Ram 2500 Warning Lights Guide

The 2026 Ram 2500/3500 Owner's Manual says warning and indicator lights come on in the instrument panel together with a dedicated message and/or acoustic signal when applicable, and that some telltales are optional or model specific and may not appear. Here is what the main 2026 Ram 2500 lights mean and what that manual says to do, starting with the ones that mean stop. The same manual covers the Ram 3500.

The short answer

On a 2026 Ram 2500, the 2026 Ram 2500/3500 Owner's Manual says to stop for the red oil pressure, engine coolant temperature, oil temperature and transmission temperature lights, and to have the truck checked immediately if the red brake light stays on with the parking brake released. On diesel trucks, if the yellow Water In Fuel light stays on, the manual says not to start the vehicle before the water is drained from the fuel filters. A check engine light that flashes while the engine is running means immediate service is required. Many other yellow lights mean a system needs service; most indicators show a mode such as Tow/Haul or 4WD Low is on.

2026 Ram 2500 warning lights that mean stop

LightWhat it meansWhat the 2026 manual says to do
Oil Pressure Warning Light (red)Low engine oil pressure, with a chime. It does not show how much oil is in the engine; the oil level must be checked under the hood.If it turns on while driving, stop the vehicle, shut off the engine as soon as possible and contact an authorized dealer. Do not operate the vehicle until the cause is corrected.
Engine Coolant Temperature Warning Light (red)The engine is overheating, with a single chime; if the temperature reaches the upper limit, a continuous chime sounds for four minutes or until the engine is able to cool, whichever comes first.Safely pull over and stop. If the A/C is on, turn it off, shift the transmission into NEUTRAL and idle. If the temperature reading does not return to normal, turn the engine off immediately and call for service.
Oil Temperature Warning Light (red)Engine oil temperature is high.If it turns on while driving, stop the vehicle and shut off the engine as soon as possible. Wait for the oil temperature to return to normal levels.
Transmission Temperature Warning Light (red)High transmission fluid temperature, which may occur with strenuous usage such as trailer towing.Stop the vehicle and run the engine at idle or slightly faster, in PARK or NEUTRAL, until the light turns off. Then you may continue to drive normally.
Brake Warning Light (red), parking brake releasedWith the fluid at the full mark, a possible brake hydraulic system malfunction or a Brake Booster problem detected by the ABS/ESC system. It also comes on when the brake fluid level is low or there is a problem with the Anti-Lock Brake System reservoir.Part of the brake system may have failed and it will take longer to stop. Have the vehicle checked immediately; if brake failure is indicated, immediate repair is necessary.

From the 2026 Ram 2500/3500 Owner's Manual (Warning Lights And Messages: Red Warning Lights, pages 136 to 138), read October 29, 2026.

The manual warns that continuing to drive with the transmission temperature light on could cause the fluid to boil over, contact hot engine or exhaust components and cause a fire, and that continuous driving with it on will eventually cause severe transmission damage or transmission failure. If the red brake light comes on together with the ABS light, it points to an Electronic Brake Force Distribution (EBD) failure, and immediate repair to the ABS system is required.

Other red Ram 2500 warning lights

These red lights point to a fault, an open door or tailgate, a disconnected trailer brake or an unbuckled belt rather than an immediate stop.

Air bag

Indicates an air bag fault. It comes on for four to eight seconds as a bulb check. If it is not on during startup, stays on or turns on while driving, have the system inspected at an authorized dealer as soon as possible.

Battery charge

The battery is not charging properly. If it stays on while the engine is running, there may be a malfunction with the charging system; contact an authorized dealer as soon as possible.

Electronic throttle control

A problem with the ETC system. Cycle the ignition when safely stopped in PARK (P); if the light stays on with the vehicle running, it will usually be drivable but should see an authorized dealer as soon as possible. If it keeps flashing while running, immediate service is required and the vehicle may require towing.

Trailer brake disconnected

The trailer brake has been disconnected.

Door, hood or tailgate open

A door, the hood or the tailgate is open or not fully closed. A single chime sounds if the vehicle is moving.

Seat belt reminder

The driver or front passenger seat belt is unbuckled; the light flashes or stays on and a chime sounds.

From the 2026 Ram 2500/3500 Owner's Manual (Red Warning Lights, pages 136 to 138), read October 29, 2026. Drowsiness Detected and Vehicle Security lights are also red, if equipped.

Service 4WD (if equipped)The 4WD system is not functioning properly and service is required. Drive to the nearest service center and have the vehicle serviced immediately.
Electronic Stability Control (ESC) Active (if equipped)Comes on during an ESC event. If it comes on continuously with the engine running, a malfunction has been detected; if it stays on after several ignition cycles and several miles above 30 mph, see an authorized dealer as soon as possible.
ESC OFF (if equipped)ESC is off. It is back on each time the ignition is turned to ON/RUN or ACC/ON/RUN.
Air Suspension Fault (if equipped)A fault has been detected with the air suspension system.
Rear Axle Locker Fault (if equipped)A rear axle locker fault has been detected.
Sway Bar FaultA fault in the sway bar disconnect system.
Low Coolant LevelThe vehicle coolant level is low.
Low FuelThe fuel level has reached approximately 3.2 gal (12 L), with a single chime. It stays on until fuel is added.
Loose Fuel Filler Cap (if equipped)The fuel filler cap is loose. Properly close it; if the light does not turn off, see an authorized dealer.
Fuel Level Sensor Failure (if equipped)A problem with the Fuel Level Sensor, with a message. See an authorized dealer immediately.
Icy Road Condition (if equipped)Comes on during an icy road condition.
Cruise Control Fault, ACC Fault, Service FCW/PEB, Service Active Lane ManagementThe named system is not functioning properly and needs service. Contact an authorized dealer.
Drowsy Driver Detected System Fault, TSR Fault, Rear Fog Fail (if equipped)The named system has a fault. For DDD and TSR, the manual says to see an authorized dealer.

From the 2026 Ram 2500/3500 Owner's Manual (Yellow Warning Lights, pages 138 to 141), read October 29, 2026. Some lights are optional and may not appear on your truck.

Diesel lights: Water In Fuel, Wait To Start, Low DEF

These yellow indicator lights appear on diesel trucks, if equipped. The first one is the most important to know before you start the engine.

IndicatorWhat the 2026 manual says
Water In FuelWater has been detected in the fuel filters. If this light remains on, do not start the vehicle before you drain the water from the fuel filters, to prevent engine damage.
Wait To StartComes on in cold conditions for up to two and a half seconds when the ignition is turned to RUN, depending on engine coolant and intake air temperature. The vehicle will not initiate start until the light is no longer displayed; it may not light at all when temperatures are warm enough.
Low Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF)The vehicle is low on DEF.
Cold Ambient Derate ModeAn engine power reduction is active to protect the turbocharger in cold ambient temperatures.
Diesel Exhaust Brake (yellow) and Automatic Diesel Exhaust Brake (green)The exhaust brake is on in full strength mode (yellow) or has switched to Automatic mode (green).

From the 2026 Ram 2500/3500 Owner's Manual (Yellow and Green Indicator Lights, pages 141 to 143), read October 29, 2026.

Ram 2500 check engine light: steady or flashing

The Engine Check/Malfunction Indicator Light (MIL) is part of the OBD II system that monitors the engine and automatic transmission control systems. It lights in ON/RUN before engine start; if it does not come on when switching from OFF to ON/RUN, have that checked promptly.

Conditions such as a loose or missing gas cap or poor quality fuel can turn it on after engine start. The 2026 Ram 2500/3500 manual says the vehicle should be serviced if the light stays on through several typical driving styles, and that in most situations it will drive normally and will not require towing. It also cautions that prolonged driving with the MIL on could cause damage to the vehicle control system and affect fuel economy and driveability.

A MIL that flashes while the engine is running is different. The manual says it alerts serious conditions that could lead to immediate loss of power or severe catalytic converter damage, and its caution says that if the MIL is flashing, severe catalytic converter damage and power loss will soon occur and immediate service is required. A malfunctioning catalytic converter can reach higher temperatures than normal and can cause a fire if you drive slowly or park over dry plants, wood, cardboard or other flammable material.

A flash with the ignition ON and the engine not started is a separate case: in the manual's emissions readiness test, a MIL that flashes for about 10 seconds after the bulb check means the OBD II system is not ready for an inspection test.

From the 2026 Ram 2500/3500 Owner's Manual (Engine Check/Malfunction Indicator Warning Light, pages 139 and 140; Emissions Inspection And Maintenance Programs, page 144), read October 29, 2026.

Tire pressure light: steady or flashing

A steady Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) light with a message means tire pressure is lower than the recommended value and/or slow pressure loss is occurring; the display shows the indications for each affected tire. Stop and check your tires as soon as possible and inflate them to the pressure on the vehicle placard or tire inflation pressure label. The manual also says not to continue driving with one or more flat tires.

If the light flashes for about one minute and then stays on, the TPMS itself has a malfunction and may not be able to detect or signal low pressure as intended. Replacement or alternate tires or wheels are one possible cause, and the manual recommends having sensor function checked at an authorized dealer after using an aftermarket tire sealant.

From the 2026 Ram 2500/3500 Owner's Manual (Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) Warning Light, pages 140 and 141), read October 29, 2026.

Ram 2500 indicator lights: 4WD, towing and air suspension

These indicator lights show that a feature or mode is on.

IndicatorWhat it shows
4WD High, 4WD Lock, 4WD Low (yellow)The transfer case mode in use; in each, the front and rear driveshafts are mechanically locked together. Low range gives a greater gear reduction for more torque at the wheels.
NEUTRAL (yellow, if equipped)The 4WD power transfer case is in NEUTRAL and the front and rear driveshafts are disengaged from the powertrain.
Axle lock and Sway Bar (yellow)The rear axle, or front and rear axles, are locked, or the front sway bar is disconnected (if equipped).
Tow/Haul (yellow)Tow/Haul mode is selected.
Trailer Merge Assist (yellow, if equipped)Trailer Merge Assist has been activated.
Air suspension lights (yellow, if equipped)Alternate Trailer Height or Bed Lowering mode is set, the truck is changing ride height (blinking), or Payload Protection is active because maximum payload may have been exceeded.
Snowplow Mode (yellow, if equipped)Snowplow mode has been activated.
Hill Descent Control (white, if equipped)Solid when HDC is armed. HDC can only be armed in 4WD Low below 20 mph (32 km/h).

From the 2026 Ram 2500/3500 Owner's Manual (Yellow, Green, White and Blue Indicator Lights, pages 141 to 144), read October 29, 2026. Indicators depend on equipment.
