Jeep Grand Cherokee Coolant Guide
The 2026 Jeep Grand Cherokee Owner's Manual (Grand Cherokee and Grand Cherokee 4xe) recommends OAT coolant (antifreeze) that meets the manufacturer Material Standard MS.90032 for every cooling system its fluids chart lists, on both the 2.0L Hurricane-4 gas engine and the 2.0L hybrid. Here is what that manual says about the coolant to use, how much each system holds, how to check the level, when it gets replaced and what not to mix in.

The short answer
The 2026 Jeep Grand Cherokee Owner's Manual recommends Mopar Antifreeze/Coolant 10 year/150,000 mile Formula OAT (Organic Additive Technology) meeting Material Standard MS.90032 for the engine coolant, and the same OAT coolant for the intercooler and, on the 4xe hybrid, the power electronics and battery coolant. It says this coolant can be used up to 10 years or 150,000 miles before replacement, and that you should use the same coolant throughout the life of the vehicle. For engine coolant, mix a minimum of 50% OAT coolant with distilled water, do not mix in HOAT or "globally compatible" coolant, and never open the cooling system when it is hot.
What coolant does a Jeep Grand Cherokee use?
The 2026 manual's fluids charts list OAT coolant for each Grand Cherokee cooling system, in a gasoline chart and a hybrid chart.
| System | Coolant the 2026 manual recommends |
|---|---|
| Engine coolant (2.0L Hurricane-4 gas) | We recommend using Mopar Antifreeze/Coolant 10 year/150,000 mile (240,000 km) Formula OAT (Organic Additive Technology) meeting the requirements of the manufacturer Material Standard MS.90032. |
| Intercooler (2.0L Hurricane-4 gas) | We recommend using Mopar Antifreeze/Coolant 10 year/150,000 mile (240,000 km) Formula OAT (Organic Additive Technology) or equivalent meeting the requirements of the manufacturer Material Standard MS.90032. |
| Engine, intercooler, power electric and battery coolant (2.0L hybrid, 4xe) | We recommend using Mopar Antifreeze/Coolant 10 year/150,000 mile (240,000 km) Formula OAT (Organic Additive Technology) meeting the requirements of the manufacturer Material Standard MS.90032. |
From the 2026 Jeep Grand Cherokee Owner's Manual (Fluids And Lubricants, pages 388 and 389), read October 28, 2026. Other model years and versions can differ; check your own manual.
The manual cautions that OAT engine coolant is different from Hybrid Organic Additive Technology (HOAT) coolant and should not be mixed with HOAT or any "globally compatible" coolant. It also says not to use water alone or alcohol-based engine coolant products, not to use additional rust inhibitors or antirust products, which may plug the radiator, and that the vehicle has not been designed for propylene glycol-based engine coolant.

How to check Grand Cherokee coolant level
The 2026 manual says the coolant bottle gives a quick visual check. With the engine off and cold, the level of the engine coolant in the bottle should be between the ranges indicated on the bottle. As long as the engine operating temperature is satisfactory, the coolant bottle need only be checked once a month. The radiator normally remains completely full, so there is no need to remove the radiator/coolant pressure cap unless checking the engine coolant freeze point or replacing coolant.
The manual's 2.0L section describes a coolant bottle cap with a level dipstick. With the engine OFF and cold, its steps are: remove the cap with the level dipstick from the engine coolant bottle; clean the coolant off the dipstick; rest the cap on the opening of the bottle without tightening it; then remove the cap and check the level on the dipstick. It should be within the OK range between ADD and FULL.
When additional engine coolant is needed to keep the proper level, the manual says only OAT coolant meeting MS.90032 should be added to the coolant bottle, and not to overfill it. Never add engine coolant when the engine is overheated, and do not loosen or remove the pressure cap while the system is hot or under pressure. If frequent engine coolant additions are required, the manual says the cooling system should be pressure tested for leaks.
From the 2026 Jeep Grand Cherokee Owner's Manual (Coolant Level; Engine Coolant Level — 2.0L; Cooling System Notes, page 317), read October 28, 2026.
Mixing and adding Grand Cherokee coolant
The 2026 manual's rules for adding engine coolant:
- Mix ratio. Mix a minimum solution of 50% OAT engine coolant meeting MS.90032 and distilled water. Use higher concentrations, not to exceed 70%, if temperatures below −34°F (−37°C) are anticipated, and contact an authorized dealer for assistance.
- Water. Use only high purity water, such as distilled or deionized water. Lower quality water reduces corrosion protection in the engine cooling system.
- Do not mix coolant types. Mixing engine coolant types is not recommended and can result in cooling system damage. If HOAT and OAT coolant are mixed in an emergency, have an authorized dealer drain, flush and refill with OAT coolant as soon as possible.
- Same coolant for life. To keep the extended maintenance period, use the same OAT coolant throughout the life of the vehicle.
- Special tools. Some vehicles require special tools to add coolant properly, and failing to fill those systems properly could lead to severe internal engine damage. The manual says to contact an authorized dealer if any coolant needs to be added to the system.
It also reminds owners that keeping the proper level of protection against freezing for local temperatures is the owner's responsibility, which matters for Chicago-area winters, and that the coolant expansion bottle contents must also be protected against freezing.
From the 2026 Jeep Grand Cherokee Owner's Manual (Selection Of Coolant; Adding Coolant, page 316; Cooling System Notes, page 317), read October 28, 2026.
When to replace Grand Cherokee coolant
| Item | What the 2026 manual says |
|---|---|
| Coolant life | The factory OAT coolant can be used up to 10 years or 150,000 miles (240,000 km) before replacement. |
| Maintenance Plan, 2.0L Hurricane-4 | Flush and replace the engine coolant at 10 years or 150,000 miles (240,000 km), whichever comes first. |
| Maintenance Plan, 2.0L hybrid (4xe) | Flush and replace the engine, power electronics and battery coolant at 10 years or 150,000 miles (240,000 km), whichever comes first. |
| Every 12 months | Check the engine coolant (antifreeze) protection before the onset of freezing weather, where applicable. If the engine coolant is dirty, the system should be drained, flushed and refilled with fresh OAT coolant by an authorized dealer. |
| At every oil change interval | Inspect engine cooling system protection and hoses. |
| Once a month or before a long trip | Check the fluid level of the coolant reservoir and fill as needed. |
From the 2026 Jeep Grand Cherokee Owner's Manual (Adding Coolant, page 316; Engine Coolant Checks, page 315; Scheduled Servicing, page 296; Maintenance Plans, pages 297, 299, 301 and 303), read October 28, 2026. The Maintenance Plans run by mileage or time, whichever comes first.
Grand Cherokee 4xe battery and power electronics coolant
The 2026 manual's capacity chart marks both the 2.0L hybrid intercooler/power electronics coolant and the battery coolant "Contact an authorized dealer for service." Its hybrid fluids chart lists the same OAT coolant meeting MS.90032 for those systems.
On the instrument cluster, the Traction Battery Coolant Fluid Level Low Warning Light illuminates when the high voltage battery coolant fluid is low; the manual says to contact an authorized dealer if it stays on. A separate Hybrid Electric Vehicle System Service Warning Light illuminates when service to the hybrid electric system is needed, with a message in the cluster.
From the 2026 Jeep Grand Cherokee Owner's Manual (Fluid Capacities, page 391; Hybrid Engine Fluids And Lubricants, page 389; Hybrid warning lights, pages 122 and 123), read October 28, 2026.
If your Grand Cherokee overheats
The 2026 manual lists these potential signs of overheating: the temperature gauge is at HOT (H), a strong smell of coolant, white smoke coming from the engine or exhaust, and bubbles in the coolant in the coolant bottle. It says an overheating vehicle will need to be serviced by an authorized dealer.
If the temperature gauge is moving towards or close to HOT (H), the manual says you can reduce the potential for overheating: on highways, slow down; in city traffic, while stopped, place the transmission in NEUTRAL (N), but do not increase the engine idle speed while preventing vehicle motion with the brakes; turn the A/C off, since it adds heat to the engine cooling system; and turn the temperature control to maximum heat with the blower on high, so the heater core acts as a supplement to the radiator.
If the gauge reads "H," pull over and stop, and idle the vehicle with the air conditioner turned off until the pointer drops back into the normal range. If the pointer remains on "H" and you hear continuous chimes, turn the engine off immediately and call for service. Never try to open a cooling system pressure cap when the radiator or coolant bottle is hot: you or others can be badly burned by hot coolant or steam.
