Jeep Grand Cherokee Transmission Fluid
Looking for the transmission dipstick on a 2026 Jeep Grand Cherokee? There isn't one. The 2026 Jeep Grand Cherokee Owner's Manual says the automatic transmission fluid level is preset at the factory and routine fluid level checks are not required. Here is which fluid that manual calls for, how the level gets checked, and when the fluid does get changed.

The short answer
The 2026 Jeep Grand Cherokee Owner's Manual says to use only Mopar ZF 8 & 9 Speed ATF Automatic Transmission Fluid, or equivalent, in the automatic transmission. The transmission has no dipstick: the fluid level is preset at the factory and does not require adjustment under normal operating conditions, and an authorized dealer can check it with special service tools. Routine fluid and filter changes are not required; the manual says to change the fluid and filter if the fluid becomes contaminated (with water, for example) or if the transmission is disassembled for any reason. If you notice a leak or a transmission malfunction, the manual says to visit an authorized dealer immediately to have the level checked.
What transmission fluid does a Jeep Grand Cherokee use?
The Chassis Fluids And Lubricants chart in the 2026 Jeep Grand Cherokee Owner's Manual says to use only Mopar ZF 8 & 9 Speed ATF Automatic Transmission Fluid, or equivalent, in the automatic transmission. It adds that failure to use the correct fluid may affect the function or performance of your transmission.
The maintenance section explains why it matters: it is important to use the proper transmission fluid to ensure optimum transmission performance and life, and to maintain the fluid at the correct level using the recommended fluid. Using a transmission fluid other than the manufacturer's recommended fluid may cause deterioration in transmission shift quality and/or torque converter shudder.
From the 2026 Jeep Grand Cherokee Owner's Manual (Chassis Fluids And Lubricants, page 390; Automatic Transmission: Selection Of Lubricant, page 319), read October 28, 2026. Other model years can differ; check your own manual.
Why there is no transmission dipstick
The 2026 manual says the fluid level is preset at the factory and does not require adjustment under normal operating conditions. Routine fluid level checks are not required, therefore the transmission has no dipstick. An authorized dealer can check your transmission fluid level using special service tools.
If you notice fluid leakage or a transmission malfunction, the manual says to visit an authorized dealer immediately to have the transmission fluid level checked. Operating the vehicle with an improper fluid level can cause severe transmission damage, and an authorized dealer has the proper tools to adjust the fluid level accurately.
From the 2026 Jeep Grand Cherokee Owner's Manual (Automatic Transmission: Fluid Level Check, pages 318 and 319), read October 28, 2026.
When is Grand Cherokee transmission fluid changed?
Routine fluid and filter changes are not required. The 2026 manual says to change the fluid and filter if the fluid becomes contaminated (with water, etc.), or if the transmission is disassembled for any reason.
The Maintenance Plan tables in the 2026 manual we read, for the 2.0L Hurricane-4 engine and for the 2.0L hybrid (4xe), run from 20,000 to 150,000 miles and have no separate automatic transmission fluid line. They do list transfer case fluid service, covered below. If you tow, drive off-road or have a fluid leak, ask our service advisors about your vehicle.

What not to put in the transmission
The manual is direct about this:
- No special additives. The manufacturer strongly recommends against using any special additives in the transmission. Automatic Transmission Fluid (ATF) is an engineered product and its performance may be impaired by supplemental additives, so do not add any fluid additives to the transmission.
- No sealers. Avoid using transmission sealers, as they may adversely affect seals.
- No chemical flushes. Do not use chemical flushes in your transmission, as the chemicals can damage your transmission components. The manual adds that such damage is not covered by the New Vehicle Limited Warranty, and that only the approved lubricant should be used.

Transmission temperature light and towing
If your Grand Cherokee is equipped with a Transmission Temperature Warning Light, it warns of a high transmission fluid temperature, which may occur with strenuous usage such as trailer towing. If it turns on, the manual says to stop the vehicle and run the engine at idle or slightly faster, with the transmission in PARK (P) or NEUTRAL (N), until the light turns off. Then you may continue to drive normally. Continuous driving with the light on will eventually cause severe transmission damage or transmission failure, and the manual warns that continuing to operate the vehicle with the light on could cause the fluid to boil over, come in contact with hot engine or exhaust components and cause a fire.
For towing, the manual's Towing Tips say to select the DRIVE (D) range. The transmission controls include a drive strategy to avoid frequent shifting when towing; if frequent shifting does occur in DRIVE, you can use the AutoStick shift control to manually select a lower gear. The manual notes that using a lower gear under heavy loading conditions will improve performance and extend transmission life by reducing excessive shifting and heat buildup, and will also provide better engine braking.

Transfer case fluid is separate
On the 2026 Grand Cherokee, four-wheel-drive models have a transfer case with its own fluid and its own service intervals in the Maintenance Plan.
| Item | What the 2026 manual says |
|---|---|
| Fluid | Mopar ATF+4 Automatic Transmission Fluid is recommended for the 1-speed or 2-speed transfer case. |
| Change, normal usage | At 120,000 miles (12 years) in the Maintenance Plan, for both the 2.0L Hurricane-4 and the 2.0L hybrid. |
| Change, severe usage | At 70,000 and 140,000 miles (7 and 14 years) for police, taxi, fleet, off-road or frequent trailer towing use. |
| Inspection | The Maintenance Plan lists inspecting the transfer case fluid at 30,000, 60,000, 90,000, 120,000 and 150,000 miles, for both engines. Separately, the Transfer Case section says that for normal service, periodic fluid level checks are not required; the exterior of the transfer case should be inspected when the vehicle is serviced for other reasons, and the fluid level checked if oil leakage is suspected. |
