Jeep Grand Cherokee Fuel Tank Size and Fuel Type
How many gallons does a Jeep Grand Cherokee hold, and what gas should go in it? Here is what the 2026 Jeep Grand Cherokee Owner's Manual lists for the approximate fuel capacity of gasoline and hybrid models, the octane each engine is designed for, the ethanol limit, and how capless refueling works.

The short answer
The 2026 Jeep Grand Cherokee Owner's Manual lists an approximate fuel capacity of 23 gallons (87 L) for gasoline models (all engines) and 19 gallons (71.9 L) for hybrid models with the 2.0L hybrid engine. Both the 2.0L Hurricane-4 engine and the 2.0L hybrid engine are designed for 87 octane regular unleaded; the manual says 91 or higher octane premium allows them to operate to optimal performance, most noticeable in hot weather or under heavy load such as towing. Do not use E-85 or gasoline with more than 15% ethanol.

The Fluid Capacities charts give these approximate fuel capacities:
| Model | Fuel (approximate) |
|---|---|
| Gasoline models (all engines) | 23 gal (87 L) |
| Hybrid models (2.0L hybrid engine) | 19 gal (71.9 L) |
From the 2026 Jeep Grand Cherokee Owner's Manual (Fluid Capacities, pages 390 and 391), read October 29, 2026. Other model years and the three-row Grand Cherokee L have their own owner's manuals; check yours.
What gas a Jeep Grand Cherokee takes, by engine
Octane ratings in the manual use the (R+M)/2 method. The manual lists fuel by engine:
| Engine | Fuel selection in the 2026 manual |
|---|---|
| 2.0L Hurricane-4 | 87 octane, 0-15% ethanol. The use of 91 or higher octane premium gasoline allows the engine to operate to optimal performance, most noticeable in hot weather or under heavy load conditions, such as while towing. |
| 2.0L hybrid | 87 octane, 0-15% ethanol. The same note applies: 91 or higher octane premium allows optimal performance, most noticeable in hot weather or under heavy load. |
From the 2026 Jeep Grand Cherokee Owner's Manual (Fuel Requirements, page 386; Fluids And Lubricants: Fuel Selection, pages 388 and 389), read October 29, 2026.
The manual adds that a light knocking sound while using fuel of the required octane is not a cause for concern, but a heavy knocking sound means you should see a dealer immediately. Using gasoline with a lower octane than recommended can cause engine failure and may void the New Vehicle Limited Warranty.
Ethanol, additives and gasoline quality
The 2026 manual says not to use E-85, gasoline containing methanol, or gasoline containing more than 15% ethanol (E-15), and to watch pump labels, which should clearly say if a fuel contains more than 15% ethanol. Using those blends may cause starting and drivability problems, damage critical fuel system components, cause emissions to exceed the applicable standard and/or turn on the Malfunction Indicator Light.
It recommends gasolines with detergents, corrosion and stability additives, TOP TIER Detergent Gasoline when available, and reformulated gasoline. It does not recommend fuel additives sold as octane enhancers, recommends gasoline without MMT, and says indiscriminate use of fuel system cleaning agents should be avoided. If you notice hard starting, stalling or hesitation, it suggests trying another brand of gasoline before considering service.
From the 2026 Jeep Grand Cherokee Owner's Manual (Fuel Requirements; Reformulated Gasoline; Materials Added To Fuel; Gasoline/Oxygenate Blends; MMT In Gasoline; Fuel System Cautions, pages 386 and 387), read October 29, 2026.
How to refuel a Jeep Grand Cherokee
Gasoline models. There is no fuel filler cap: two flapper doors inside the filler pipe seal the system. The manual's steps:
- Open the fuel filler door by pushing near the rear outer edge of the door, near the center, to unlatch it, then rotate it fully open by hand.
- Insert the fuel nozzle fully into the filler pipe; the nozzle opens and holds the flapper doors while refueling.
- Fill the vehicle. When the nozzle clicks or shuts off, the tank is full.
- Wait five seconds before removing the nozzle to let fuel drain from it.
- Remove the nozzle and close the fuel door, pushing on the rear outer edge near the center to engage the latch.
Hybrid models. Put the vehicle in PARK and push the fuel filler door release button above the headlight switch. This starts a sequence that depressurizes the fuel system, and a message in the cluster shows when the vehicle is ready to be fueled. You then have 20 minutes to fuel; after that, push the button again. The door should take 15 seconds to open under normal conditions and may take longer in high temperatures or at high altitude; if you hear a hissing sound, wait until it stops. The door pops away from the vehicle; rotate it open by hand, insert the nozzle fully, fill until it clicks, wait five seconds, then remove the nozzle and close and latch the door. If the pump repeatedly clicks off before the tank is full, push the release button again; if that does not help, try a different pump, and see an authorized dealer if premature shutoff continues.
In certain cold conditions, ice may keep the fuel door from opening: lightly push around its perimeter to break the ice (on hybrid models, then press the release button again). Do not pry on the door. The manual also warns never to add fuel with the engine running, not to top off the tank after filling, and to always place portable fuel containers on the ground while filling them.
From the 2026 Jeep Grand Cherokee Owner's Manual (Refueling The Vehicle — Gasoline Models; Refueling The Vehicle — Hybrid Models, pages 181 and 182), read October 29, 2026.
When the low fuel light comes on
Per the 2026 manual, the Low Fuel Warning Light turns on and a chime sounds when the fuel level reaches approximately 2 gallons (7.5 L), and the light stays on until fuel is added. On vehicles equipped with a Fuel Level Sensor Failure Warning Light, that light comes on with a message on the display if a problem is detected with the fuel level sensor; if it comes on, see an authorized dealer immediately.
From the 2026 Jeep Grand Cherokee Owner's Manual (Low Fuel Warning Light; Fuel Level Sensor Failure Warning Light, page 124), read October 29, 2026.
