DEF on a Ram 2500/3500 Cummins: Refill and Warnings

Every Ram 2500 and 3500 with the Cummins turbo diesel uses diesel exhaust fluid (DEF) to clean up its exhaust. When the DEF runs low or the system has a fault, the truck warns you and can eventually limit itself to 5 mph. Here is how the system works, how to refill it the right way, and what each warning means, from the 2026 Ram 2500/3500 Owner's Manual.

The short answer

Fill the DEF tank (its filler is on the driver's side or in the fuel door) with API Certified DEF that meets ISO 22241, and stop at the first nozzle shut-off; do not top it off. When DEF Low Refill Soon appears, a pickup needs approximately 5 gallons. If you ignore the warnings, the truck counts down and can be limited to 5 mph until at least 2 gallons are added. Never put DEF in the diesel tank or anything but DEF in the DEF tank.

What DEF does on a Ram 2500/3500 Cummins

The Cummins turbo diesel uses a Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) system to meet EPA diesel emissions standards. A small quantity of DEF is injected into the exhaust upstream of a catalyst, where it converts nitrogen oxides (NOx) into nitrogen and water vapor.

The system includes the DEF tank, pump and injector, electrically heated DEF lines, a DEF control module, NOx and temperature sensors and the SCR catalyst. The 2026 Ram 2500/3500 Owner's Manual notes two things owners often ask about: an occasional clicking noise from the DEF dosing module is normal, and the DEF pump runs for a while after the engine is shut off to purge the system.

How fast the truck uses DEF depends on driving conditions such as altitude, speed and load, and on outside temperature. The DEF gauge in the instrument cluster shows how much is left.

How to refill DEF on a Ram 2500/3500

Use Mopar DEF or an equivalent that is API Certified to the ISO 22241 standard; the manual warns that fluids not API Certified to ISO 22241 may damage the system. You can fill up at any DEF distributor. These steps follow the 2026 Ram 2500/3500 Owner's Manual:

  1. Remove the cap from the DEF tank filler. It is on the driver's side of the truck or inside the fuel door, next to the diesel filler.
  2. From a pump nozzle: insert the DEF nozzle in the filler tube and stop at the first shut-off, which means the tank is full. Do not keep filling.
  3. From containers: check the expiration date and read the label first. After the low-DEF indication appears, add no more than 4 gallons from containers. Use a new funnel or nozzle, or one used only for DEF.
  4. Stop immediately if DEF splashes or wells back up in the filler neck, then reinstall the cap.
  5. Wipe up any spill completely; on the ground, clean it with water and soak it up with an absorbent material.

DEF mistakes to avoid

Never in the fuel tank

Do not start the engine if DEF is accidentally added to the diesel fuel tank. The manual says it can severely damage the engine, including the fuel pump and injectors.

Nothing but DEF in the DEF tank

Diesel fuel, additives, gasoline or any petroleum product contaminates the whole DEF system and requires its replacement, even at less than 1 oz. per 78 gallons.

Do not overfill

Do not top off the DEF tank. Excessive overfilling can cause a check engine light, fault codes and inaccurate level readings, and an overfilled tank that freezes can be damaged.

Use the right containers

Anything that touches DEF should be plastic or stainless steel. Copper, brass, aluminum, iron and non-stainless steel corrode.

Low DEF warning messages and the 5 mph limit

When the DEF level gets low, the instrument cluster steps through these messages:

MessageWhat it meansWhat to do
DEF Low Refill SoonThe low level has been reached. Shown at start-up and more often while driving, with a single chime.Refill soon. Approximately 5 gallons refills the tank on pickups (about 7 gallons on chassis cabs).
Speed Limited to 5 MPH in XXX mi Refill DEFThe first warning was ignored; the message stays on and the chime gets more frequent.Add DEF now. The chime gets more frequent unless up to 2 gallons are added.
5 MPH Max Speed on Restart, Long Idle or Refuel Refill DEFThe counter has reached zero. The truck is limited to 5 mph after the first of: a restart, idling about an hour or more, or adding fuel. Add a minimum of 2 gallons of DEF to restore normal operation.

DEF fault messages: see a dealer

These messages mean the system found a fault, a fluid other than DEF, or tampering, not just a low level. If the system is not serviced within 200 miles of the fault being detected, the truck may be limited to 5 mph.

Incorrect DEF Detected See DealerDrive to your nearest authorized dealer and have the truck serviced as soon as possible.

DEF in cold weather

DEF may freeze at or below 12°F. The Ram is designed for this: an electric heater inside the DEF tank works automatically, and if the DEF does freeze, the truck operates normally until it thaws.

At 12°F and below, the DEF gauge can sit at a fixed position for long periods, and after a refill it may not show the new level for several drives while the tank heater warms the fluid. Around 40°F you may see the gauge rise as the tank thaws. The manual says these are normal.

Because an overfilled tank that freezes can be damaged, take extra care with containers: you can safely add a maximum of 2 gallons from portable containers when the DEF gauge reads half full. For storage, DEF kept between 10°F and 90°F lasts at least one year.

Ram 2500/3500 DEF FAQ

How big is the DEF tank on a Ram 2500 or 3500 Cummins?

The 2026 Ram 2500/3500 Owner's Manual lists the diesel exhaust fluid tank at 7.5 gallons (28.4 liters) on the 6.7L Cummins.

How much DEF do I add when the low DEF message comes on?

When DEF Low Refill Soon first appears, approximately 5 gallons refills the tank on pickups and about 7 gallons on chassis cabs. Stop at the first nozzle shut-off.

What happens if my Ram runs out of DEF?

The cluster counts down, and once the counter reaches zero the truck is limited to 5 mph after the next restart, long idle of about an hour or more, or refuel. Adding a minimum of 2 gallons of DEF restores normal operation.

What kind of DEF should I use in my Ram?

Mopar DEF or an equivalent that is API Certified to the ISO 22241 standard. The manual warns other fluids may damage the system.

Does DEF freeze?

DEF may freeze at or below 12 degrees F. The tank has an automatic electric heater, and if the DEF freezes the truck operates normally until it thaws. Do not overfill, since an overfilled tank that freezes can be damaged.

What if I put DEF in the diesel tank by mistake?

Do not start the engine. The manual says DEF in the fuel tank can severely damage the engine, including the fuel pump and injectors. Contact an authorized dealer for service.

Does Elgin CDJR service the DEF system?

Yes. We service the Cummins 6.7-liter turbo diesel in the Ram 2500 and 3500, including diesel exhaust fluid (DEF) and emissions systems.
