns off within 30 seconds; you can still steer and brake. Stop in an open area, get everyone out and away from the vehicle, then call emergency responders. Do not re-enter or restart it.
Stop Safely Vehicle Will Shut Off Soon
The vehicle has found an operational issue that will soon turn the propulsion system off. Stop in a safe location as soon as possible and have the vehicle transported to an authorized dealer.
Oil pressure
Low engine oil pressure. Stop the vehicle, shut off the engine as soon as possible and contact an authorized dealer. Do not drive until the cause is corrected. The light does not show how much oil is in the engine.
Engine coolant temperature
The engine is overheating. Safely pull over and stop. If the A/C is on, turn it off, shift into NEUTRAL and idle. If the temperature does not return to normal, turn the engine off and call for service.
Brake (red)
Can mean the parking brake is applied, the brake fluid is low, or a problem with the Anti-Lock Brake System reservoir. If it stays on with the parking brake released and the fluid full, there may be a brake hydraulic or brake booster problem. The manual warns that driving with the red brake light on is dangerous and to have the vehicle checked immediately.
Drive-by-Brake message
With certain electric drive issues, the Cherokee may use a Drive-by-Brake mode: releasing the brake lets the vehicle slowly accelerate up to a maximum speed, and pressing it slows the vehicle. The manual says you can drive this way until the vehicle is brought to the dealer.

| Battery charge | The battery is not charging properly. If it stays on while the engine is running, there may be a charging system malfunction; contact an authorized dealer as soon as possible. |
| Electric power steering (EPS) fault | A fault with the EPS system. The manual warns that continued driving with reduced assist could be a safety risk; get service as soon as possible. |
| Service electrical system (if equipped) | Service to the electrical system is needed. If it stays on or keeps coming on, contact an authorized dealer as soon as possible. |
| High voltage coolant low | High voltage battery coolant is low. Contact an authorized dealer if it stays on. |
| Traction battery failure | A failure in the traction battery system. Contact an authorized dealer if it stays on. |
| Oil temperature | Engine oil temperature is high. Stop and shut off the engine as soon as possible, and wait for the oil temperature to return to normal. |
| Transmission temperature | High transmission fluid temperature, for example from trailer towing. Stop and idle in PARK or NEUTRAL until the light goes off. Driving on with it lit can cause a fire or severe transmission damage. |
| Door, hood or liftgate open | Something is not fully closed. A chime also sounds if the vehicle is moving. |
| Seat belt reminder | The driver or front passenger seat belt is unbuckled. |

| Electronic Stability Control (ESC) | Comes on when ESC is active (during an ESC event). If it comes on continuously with the motor running after several key cycles and several miles above 30 mph, see an authorized dealer as soon as possible. |
| ESC OFF | ESC is off. It turns back on each time the power button is placed in ON/RUN. |
| Electric Park Brake | The Electric Park Brake is not working properly and needs service. |
| Low fuel | About 2 gallons (7.5 L) of fuel left. The light stays on until fuel is added. |
| Low Gear fault | Low Gear is temporarily unavailable or a system fault was found. A message is displayed. |
| Low washer fluid | Windshield washer fluid is low. |
| Service 4WD (if equipped) | The 4WD system is not working properly. The manual recommends driving to the nearest authorized dealer for service immediately. |
| Traction Battery Cut-Off (if equipped) | The traction battery system is not working properly. Contact an authorized dealer if it stays on. |
| Driver assistance service lights | Service Adaptive Cruise Control, Service Active Lane Management and Service Forward Collision Warning or Pedestrian Emergency Braking mean that system needs service. |

Cherokee check engine light: steady or flashing
The check engine light, or Malfunction Indicator Light (MIL), is part of the OBD II system that monitors engine and transmission controls. It comes on as a bulb check when the Start button is placed in ON/RUN before engine start.
A steady light after starting can come from conditions such as a loose or missing gas cap or poor quality fuel. The manual says to have the vehicle serviced if the light stays on through several typical driving styles, and that in most situations the vehicle will drive normally without a tow.
A flashing light is more serious: it can mean conditions that could lead to an immediate loss of power or severe catalytic converter damage. Have the vehicle serviced as soon as possible. The manual warns that an overheated catalytic converter can start a fire if you drive slowly or park over dry plants, wood or cardboard. The manual also lists the check engine light as one of the conditions that keeps Remote Start from engaging.

Cherokee tire pressure light: steady or flashing
A steady TPMS light with a message means one or more tires is lower than the recommended pressure or is slowly losing pressure. Stop and check your tires as soon as possible and inflate them to the pressure on the vehicle placard or tire inflation pressure label. The manual says not to keep driving on one or more flat tires.
If the light flashes for about a minute and then stays on, the system has a malfunction and may not detect low pressure. Replacement tires or wheels, aftermarket wheels and aftermarket tire sealants can affect the sensors. Our Jeep tire service page covers tire checks.

Cherokee indicator lights
Green, white, blue and some yellow lights are indicators that a feature is on, not warnings. A few examples from the manual:
Green
Auto HOLD, Adaptive Cruise Control set, front fog lights, parking or headlights on, and turn signals. A chime sounds if you drive more than 1 mile with a turn signal on; a fast flash can mean an outside bulb is out.
White
Adaptive Cruise Control ready, the drive mode (Auto, Snow or Sport), Low Gear engaged, and the Run light, which shows the vehicle is in PARK or NEUTRAL with the engine running.
Blue
High beams on.
Yellow indicators
Auto HOLD! fault, Forward Collision Warning or Pedestrian Emergency Braking off, rear fog lights and Trailer Detection on.

Jeep Cherokee warning lights FAQ
Which Cherokee warning lights mean stop driving?
The Fire Danger and Stop Safely messages, the oil pressure light and the engine coolant temperature light are the most urgent, and a red brake light that stays on means have the vehicle checked immediately. Follow the manual's steps for each and contact an authorized dealer.
What does a flashing check engine light mean on a Cherokee?
The manual says a flashing check engine light can mean conditions that could lead to an immediate loss of power or severe catalytic converter damage. Have the vehicle serviced as soon as possible.
Is it safe to drive with the check engine light on?
If it is steady, the manual says that in most situations the vehicle will drive normally and will not need a tow, but it should be serviced if the light stays on through several typical driving styles. A loose or missing gas cap is one possible cause.
What does the Fire Danger message mean?
The system has detected that the high voltage battery has overheated. Stop in an open area, get everyone out and away from the vehicle, and call emergency responders. Do not re-enter or restart it.
What is Drive-by-Brake mode?
With certain electric drive issues, the Cherokee can keep moving with speed controlled by the brake pedal only. Releasing the brake lets it slowly accelerate to a maximum speed. The manual says you can drive this way until the vehicle is brought to the dealer for service.
When does the Cherokee low fuel light come on?
When about 2 gallons (7.5 L) of fuel is left. A chime sounds, and the light stays on until fuel is added.
Why is my Cherokee tire pressure light flashing?
A light that flashes for about a minute and then stays on means the TPMS has a malfunction and may not be able to detect or signal low tire pressure as intended.
