Jeep Compass Oil Type and Capacity
The 2026 Jeep Compass has one engine, the 2.0L, and the 2026 Jeep Compass Owner's Manual calls for one oil. Here is the oil grade, the Mopar material standard, the API rating, the capacity with filter, how to check the level, how often to change it and how to reset the oil change message.

The short answer
The 2026 Compass manual recommends Mopar API SP/GF-6A Certified SAE 5W-30 Full Synthetic Engine Oil meeting Material Standard MS-13340. Equivalent full synthetic 5W-30 API SP oil can be used but must have the API trademark the manual lists. Capacity for the 2.0L engine is 5 quarts (4.7 L) with the filter. Change the oil and filter when the oil change message appears, within 500 miles, and never go past 10,000 miles, one year or 350 hours of engine run time.
2026 Jeep Compass oil type and capacity
| Engine | Recommended oil | Capacity with filter |
|---|---|---|
| 2.0L | Mopar API SP/GF-6A Certified SAE 5W-30 Full Synthetic Engine Oil meeting Material Standard MS-13340. Equivalent full synthetic 5W-30 API SP engine oil can be used but must have the API Donut trademark (as the manual's specification table states). | 5 qt (4.7 L) |
From the 2026 Jeep Compass Owner's Manual (Technical Specifications: Engine Fluids And Lubricants; Fluid Capacities), read October 27, 2026. Other model years can differ; check the manual for your year.
The manual says the oil installed at the factory is a high-quality energy conserving lubricant, and that oil changes should be consistent with the climate conditions you expect to drive in. Failure to use the recommended API SP/GF-6A or equivalent oil can cause engine damage not covered by the vehicle warranty.
What the API symbols on the bottle mean
The manual says the manufacturer only recommends API trademark oils, meaning oils certified by the American Petroleum Institute. Its maintenance section says the API Starburst trademark certifies 0W-20, 0W-30 and 5W-30 engine oils, and the API Donut trademark certifies 0W-40 and 5W-40 engine oil. Its specification table, quoted above, says an equivalent 5W-30 for the Compass must have the API Donut trademark.
Your engine was designed for synthetic engine oils, so use only synthetic, API approved engine oils. Synthetic oils that do not have both the correct API trademark and the correct SAE viscosity grade numbers should not be used. If you are unsure whether a bottle qualifies, Mopar 5W-30 meeting MS-13340 is the oil the manual names.

How to check the oil level on a Compass
Check the oil level at regular intervals, such as every fuel stop. The best time is about five minutes after a fully warmed up engine is shut off, and checking on level ground improves the accuracy of the reading.
- Park on level ground and shut off the fully warmed up engine.
- Wait about five minutes.
- Read the level on the dipstick. The manual lists four dipstick types: a crosshatched zone; a crosshatched zone marked SAFE; a crosshatched zone with MIN at the low end and MAX at the high end; or a crosshatched zone with dimples at the MIN and MAX ends.
- Always keep the oil level within the crosshatch markings. Adding 1 qt (1 L) when the reading is at the low end of the range raises it to the high end.
The manual cautions that overfilling or underfilling the crankcase will cause aeration or loss of oil pressure, which could damage the engine. It also notes that a new engine may consume some oil during its first few thousand miles, which is a normal part of break-in.

How often to change Compass oil
Your Compass has an automatic oil change indicator system. When the "Change Oil" or "Oil Change Required" message appears, have the vehicle serviced as soon as possible, within the next 500 miles (805 km). Frequent short trips, trailer towing and extremely hot or cold temperatures affect when the message comes on. The system is duty cycle based, so the interval can change with your driving style.
Under no circumstances should oil change intervals exceed 10,000 miles (16,000 km), one year or 350 hours of engine run time, whichever comes first. The manual notes the 350-hour limit is generally only a concern for fleet customers. Separately, check the engine oil level once a month or before a long trip.
Replace the engine oil filter with a new one at every oil change, using a full-flow disposable filter. The manual says only high quality Mopar certified filters should be used, prefers bproauto filters as an alternative, and otherwise says to use only filters that meet or exceed SAE/USCAR-36 filter performance requirements.

How to reset the oil change message
An authorized dealer resets the oil change message after doing the scheduled oil change. If someone else changes the oil, the manual gives these steps:
- Without pressing the brake pedal, push the ENGINE START/STOP button and cycle the ignition to the ON/RUN position (do not start the engine).
- Fully press the accelerator pedal, slowly, three times within ten seconds.
- Cycle the ignition to the OFF position.
If the message comes on when you start the vehicle, the system did not reset; repeat the procedure if necessary.

What the manual says to avoid
Non-detergent oil
Never use non-detergent oil or straight mineral oil in the engine, or damage may result.
Chemical flushes
Do not use chemical flushes in your engine oil; the chemicals can damage the engine, and that damage is not covered by the New Vehicle Limited Warranty.
Additives
The manufacturer strongly recommends against adding any additives (other than leak detection dyes) to the engine oil, because its performance may be impaired by supplemental additives.
Wrong rating
Failure to use the recommended API SP/GF-6A or equivalent oil can cause engine damage not covered by the vehicle warranty. Synthetic oils without both the correct API trademark and the correct SAE viscosity grade should not be used.
