How to Reset the Oil Life on a Jeep Wrangler
When your Wrangler is due for an oil change, the instrument cluster shows "Oil Change Required" with a chime, and it comes back each time the ignition is placed in ON/RUN until the indicator is reset. If an authorized dealer changes your oil, they reset it for you. If someone else does the oil change, here are the two ways to reset it, from the 2026 Jeep Wrangler Owner's Manual.

The short answer
After the oil and filter change, put the ignition in ON/RUN without pressing the brake (do not start the engine), go to Vehicle Info, Oil Life in the instrument cluster display, and hold the OK button until it reads 100%. Backup method: with the ignition in ON/RUN and the engine off, slowly press the accelerator all the way three times within ten seconds, then turn the ignition OFF without pressing the brake.
What the Oil Change Required message means
Your Wrangler may have an engine oil change indicator system. When the next scheduled oil change is due, "Oil Change Required" shows in the instrument cluster display for five seconds after a single chime. On vehicles without an instrument cluster display, "Change Oil" flashes in the odometer instead.
The system is duty cycle based, so the interval can change with how you drive. Unless it is reset, the message appears every time you put the ignition in ON/RUN. Pushing and releasing the OK button hides it for now but does not reset it.
Hybrid models (if equipped) have one more point: the fuel and oil still age even if the vehicle is not driven, and the driver is notified if the engine is being run to maintain the oil and fuel systems.
How to reset oil life on a Jeep Wrangler
Reset the indicator only after the scheduled maintenance has been done. These steps are from the 2026 Jeep Wrangler Owner's Manual:
- Without pushing the brake pedal, place the ignition in ON/RUN. Do not start the engine.
- In the instrument cluster display, navigate to the Oil Life submenu in Vehicle Info.
- Push and hold the OK button until the gauge resets to 100%. The manual notes the reset works if conditions are met.
From the 2026 Jeep Wrangler Owner's Manual (Instrument Cluster Display: Oil Life Reset; Vehicle Info), read October 26, 2026. Other model years may differ; check your own owner's manual.
Backup method: the accelerator pedal reset
The manual also gives a secondary method:
- Without pushing the brake pedal, place the ignition in ON/RUN. Do not start the engine.
- Fully press the accelerator pedal, slowly, three times within ten seconds.
- Without pushing the brake pedal, place the ignition in OFF.
If the message comes on again when you start the vehicle, the indicator did not reset. Repeat the procedure if necessary.
From the 2026 Jeep Wrangler Owner's Manual (Secondary Method For Oil Change Reset Procedure), read October 26, 2026.
Which oil a 2026 Wrangler takes
| Engine | Recommended oil |
|---|---|
| 2.0L | Mopar API SP/GF-6A Certified SAE 5W-30 full synthetic meeting MS-13340, or an equivalent full synthetic 5W-30 API SP oil with the API Donut trademark. |
| 3.6L | Mopar SAE 0W-20 full synthetic meeting MS-6395, or an equivalent full synthetic 0W-20 with the API Starburst trademark. |
| 6.4L | Mopar API Certified SAE 0W-40 full synthetic meeting MS-A0921, or an equivalent full synthetic 0W-40 with the API Donut trademark. |
From the 2026 Jeep Wrangler Owner's Manual (Fluids And Lubricants: Engine Fluid And Lubricants), read October 26, 2026. The manual cautions that using an oil other than the recommended API SP/GF-6A or equivalent in the 2.0L can cause engine damage not covered by the warranty.
How often a Wrangler needs an oil change
Follow the indicator
Change the oil and filter at every interval shown by the oil change indicator system.
Never exceed: 2.0L, Hybrid, 3.6L
Oil change intervals should never exceed 10,000 miles, 12 months or 350 hours of engine run time, whichever comes first. The 350-hour limit is generally a concern only for fleet customers.
Never exceed: 6.4L
Never exceed 6,000 miles or six months, whichever comes first. The indicator does not track time, so change the oil at six months even if the message is not on. Severe duty (dusty, off-road, or mostly idling or very low RPM): 4,000 miles or 350 hours.
Same visit (2.0L, Hybrid, 3.6L)
At every oil change interval the maintenance plan also lists rotating the tires and inspecting the battery, brakes, CV and universal joints, cooling system and exhaust.
Monthly checks (2.0L, Hybrid, 3.6L)
Once a month or before a long trip, check the engine oil level, washer fluid, tire pressures and the coolant, brake and power steering fluids.
From the 2026 Jeep Wrangler Owner's Manual (Scheduled Servicing; Maintenance Plan for the 2.0L, Hybrid and 3.6L; Scheduled Servicing: 6.4L), read October 26, 2026. The 6.4L has its own check lists in the manual.
