Dodge Dart: Specs, Trims and What to Know Before You Buy One Used

The Dodge Dart was built in Belvidere, Illinois, about 40 miles from our Streamwood store, from 2012 until September 2016. Every Dart is now a used car, and most of them have stayed in the Chicago area. Here is what each model year offered, how the three engines compare, and what we check when one comes in on trade.

Quick answer

The Dodge Dart is a compact four-door sedan sold for the 2013 through 2016 model years. It came with three four-cylinder engines: a 160-hp 2.0-liter, a 160-hp 1.4-liter turbo with 184 lb-ft of torque, and a 184-hp 2.4-liter, each with a six-speed manual or automatic (a dual-clutch automatic on the turbo). EPA ratings ran from 23/33 mpg (2.4L) to 27/41 mpg (1.4L turbo Aero). Trims were SE, SXT, Aero, Limited and GT, cut to SXT Sport, Turbo and GT Sport for the last 2016 cars. Production ended September 2, 2016 and the Dart was not replaced; Dodge no longer sells a compact car.

The 2.4-liter became standard on SXT, Limited and GT for 2014. The 1.4-liter turbo is the most fuel-efficient and the most complex; the 2.4-liter is the easiest to live with. All Darts are front-wheel drive.

Size, space and safety

Dimensions

183.9 in. long on a 106.4-in. wheelbase, 72.0 in. wide, 57.7 in. tall. Curb weight 3,186 to 3,348 lb, heavy for the class, which is why it rides quietly and feels planted on the Tollway.

Trunk and cabin

13.1 cu ft trunk with a 60/40 folding rear seat. Five seats; rear legroom is good for a compact, headroom is tight for tall passengers. The optional 8.4-in. touchscreen is the one to look for.

Safety

IIHS Top Safety Pick (2013) with Good scores in moderate overlap, side, roof and head restraint tests and Acceptable in the small overlap test. Ten airbags, stability control and a backup camera were standard or available on every trim.

Built in Illinois

Assembled at the Belvidere plant with engines from Dundee, Michigan. Belvidere later built the Jeep Cherokee, which means many Dart parts and technicians are still local.

What to check on a used Dart

  1. Confirm which engine it has (the VIN and the hood label tell you). The 1.4-liter turbo with the dual-clutch automatic has the most owner complaints about shift quality; drive it in stop-and-go traffic before you decide.
  2. On 2.0 and 2.4-liter cars, check for oil consumption between changes and ask for the service history. Regular 5W-20 or 0W-20 changes matter on these engines.
  3. Test the 8.4-inch Uconnect screen for ghost touches or delamination, a known issue on 2013-2015 units.
  4. Look at the rear tires and alignment. Uneven inner wear usually means a bent rear control arm from a pothole.
  5. Run the VIN for open recalls. Our service department does this at no charge, and recall repairs are free at any Dodge dealer.
  6. Budget for a timing belt on the 1.4-liter turbo (an interval item); the 2.0 and 2.4-liter engines use a timing chain.

If you want something newer

Dodge has not sold a compact sedan since the Dart, and the Dodge Hornet compact crossover ended production in 2026. Buyers who liked the Dart's size usually look at a late-model Jeep Compass, a used Chrysler 200 (the Dart's mid-size sibling, built through 2017), or a new Dodge Charger if they want the brand's current sedan. We stock all of them, and we take Darts in trade every month.
