How to Put a Jeep Wrangler in 4WD

A Wrangler's four-wheel drive is run by the transfer case lever. Depending on the model, the transfer case has four positions (2H, 4H, N, 4L) or five (2H, 4H AUTO, 4H PART TIME, N, 4L). Here is what each position does, how fast you can be going when you shift, the steps for getting into and out of 4L, and when the 2026 Jeep Wrangler Owner's Manual says to use low range.

The short answer

To go from 2H to 4H (or 4H AUTO or 4H PART TIME), move the transfer case lever with the vehicle stopped or moving; the preferred speed is 0 to 45 mph. Ease off the accelerator after the shift and apply a constant force on the lever. To shift into or out of 4L, slow to a roll of 1 to 3 mph, shift an automatic into NEUTRAL (or press the clutch on a manual), move the lever firmly to the new position without pausing in N, then shift back into DRIVE or release the clutch.

Jeep Wrangler transfer case positions

PositionWhat it doesUse it for
2HTwo-Wheel Drive High Range.Normal street and highway driving on dry, hard-surfaced roads.
4H AUTO (five-position transfer case)Sends power to the rear wheels with the front axle engaged; four-wheel drive engages automatically when the vehicle senses a loss of traction.Varying road conditions. Because the front axle is engaged, fuel economy is lower than in 2H.
4H or 4H PART TIMEFour-Wheel Drive High Range. Locks the front and rear driveshafts together so the front and rear wheels turn at the same speed.Additional traction on loose, slippery road surfaces only.
N (Neutral)Disengages both the front and rear driveshafts from the powertrain.Flat towing behind another vehicle. The vehicle can roll in N even with an automatic in PARK, so always fully apply the parking brake.
4LFour-Wheel Drive Low Range. Low-speed four-wheel drive with the driveshafts locked together and maximum pulling power.Loose, slippery surfaces only. Do not exceed 25 mph.

From the 2026 Jeep Wrangler Owner's Manual (Four-Wheel Drive: Four-Position Transfer Case, Five-Position Transfer Case), read October 27, 2026. Check your own Wrangler's lever to see which transfer case it has.

The manual says the 4H and 4L positions are not intended for normal driving. Driving in them on hard-surfaced roads causes increased tire wear and damage to the driveline components.

How to shift between 2H and 4H

Shifting between 2H and 4H (or 4H AUTO), and between 2H/4H AUTO and 4H PART TIME, can be made with the vehicle stopped or in motion. The preferred shifting speed is 0 to 45 mph.

  • Do not accelerate while shifting the transfer case.
  • Apply a constant force on the transfer case lever.
  • If you are moving, momentarily release the accelerator after completing the shift; the transfer case engages or disengages faster.
  • Do not shift while only the front or rear wheels are spinning. The front and rear driveshaft speeds must be equal for the shift to take place, and shifting while only one end spins can damage the transfer case.

Shifting effort increases with speed, which is normal. Delayed shifts out of four-wheel drive can come from uneven tire wear, low or uneven tire pressures, excessive vehicle loading or cold temperatures, and in cold weather the lever can take more effort until the transfer case fluid warms up.

From the 2026 Jeep Wrangler Owner's Manual (Shifting Procedures: 2H To 4H Or 4H To 2H; 2H To 4H AUTO; 2H/4H AUTO To 4H PART TIME), read October 27, 2026.

How to shift a Wrangler into or out of 4L

The manual's steps for going from 4H (or 4H PART TIME or 4H AUTO) to 4L, or from 4L back to 4H:

  1. With the vehicle rolling at 1 to 3 mph, shift an automatic transmission into NEUTRAL (N), or press the clutch pedal on a manual transmission.
  2. While the vehicle is coasting at 1 to 3 mph, shift the transfer case lever firmly to the desired position.
  3. Do not pause with the transfer case in N (Neutral).
  4. Once the shift is completed, place the automatic transmission into DRIVE, or release the clutch pedal on a manual transmission.

Shifting into or out of 4L is possible with the vehicle completely stopped, but the mating teeth may not be aligned, so several attempts may be needed. The preferred method is rolling at 1 to 3 mph. Avoid engaging or disengaging 4L faster than 1 to 3 mph, and do not drive the vehicle unless the transfer case is fully engaged: a partly engaged transfer case can cause damage or loss of power and vehicle control.

From the 2026 Jeep Wrangler Owner's Manual (Shifting Procedures: 4H To 4L Or 4L To 4H; 4H PART TIME/4H AUTO To 4L Or 4L To 4H PART TIME/4H AUTO), read October 27, 2026.

When to use 4L

When driving off-road, the manual says to shift into 4L for additional traction and control on slippery or difficult terrain, for going up or down steep hills, and to increase low-speed pulling power. Limit it to extreme situations such as deep snow, mud, steep inclines or sand, and avoid speeds over 25 mph in 4L. Do not use 4L on dry pavement; driveline hardware damage can result.

In 4L the engine turns about three times faster than in 2H or 4H at the same road speed, or about four times faster on Rubicon models, so take care not to overspeed the engine.

  • Heavy snow: for additional control and traction at slower speeds, shift the transmission into a low gear and the transfer case into 4L if necessary. Do not shift lower than you need to keep moving; over-revving can spin the wheels.
  • Deep mud: use DRIVE with the transfer case in 4L to keep your momentum. Before entering a mud hole, get out and check how deep it is, whether there are hidden obstacles and whether the vehicle could be recovered if stuck.
  • Losing momentum in snow or mud: turn the steering wheel no more than a quarter turn quickly back and forth while still applying throttle for fresh traction.

Wrangler 4WD indicator lights

4WD Indicator Light

Shows the vehicle is in four-wheel drive with the front and rear driveshafts mechanically locked together. It comes on when the transfer case is shifted into 4H.

4WD Low Indicator Light

Shows the vehicle is in 4WD Low. Low range gives a greater gear reduction ratio for more torque at the wheels.

4WD Part Time Indicator Light

Shows the vehicle is in the four-wheel drive part time mode (if equipped).

From the 2026 Jeep Wrangler Owner's Manual (Instrument Cluster: Yellow Indicator Lights), read October 27, 2026. Indicator lights are listed as "if equipped".

What the manual says to watch for

Matching tires

Four-wheel drive depends on tires of equal size, type and circumference on each wheel. Any difference hurts shifting and can damage the transfer case.

Do not overdrive the traction

Four-wheel drive improves traction, which tempts drivers to exceed safe turning and stopping speeds. Do not go faster than road conditions permit.

Parking in N

Never leave the vehicle with the transfer case in N without the parking brake fully engaged; it can roll even with the automatic in PARK.

Hard-surfaced roads

Keep 4H PART TIME and 4L for loose, slippery surfaces. On hard-surfaced roads they cause tire wear and driveline damage.

From the 2026 Jeep Wrangler Owner's Manual (Four-Wheel Drive warnings and cautions), read October 27, 2026.

Jeep Wrangler 4WD FAQ

Can I shift my Wrangler into 4H while driving?

Yes. Shifting between 2H and 4H can be made stopped or in motion; the preferred speed is 0 to 45 mph. Do not accelerate while shifting, and do not shift while only the front or rear wheels are spinning.

How do I put my Jeep Wrangler in 4 Low?

Roll at 1 to 3 mph, put an automatic in NEUTRAL (or press the clutch on a manual), move the transfer case lever firmly to 4L without pausing in N, then shift back to DRIVE or release the clutch.

Why will my Wrangler not go into 4L when stopped?

Shifting into 4L when completely stopped is possible, but the mating teeth may not be aligned, so it can take several attempts. The manual's preferred method is with the vehicle rolling at 1 to 3 mph.

Can I drive in 4H on dry pavement?

Not in 4H or 4H PART TIME. Those positions lock the front and rear driveshafts and are for loose, slippery surfaces; on hard-surfaced roads they cause tire wear and driveline damage. On a five-position transfer case, 4H AUTO is the position for varying road conditions.

How fast can I drive in 4L?

Do not exceed 25 mph in 4L.

What is the N position on the Wrangler transfer case for?

N disengages both driveshafts and is used for flat towing behind another vehicle. Always fully apply the parking brake, because the vehicle can roll in N even with an automatic in PARK.
