Jeep Wrangler Sway Bar Disconnect: How and When to Use It
Some Wranglers have an electronic front sway bar disconnect, worked by a SWAY BAR switch on the instrument panel. Disconnecting the bar lets the front suspension travel farther on rough trails. Here is how to use it, why it reconnects at speed, what the indicator light is telling you, and what to do when the bar will not move, from the 2026 Jeep Wrangler Owner's Manual.

The short answer
To disconnect the sway bar on an equipped Wrangler, shift into 4H or 4L and push the SWAY BAR switch on the instrument panel. The Sway Bar Indicator Light flashes while the bar disconnects and stays on once it is disconnected. Push the switch again to return to on-road mode. Reconnect the bar before driving on hard-surfaced roads or above 18 mph; the system itself tries to reconnect it above 18 mph. If the light keeps flashing, the bar may be torque locked: drive onto level ground or rock the vehicle side to side.
What the Wrangler sway bar disconnect does
The front stabilizer bar, or sway bar, links the left and right sides of the front suspension. Under certain circumstances it enhances vehicle stability and assists with vehicle control. On a Wrangler equipped with the electronic disconnecting stabilizer/sway bar, you can disconnect it to allow greater front suspension travel in off-road situations.
The system is controlled by the SWAY BAR switch on the instrument panel. The bar should stay in on-road mode during normal driving conditions.

How to disconnect the sway bar on a Jeep Wrangler
Use the disconnect on the trail, at low speed:
- Shift the transfer case into 4H or 4L.
- Push the SWAY BAR switch on the instrument panel to obtain the off-road position.
- Watch the Sway Bar Indicator Light in the instrument cluster. It flashes until the bar has been fully disconnected, then stays on while the bar is disconnected.
- To return to on-road mode, push the SWAY BAR switch again.
The indicator also flashes when activation conditions are not met, for example if the transfer case is not in 4H or 4L.

Reconnecting the bar, and the 18 mph rule
The manual warns that a disconnected sway bar may contribute to loss of vehicle control. Make sure the bar is reconnected before driving on hard-surfaced roads or at speeds above 18 mph (29 km/h).
The system monitors vehicle speed. Above 18 mph (29 km/h) it will attempt to reconnect the bar, shown by a flashing or solid Sway Bar Indicator Light. Once speed drops below 14 mph (22 km/h), it will attempt to return to off-road mode. That automatic step is a backup, not a substitute for pushing the switch to return to on-road mode before you leave the trail.

When the sway bar will not disconnect or reconnect
The bar can be torque locked because of left and right suspension height differences, from the driving surface or from how the vehicle is loaded. For the bar to disconnect or reconnect, its right and left halves must line up.
- Drive the vehicle onto level ground, or rock it gently from side to side, so the two halves of the bar can align.
- Push the SWAY BAR switch again if needed and watch the indicator light.
- If the bar will not return to on-road mode, the Sway Bar Indicator Light keeps flashing and vehicle stability may be reduced. Do not drive faster than 18 mph (29 km/h) until it reconnects.
If the Sway Bar Fault Warning Light comes on, there is a fault in the sway bar disconnect system. Have it checked by our service department.

Wrangler sway bar indicator lights
| What you see | What it means | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Sway Bar Indicator Light on (solid) | The front sway bar is disconnected. | Stay at low speed off-road. Push the SWAY BAR switch to reconnect before hard-surfaced roads or speeds above 18 mph. |
| Sway Bar Indicator Light flashing | The bar is changing position, activation conditions are not met, or the system is trying to reconnect at speed. | Check that you are in 4H or 4L. If it keeps flashing, the bar may be torque locked: level ground or a gentle side-to-side rock helps it align. Stay at or below 18 mph until it reconnects. |
| Sway Bar Fault Warning Light | A fault in the sway bar disconnect system. | Schedule service. |

Other Wrangler trail features you may use with it
4WD Low (4L)
The sway bar disconnects in 4H or 4L. Low range is for slow, demanding terrain; the Jeep 4x4 systems page explains the hardware.
Axle lockers, if equipped
Tru-Lok axle locks use their own AXLE LOCK switch on the instrument panel. In 4L, the manual lists ignition in RUN, a speed of 10 mph or less, and both wheels on the axle turning at the same speed.
Off Road+, if equipped
Pushing the OFF ROAD+ switch in the switch bank changes how the vehicle behaves depending on which 4WD mode is active.
Stop/Start off
The manual recommends disabling Engine Stop/Start during off-road use, if your Wrangler has it.

Jeep Wrangler sway bar disconnect FAQ
How do I disconnect the sway bar on my Jeep Wrangler?
Shift into 4H or 4L and push the SWAY BAR switch on the instrument panel. The Sway Bar Indicator Light flashes until the bar is fully disconnected, then stays on.
Can I drive on the road with the sway bar disconnected?
No. The 2026 Jeep Wrangler Owner's Manual says to make sure the bar is reconnected before driving on hard-surfaced roads or at speeds above 18 mph, because a disconnected bar may contribute to loss of vehicle control.
Does the Wrangler reconnect the sway bar automatically?
It tries to. Above 18 mph the system attempts to reconnect the bar, and below 14 mph it attempts to return to off-road mode. Push the switch to return to on-road mode before you leave the trail.
Why is my Wrangler sway bar light flashing?
The light flashes while the bar is changing position, when activation conditions are not met (for example, not in 4H or 4L), or while the system tries to reconnect at speed. A bar that stays flashing may be torque locked.
What does it mean when the sway bar is torque locked?
Left and right suspension height differences, from the ground or the load, keep the two halves of the bar from lining up. Drive onto level ground or rock the vehicle side to side so it can disconnect or reconnect.
Does every Wrangler have a sway bar disconnect?
No. The manual describes it as an if-equipped feature. Look for a SWAY BAR switch on your instrument panel.
Can Elgin CDJR check a sway bar fault?
Yes. If the Sway Bar Fault Warning Light is on, schedule service with our Jeep technicians in Streamwood.
Sway bar light that will not go out?
