Jeep Compass Warning Lights Guide

The 2026 Jeep Compass Owner's Manual says warning and indicator lights come on in the instrument panel together with a dedicated message and/or acoustic signal when applicable, and that some telltales are optional or model specific and may not appear. Here is what the main 2026 Compass lights mean and what that manual says to do, starting with the ones that mean stop.

Indicators2026: mostly show a mode is on

The short answer

On a 2026 Compass, the 2026 Jeep Compass Owner's Manual says to stop for the red oil pressure, engine temperature, oil temperature and transmission temperature lights, and to have the vehicle checked immediately if the red brake light stays on with the parking brake released. A check engine light that flashes while the engine is running means severe catalytic converter damage and power loss will soon occur; immediate service is required. Many yellow lights, such as ABS, Service 4WD or Service Stop/Start, mean a system needs service. Most indicator lights, such as 4WD Low, Auto HOLD or Sport mode, show that a feature or mode is on.

2026 Jeep Compass warning lights that mean stop

LightWhat it meansWhat the 2026 manual says to do
Oil Pressure Warning Light (red)Low engine oil pressure, with a chime. It does not show how much oil is in the engine; the oil level must be checked under the hood.If it turns on while driving, stop the vehicle, shut off the engine as soon as possible and contact an authorized dealer. Do not operate the vehicle until the cause is corrected.
Engine Temperature Warning Light (red)The engine is overheating; the light comes on with a single chime when engine coolant temperature is too high.Safely pull over and stop. If the A/C is on, turn it off, shift the transmission into NEUTRAL (N) and idle. If the temperature reading does not return to normal, turn the engine off immediately and call for service.
Oil Temperature Warning Light (red)Engine oil temperature is high.If it turns on while driving, stop the vehicle and shut off the engine as soon as possible. Wait for the oil temperature to return to normal levels.
Transmission Temperature Warning Light (red)High transmission fluid temperature, which may occur with strenuous usage such as trailer towing.Stop the vehicle and run the engine at idle or slightly faster, in PARK or NEUTRAL, until the light turns off. Then you may continue to drive normally.
Brake Warning Light (red), parking brake releasedWith the fluid at the full mark, a possible brake hydraulic system malfunction or a Brake Booster problem detected by the ABS/ESC system. It also comes on when the brake fluid level is low or there is a problem with the Anti-Lock Brake System reservoir.Part of the brake system may have failed and it will take longer to stop. Have the vehicle checked immediately; if brake failure is indicated, immediate repair is necessary.

From the 2026 Jeep Compass Owner's Manual (Warning Lights And Messages: Red Warning Lights, pages 90 to 92), read October 29, 2026.

The manual warns that continuing to drive with the transmission temperature light on could cause the fluid to boil over, contact hot engine or exhaust components and cause a fire, and that continuous driving with it on will eventually cause severe transmission damage or transmission failure. If the red brake light comes on together with the ABS light, it points to an Electronic Brake Force Distribution (EBD) failure, and immediate repair to the ABS system is required.

Other red Compass warning lights

These red lights point to a fault, an open door or an unbuckled belt rather than an immediate stop, but several still call for prompt service.

Air bag

Indicates an air bag fault. It comes on for four to eight seconds as a bulb check. If it is not on during startup, stays on or turns on while driving, have the system inspected at an authorized dealer as soon as possible.

Battery charge

The 12V battery is not charging properly. If it stays on, there may be a malfunction with the battery or charging system; contact an authorized dealer as soon as possible.

Electric power steering

A fault with the Electric Power Steering system. The manual warns that continued operation with reduced assist could pose a safety risk; service should be obtained as soon as possible.

Electronic throttle control

A problem with the ETC system. Cycle the ignition when safely stopped in PARK; if the light stays on with the vehicle running, it will usually be drivable but should see an authorized dealer as soon as possible. If it keeps flashing while running, immediate service is required and the vehicle may require towing.

Transmission fault

A transmission fault, shown with a message and a buzzer. Contact an authorized dealer if the message remains after restarting the engine.

Electric park brake

The Electric Park Brake is not functioning properly and service is required. Contact an authorized dealer.

Door, hood or liftgate open

A door, the hood or the liftgate is open or not fully closed. A single chime sounds if the vehicle is moving.

Seat belt reminder

The driver or front passenger seat belt is unbuckled; the light flashes or stays on and a chime sounds.

Electronic Stability Control (ESC) Active (if equipped)Comes on during an ESC event. If it comes on continuously with the engine running, a malfunction has been detected in the ESC system; if it stays on after several ignition cycles and several miles above 30 mph, see an authorized dealer as soon as possible.
ESC OFF (if equipped)ESC is off. It is back on each time the ignition is turned to ON/RUN.
Service 4WD (if equipped)The 4WD system is not functioning properly and service is required. The manual recommends driving to the nearest service center and having the vehicle serviced immediately.
Low Coolant LevelThe vehicle coolant level is low.
Fuel Cutoff (if equipped)Lights after an accident has occurred and the system has shut the fuel off.
Fuel Level Sensor FailureA fuel level sensor failure. Take it to an authorized dealer for inspection.
Low FuelDepending on whether the tank is 13.5 gal (51 L) or 15.8 gal (60 L), it comes on when the fuel level goes below 1.5 gal (5.6 L) or 1.7 gal (6.6 L) respectively.
Service Stop/Start System (if equipped)The Stop/Start system is not functioning properly and service is required. Contact an authorized dealer for service.
Service Forward Collision Warning or Service Adaptive Cruise Control (if equipped)A fault in Forward Collision Warning, or ACC is not operating and needs service. For FCW, the manual says to contact an authorized dealer for service.
Service Active Lane Management (if equipped)Active Lane Management is not operating and requires service. See an authorized dealer.
Active Lane Management (if equipped)Solid yellow when the vehicle is approaching a lane marker; it flashes when the vehicle is crossing the lane marker.
Towing Hook Breakdown (if equipped)A failure with the tow hook. Contact an authorized dealer for service.
Low Washer Fluid (if equipped)The windshield washer fluid is low.

Compass check engine light: steady or flashing

The Engine Check/Malfunction Indicator Light (MIL) is part of the OBD II system that monitors the engine and automatic transmission control systems. It lights in ON/RUN before engine start; if it does not come on when switching from OFF to ON/RUN, have that checked promptly.

Conditions such as a loose or missing gas cap or poor quality fuel can turn it on after engine start. The 2026 Compass manual says the vehicle should be serviced if the light stays on through several typical driving styles, and that in most situations it will drive normally and will not require towing. It also cautions that prolonged driving with the MIL on could cause damage to the vehicle control system and affect fuel economy and driveability.

A MIL that flashes while the engine is running is different. The manual says it alerts serious conditions that could lead to immediate loss of power or severe catalytic converter damage, and its caution says that if the MIL is flashing, severe catalytic converter damage and power loss will soon occur and immediate service is required. A malfunctioning catalytic converter can reach higher temperatures than normal and can cause a fire if you drive slowly or park over dry plants, wood, cardboard or other flammable material.

A flash with the ignition ON and the engine not started is a separate case: in the manual's emissions readiness test, a MIL that flashes for about 10 seconds after the bulb check means the OBD II system is not ready for an inspection test.

From the 2026 Jeep Compass Owner's Manual (Engine Check/Malfunction Indicator Warning Light, page 93; Emissions Inspection And Maintenance Programs, page 97; Onboard Diagnostic System, page 97), read October 29, 2026.

Tire pressure light: steady or flashing

A steady Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) light with a message means tire pressure is lower than the recommended value and/or slow pressure loss is occurring; the display shows the indications for each affected tire. Stop and check your tires as soon as possible and inflate them to the pressure on the vehicle placard or tire inflation pressure label. The manual also says not to continue driving with one or more flat tires.

If the light flashes for about one minute and then stays on, the TPMS itself has a malfunction and may not be able to detect or signal low pressure as intended. Replacement or alternate tires or wheels are one possible cause, and the manual recommends having sensor function checked at an authorized dealer after using an aftermarket tire sealant.

From the 2026 Jeep Compass Owner's Manual (Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) Warning Light, pages 94 and 95), read October 29, 2026.

Compass indicator lights, including 4WD

These indicator lights show that a feature or mode is on. They are yellow, green, white or blue rather than red.

IndicatorWhat it shows
4WD Low (yellow, if equipped)The vehicle is in 4WD Low mode: the front and rear driveshafts are mechanically locked together and low range gives a greater gear reduction for increased torque at the wheels.
4WD Lock (yellow)The vehicle is in 4WD Lock mode, with the front and rear driveshafts mechanically locked together.
Auto HOLD! Fault (yellow, if equipped)A fault has been detected with Auto HOLD; it stays on as long as the fault condition exists.
Forward Collision Warning and FCW OFF (yellow, if equipped)Warns of a possible collision with the vehicle in front, or shows that Forward Collision Warning is off.
Auto HOLD (green, if equipped)Auto HOLD is keeping the vehicle at a complete stop without your foot on the brake pedal.
Stop/Start Active (green, if equipped)The Stop/Start function is in Autostop mode.
Sport Mode (green)Sport mode is active.
Hill Descent Control (white, if equipped)Solid when HDC is armed. HDC can only be armed in 4WD Low below 30 mph (48 km/h).
Cruise and ACC lights (white or green)Cruise control is on but not set (white), or set to a speed (green); the ACC set lights show whether a vehicle in front is detected.

From the 2026 Jeep Compass Owner's Manual (Yellow, Green, White and Blue Indicator Lights, pages 95 and 96), read October 29, 2026. Indicators depend on equipment.

Jeep Compass warning lights FAQ

Which Compass warning lights mean I should stop driving?

The 2026 Compass manual says to stop for the red oil pressure, engine temperature, oil temperature and transmission temperature lights, and to have the vehicle checked immediately if the red brake light stays on with the parking brake released.

Why is my Compass check engine light flashing?

The 2026 manual says a Malfunction Indicator Light that flashes while the engine is running alerts serious conditions that could lead to immediate loss of power or severe catalytic converter damage, and that immediate service is required.

What does the Service 4WD light mean on a Jeep Compass?

Per the 2026 manual, the 4WD system is not functioning properly and service is required. It recommends driving to the nearest service center and having the vehicle serviced immediately.

Does the oil pressure light mean my Compass is low on oil?

Not necessarily. The 2026 manual says it indicates low engine oil pressure and does not show how much oil is in the engine; the oil level must be checked under the hood. Stop, shut off the engine as soon as possible and contact an authorized dealer.

When does the Compass low fuel light come on?

The 2026 manual says that depending on whether the tank is 13.5 gal (51 L) or 15.8 gal (60 L), the light comes on when the fuel level goes below 1.5 gal (5.6 L) or 1.7 gal (6.6 L) respectively.

Why does my Compass tire pressure light flash and then stay on?

Per the 2026 manual, that sequence means the TPMS has a malfunction, so it may not detect low pressure as intended. Replacement or alternate tires or wheels are one possible cause.
