Jeep Grand Cherokee Oil Type and Capacity

The 2026 Jeep Grand Cherokee Owner's Manual covers two engines: the 2.0L Hurricane-4 in the gas models and the 2.0L engine in the 4xe hybrid. Here is the oil grade, the Mopar material standard, the capacity with filter, how to check the level and how often to change it.

The short answer

The 2026 Grand Cherokee manual recommends Mopar API SP/GF-6A Certified SAE 5W-30 full synthetic oil meeting Material Standard MS-13340 for both the 2.0L Hurricane-4 and the 4xe's 2.0L hybrid engine. Oil capacity with filter is 5 quarts (4.7 L) for each. Change it when Oil Change Required appears, within 500 miles, and never past 10,000 miles or 12 months.

EngineRecommended oilCapacity with filter
2.0L Hurricane-4 (gas models)Mopar API SP/GF-6A Certified SAE 5W-30 Full Synthetic Engine Oil meeting Material Standard MS-13340. Equivalent full synthetic SAE 5W-30 API SP oil can be used but must have the API trademark the manual lists for this engine.5 qt (4.7 L)
2.0L Hybrid (4xe)Mopar API SP/GF-6A Certified SAE 5W-30 Full Synthetic Engine Oil meeting Material Standard MS-13340. Equivalent full synthetic SAE 5W-30 oil can be used if it meets API SP/GF-6A certification; if none is available, the manual says to contact a local dealership for a recommendation.5 qt (4.7 L)

From the 2026 Jeep Grand Cherokee Owner's Manual (Technical Specifications: Gasoline and Hybrid Engine Fluids And Lubricants; Fluid Capacities), read October 27, 2026. Other model years can differ; check the manual for your year.

For both engines, the manual adds a caution: failure to use the recommended API SP/GF-6A or equivalent oil can cause engine damage not covered by the vehicle warranty. It also says the oil installed at the factory is a high-quality energy conserving lubricant, and that oil changes should be consistent with the climate conditions you expect to drive in.

What the API symbols on the bottle mean

The manual says the manufacturer only recommends API trademark oils. The API Starburst trademark certifies 0W-20, 0W-30 and 5W-30 engine oils, and the API Donut trademark certifies 0W-40 and 5W-40 engine oils.

Your engine was designed for synthetic engine oils, so use only synthetic, API approved oils. Synthetic oils that do not have both the correct API trademark and the correct SAE viscosity grade numbers should not be used.

How to check the oil level on a Grand Cherokee

Check the oil level at regular intervals, such as every fuel stop. The best time is about five minutes after a fully warmed-up engine is shut off, with the vehicle on level ground for the most accurate reading.

  1. Pull the engine oil dipstick and read the level. The dipstick has a crosshatched zone, which may be marked SAFE, MIN and MAX, or with dimples at the MIN and MAX ends.
  2. Keep the level within the crosshatch markings.
  3. Adding 1 qt (1.0 L) of oil when the reading is at the low end of the range raises the level to the high end.
  4. Use care when filling, and wipe up any oil spilled on top of the engine with an absorbent cloth or remove it with compressed air.

A new engine may use some oil in its first few thousand miles; the manual calls that a normal part of break-in and says to check the level often during that period and add oil as required.

How often to change Grand Cherokee oil

Your vehicle has an automatic oil change indicator. When "Oil Change Required" appears, have the vehicle serviced as soon as possible, within the next 500 miles. Frequent short trips, trailer towing and very hot or cold temperatures affect when the message comes on.

Under no circumstances should oil change intervals exceed 10,000 miles, 12 months or 350 hours of engine run time, whichever comes first. The manual notes the 350-hour limit is generally only a concern for fleet customers.

Replace the engine oil filter with a new one at every oil change, using a full-flow disposable filter. The manual says only high quality Mopar certified filters should be used, prefers bproauto filters as an alternative, and otherwise says to use only filters that meet or exceed SAE/USCAR-36 filter performance requirements.

What the manual says to avoid

Non-detergent oil

Never use non-detergent oil or straight mineral oil in the engine, or damage may result.

Chemical flushes

Do not use chemical flushes in your engine oil; the chemicals can damage the engine, and that damage is not covered by the New Vehicle Limited Warranty.

Additives

The manufacturer strongly recommends against adding any additives (other than leak detection dyes) to the engine oil, because its performance may be impaired by supplemental additives.

Wrong grade

Do not use synthetic oils without both the correct API trademark and the correct SAE viscosity grade.
