Jeep Wrangler Oil Type and Capacity by Engine

The right oil for a Jeep Wrangler depends on the engine. Here is the oil grade, the Mopar material standard, the API symbol and the capacity with filter for each 2026 Wrangler engine, plus how to check the level and what the manual says to avoid, from the 2026 Jeep Wrangler Owner's Manual.

The short answer

The 2026 Wrangler manual recommends Mopar full synthetic oil for every engine: SAE 5W-30 meeting MS-13340 for the 2.0L, SAE 0W-20 meeting MS-6395 for the 3.6L, and SAE 0W-40 meeting MS-A0921 for the 6.4L. Oil capacity with filter is 5 quarts for the 2.0L and 3.6L and 7.5 quarts for the 6.4L. Equivalent full synthetic oils of the same grade can be used if they carry the API trademark the manual lists.

EngineRecommended oilCapacity with filter
2.0LMopar API SP/GF-6A Certified SAE 5W-30 Full Synthetic Engine Oil meeting Material Standard MS-13340. Equivalent full synthetic 5W-30 API SP oil can be used but must have the API trademark the manual lists for this engine.5 qt (4.73 L)
3.6LMopar SAE 0W-20 Full Synthetic Engine Oil meeting Material Standard MS-6395. Equivalent full synthetic SAE 0W-20 oil can be used but must have the API Starburst trademark.5 qt (4.73 L)
6.4LMopar API Certified SAE 0W-40 Full Synthetic Engine Oil meeting Material Standard MS-A0921. Equivalent full synthetic SAE 0W-40 oil can be used but must have the API Donut trademark.7.5 qt (7.1 L)

From the 2026 Jeep Wrangler Owner's Manual (Technical Specifications: Engine Fluid And Lubricants; Fluid Capacities), read October 27, 2026. The 4xe uses the 2.0L engine.

For the 2.0L, the manual adds a caution: failure to use the recommended API SP/GF-6A or equivalent oil can cause engine damage not covered by the vehicle warranty. It also says the oil installed at the factory is a high-quality energy conserving lubricant, and that oil changes should be consistent with the climate conditions you expect to drive in.

What the API symbols on the bottle mean

The manual says the manufacturer only recommends API trademark oils. The API Starburst trademark certifies 0W-20, 0W-30 and 5W-30 engine oils, and the API Donut trademark certifies 0W-40 and 5W-40 engine oils.

Synthetic engine oils that do not have both the correct API trademark and the correct SAE viscosity grade numbers should not be used.

From the 2026 Jeep Wrangler Owner's Manual (Engine Oil: American Petroleum Institute (API) Approved Engine Oil; Engine Oil Filter), read October 27, 2026.

How to check the oil level on a Wrangler

Check the oil level at regular intervals, such as every fuel stop. The best time is about five minutes after a fully warmed-up engine is shut off, with the vehicle on level ground for the most accurate reading.

  1. Pull the engine oil dipstick and read the level. The dipstick has a crosshatched zone, which may be marked SAFE, MIN and MAX, or with dimples at the MIN and MAX ends.
  2. Keep the level within the crosshatch markings.
  3. Adding 1 qt (1 L) of oil when the reading is at the low end of the range raises the level to the high end.
  4. Use care when filling, and wipe up any oil spilled on top of the engine with an absorbent cloth or remove it with compressed air.

For the 6.4L, the manual says to check engine oil with every refueling and add if necessary, because oil and fuel consumption may be higher through the first oil change interval, and running the engine with the level below the add mark can cause severe engine damage.

From the 2026 Jeep Wrangler Owner's Manual (Checking Oil Level; Engine Break-In Recommendations, 6.4L Engine), read October 27, 2026.

What the manual says to avoid

Non-detergent oil

Never use non-detergent oil or straight mineral oil in the engine, or damage may result.

Chemical flushes

Do not use chemical flushes in your engine oil; the chemicals can damage the engine, and that damage is not covered by the New Vehicle Limited Warranty.

Additives

The manufacturer strongly recommends against adding any additives (other than leak detection dyes) to the engine oil, because its performance may be impaired by supplemental additives.

Wrong grade

Do not use synthetic oils without both the correct API trademark and the correct SAE viscosity grade.

From the 2026 Jeep Wrangler Owner's Manual (Engine Oil; Materials Added To Engine Oil; Engine Break-In Recommendations), read October 27, 2026.

Engine oil filter

The manual says to replace the engine oil filter with a new one at every oil change, using a full-flow disposable filter. It recommends a Mopar Engine Oil Filter, prefers bproauto filters as an alternative, and otherwise says to use only filters that meet or exceed SAE/USCAR-36 Filter Performance Requirements.

When the cluster shows "Oil Change Required," the manual says to have the vehicle serviced as soon as possible, within the next 500 miles, and to change the oil if it has been six months since the last change even if the message has not come on.

From the 2026 Jeep Wrangler Owner's Manual (Engine Oil Filter; Scheduled Servicing), read October 27, 2026. Severe-duty use (dusty or off-road driving, mostly idling or very low engine RPM) calls for more frequent changes; see your manual's maintenance plan.
