Jeep Maintenance Schedule: What Is Due and When
Jeep publishes one maintenance plan per model in the owner's manual, and it is simpler than most owners expect: an oil change indicator that sets the pace, a short list of items at every oil change, and a handful of mileage milestones. Here is the schedule for Wrangler, Grand Cherokee, Cherokee, Compass and Gladiator in one place.

Quick answer
Change the oil and filter when the oil change indicator comes on, or at 10,000 miles or 12 months, whichever is first (8,000 miles on some engines and under severe use; never more than 12 months). At every oil change, rotate the tires and inspect the brakes, battery, exhaust, suspension, CV boots and fluids. Replace the cabin air filter at 20,000 miles, the engine air filter at 30,000, spark plugs at 100,000 on the 3.6-liter V6 and sooner on turbo engines, and engine coolant at 10 years or 150,000 miles. Transfer case, front and rear axle fluid are due at 120,000 miles in normal use but every 60,000 if you tow, plow, go off-road regularly or drive in fleet or taxi duty. Jeep Wave covers the first few oil changes and rotations on a new Jeep; the schedule in your model year's manual is the one that applies.
What the oil change indicator does
Every current Jeep has an oil change indicator that counts engine revolutions, temperature and trip length rather than plain miles. It turns on a message (Oil Change Required) when the oil is due, which on most models is at or before 10,000 miles or 12 months. Short trips, towing, idling and cold weather bring it on sooner. It does not track anything else, so the mileage items below are yours to schedule, and the technician resets the indicator at each service.
The schedule by mileage
| When | Service |
|---|---|
| Every oil change indicator, or 10,000 mi / 12 months | Engine oil and filter (0W-20 full synthetic on most engines); rotate tires; inspect brake pads, rotors and hoses, battery, exhaust, suspension, CV and axle boots, coolant level and condition, and the air filter |
| 20,000 mi | Replace cabin air filter; inspect front suspension, tie rod ends and boots; inspect brake linings and parking brake |
| 30,000 mi | Replace engine air filter; inspect exhaust and heat shields; inspect transfer case and axle fluid levels |
| 40,000 mi | 20,000-mile items; replace axle fluid if used for towing, off-road, plowing or fleet duty |
| 60,000 mi | 20,000 and 30,000-mile items; replace spark plugs on 2.0L turbo engines; change transfer case fluid under severe use; inspect PCV valve |
| 100,000 mi | Replace spark plugs on the 3.6L V6; inspect accessory drive belt |
| 120,000 mi | Change transfer case, front and rear axle fluid (normal use); inspect drive belt and tensioner |
| 10 years / 150,000 mi | Flush and replace engine coolant (OAT coolant); every 5 years after |
| Every 2 years | Replace brake fluid (recommended for models with heavy brake use); inspect A/C system |
Intervals vary by model year and engine; the 4xe plug-in hybrids and the Hurricane 3.0L turbo have their own tables. Severe use in Jeep's manuals includes frequent short trips, hot or dusty conditions, towing, trailer hauling, off-road driving, snow plowing, and taxi, police or delivery service.
Severe use is common on a Jeep
If your Wrangler sees trails, your Gladiator tows, or your Grand Cherokee plows the driveway, the manual moves you to the severe schedule: axle and transfer case fluid at 60,000 miles instead of 120,000, more frequent brake and suspension inspections, and an air filter check at every oil change. Water crossings deserve a look at the axle breathers and fluids afterward regardless of mileage. Repeated winter short trips in the northwest suburbs count as severe use too.
Jeep Wave and what it covers
New Jeeps come with Jeep Wave, which includes the first scheduled oil changes and tire rotations (the number of visits depends on the model year and program terms), 24/7 roadside assistance and trip-interruption coverage. It covers the oil change indicator visits, not the mileage items. Our service team logs every Jeep Wave visit to your VIN. Jeep service in Streamwood.
Frequently asked questions
