Jeep Compass Transmission Fluid Guide
Looking for the transmission dipstick on a 2026 Jeep Compass? There isn't one. The 2026 Jeep Compass Owner's Manual says the fluid level is preset at the factory and routine fluid level checks are not required. Here is which fluid that manual calls for, how the level gets checked, and when the fluid does get changed.

The short answer
The 2026 Jeep Compass Owner's Manual says to use only Mopar ZF 8 & 9 Speed ATF Automatic Transmission Fluid, or equivalent, in the automatic transmission. There is no dipstick: the fluid level is preset at the factory, and an authorized dealer can check it with special service tools. Under normal operating conditions the factory fluid will provide satisfactory lubrication for the life of the vehicle, so routine fluid and filter changes are not required; the manual says to change them if the fluid becomes contaminated (with water, for example) or if the transmission is disassembled for any reason.
What transmission fluid does a Jeep Compass use?
The Chassis Fluids And Lubricants chart in the 2026 Jeep Compass Owner's Manual says to use only Mopar ZF 8 & 9 Speed ATF Automatic Transmission Fluid, or equivalent, in the automatic transmission. It adds that failure to use the correct fluid may affect the function or performance of your transmission.
The maintenance section explains why: it is important to use the proper transmission fluid to ensure optimum transmission performance and life, and to maintain the fluid at the correct level using the recommended fluid. Using a transmission fluid other than the manufacturer recommended fluid may cause deterioration in transmission shift quality and/or torque converter shudder.
From the 2026 Jeep Compass Owner's Manual (publication 102916_26_MP, edition E1; Automatic Transmission, page 207; Chassis Fluids And Lubricants, page 244), read November 4, 2026.
Why there is no transmission dipstick
The 2026 manual says the fluid level is preset at the factory and does not require adjustment under normal operating conditions. Routine fluid level checks are not required, therefore the transmission has no dipstick. An authorized dealer can check your transmission fluid level using special service tools.
If you notice fluid leakage or a transmission malfunction, the manual says to visit an authorized dealer immediately to have the transmission fluid level checked. Operating the vehicle with an improper fluid level can cause severe transmission damage, and an authorized dealer has the proper tools to adjust the fluid level accurately.
From the 2026 Jeep Compass Owner's Manual (Fluid Level Check, page 207), read November 4, 2026.
When is Compass transmission fluid changed?
Under normal operating conditions, the 2026 manual says the fluid installed at the factory will provide satisfactory lubrication for the life of the vehicle, and routine fluid and filter changes are not required. It says to change the fluid and filter if the fluid becomes contaminated (with water, etc.), or if the transmission is disassembled for any reason.
The Maintenance Plan tables in the same manual run from 20,000 to 150,000 miles and have no automatic transmission fluid line. The manual also notes that more frequent maintenance may be needed in severe conditions, such as dusty areas and very short trip driving. If you tow, drive off-road or see a leak, ask our service advisors about your Compass.

What not to put in the transmission
The 2026 manual lists three things to avoid:
- No special additives. The manual strongly recommends against using any special additives in the transmission. Automatic Transmission Fluid (ATF) is an engineered product and its performance may be impaired by supplemental additives. The only exception it gives is special dyes for diagnosing fluid leaks in 8-speed transmissions.
- No sealers. Avoid using transmission sealers, as they may adversely affect seals.
- No chemical flushes. Do not use chemical flushes in your transmission, as the chemicals can damage transmission components. The manual says such damage is not covered by the New Vehicle Limited Warranty, and that only the approved lubricant should be used.
From the 2026 Jeep Compass Owner's Manual (Special Additives; Selection Of Lubricant, pages 206 and 207), read November 4, 2026.
Transmission warning lights
Transmission Temperature Warning Light
Warns of a high transmission fluid temperature, which may occur with strenuous usage such as trailer towing. If it turns on, the manual says to stop the vehicle and run the engine at idle or slightly faster, with the transmission in PARK or NEUTRAL, until the light turns off, then continue normally. Continuous driving with the light on will eventually cause severe transmission damage or failure, and the fluid could boil over, contact hot engine or exhaust components and cause a fire.
Transmission Fault Warning Light
Illuminates together with a message in the instrument cluster display and a buzzer to indicate a transmission fault. The manual says to contact an authorized dealer if the message remains after restarting the engine.
From the 2026 Jeep Compass Owner's Manual (transmission warning lights, page 92), read November 4, 2026.
Limp Home Mode, resetting the transmission and the torque converter clutch
The manual says transmission function is monitored electronically. If a condition is detected that could result in transmission damage, Transmission Limp Home Mode is activated: the transmission may operate only in a fixed gear or remain in NEUTRAL, and the Malfunction Indicator Light may be illuminated. Limp Home Mode may allow the vehicle to be driven to an authorized dealer without damaging the transmission.
For a momentary problem, the manual gives a reset: stop the vehicle, shift into PARK if possible (otherwise NEUTRAL), push and hold the ignition until the engine turns off, wait about 30 seconds, restart and shift into the desired gear. Even if the reset works, it recommends visiting an authorized dealer at your earliest convenience.
The manual also notes that the torque converter clutch will not engage until the engine and/or transmission is warm, usually after 1 to 3 miles of driving, so it may seem as if the transmission is not shifting properly when the vehicle is cold. It calls this normal.
From the 2026 Jeep Compass Owner's Manual (Transmission Limp Home Mode; Torque Converter Clutch, pages 120 and 121), read November 4, 2026.
4x4 models: PTU and rear differential fluids
The 2026 Compass four-wheel-drive system, Jeep Active Drive, uses a Power Transfer Unit (PTU). The fluid chart lists separate lubricants for it and the rear differential, if equipped:
| Component | What the 2026 manual recommends |
|---|---|
| Power Transfer Unit (PTU), if equipped | Mopar Front Axle/PTU Synthetic Axle Lubricant SAE 75W-90 (API GL-5). |
| Rear Differential (RDM), if equipped | Mopar Rear Axle/RDM Synthetic Axle Lubricant SAE 75W-90 (API GL-5). |
| Tires | All wheels must have the same size and type tires. The manual warns that unequal tire sizes may cause failure of the Power Transfer Unit. |

Jeep Compass transmission fluid FAQ
What transmission fluid does a 2026 Jeep Compass take?
Mopar ZF 8 & 9 Speed ATF Automatic Transmission Fluid, or equivalent, per the 2026 Jeep Compass owner's manual.
Where is the transmission dipstick on a Jeep Compass?
On the 2026 Compass there is none. The manual says the fluid level is preset at the factory and routine checks are not required, so the transmission has no dipstick. An authorized dealer checks the level with special service tools.
How often should Jeep Compass transmission fluid be changed?
The 2026 manual says routine fluid and filter changes are not required: under normal operating conditions the factory fluid will last the life of the vehicle. Change it if the fluid becomes contaminated, for example with water, or if the transmission is disassembled.
Can I add a transmission additive or flush?
The manual strongly recommends against special additives (except dyes for diagnosing leaks in 8-speed transmissions), says to avoid sealers, and says not to use chemical flushes, which can damage the transmission; such damage is not covered by the New Vehicle Limited Warranty.
Why does my Compass shift oddly when it is cold?
The manual says the torque converter clutch will not engage until the engine and/or transmission is warm, usually after 1 to 3 miles, so it may seem as if the transmission is not shifting properly when cold. This is normal.
What are the service department hours?
