Jeep Wrangler Coolant Guide

The 2026 Jeep Wrangler Owner's Manual recommends one type of coolant (antifreeze) for every Wrangler cooling system its fluids chart lists: OAT coolant that meets the manufacturer Material Standard MS.90032. Here is what that manual says about the coolant to use, how much each system holds, how to check the level, when it gets replaced and what not to mix in.

The short answer

For the engine, intercooler and hybrid battery and power electronics coolant, the 2026 Jeep Wrangler Owner's Manual recommends Mopar Antifreeze/Coolant 10 Year/150,000 Mile Formula OAT (Organic Additive Technology), or an equivalent meeting Material Standard MS.90032. It says this coolant can be used up to 10 years or 150,000 miles before replacement, and that you should use the same coolant throughout the life of the vehicle. For engine coolant, mix a minimum of 50% OAT coolant with distilled water, do not mix in HOAT or "globally compatible" coolant, and never open the cooling system when it is hot.

What coolant does a Jeep Wrangler use?

The 2026 manual's fluids chart lists the same OAT coolant for each Wrangler cooling system. The intercooler and hybrid systems apply only to the engines that have them.

SystemCoolant the 2026 manual recommends
Engine coolantWe recommend using Mopar Antifreeze/Coolant 10 Year/150,000 Mile (240,000 km) Formula OAT (Organic Additive Technology) or equivalent meeting the requirements of the manufacturer Material Standard MS.90032.
Intercooler (if equipped)We recommend using Mopar Antifreeze/Coolant 10 Year/150,000 Mile (240,000 km) Formula OAT (Organic Additive Technology) or equivalent meeting the requirements of the manufacturer Material Standard MS.90032.
Battery and power electric coolant (4xe hybrid)We recommend using Mopar Antifreeze/Coolant 10 Year/150,000 Mile (240,000 km) Formula OAT (Organic Additive Technology) or equivalent meeting the requirements of the manufacturer Material Standard MS.90032.

From the 2026 Jeep Wrangler Owner's Manual (Fluids And Lubricants, pages 349 and 350), read October 28, 2026. Other model years can differ; check your own manual.

The same chart cautions that OAT coolant is different from Hybrid Organic Additive Technology (HOAT) coolant and should not be mixed with HOAT or any "globally compatible" coolant. It also says not to use water alone or alcohol-based coolant products, not to use additional rust inhibitors or antirust products, which may plug the radiator, and that the vehicle has not been designed for propylene glycol-based coolant.

How to check Wrangler coolant level

The 2026 manual says the coolant bottle gives a quick visual check. With the engine OFF and cold, the coolant level in the bottle should be between the ranges indicated on the bottle. As long as the engine operating temperature is satisfactory, the coolant bottle need only be checked once a month. The radiator normally remains completely full, so there is no need to remove the radiator/coolant pressure cap unless checking the coolant freeze point or replacing coolant.

On the 2.0L engine, the bottle cap has a level dipstick. With the engine OFF and cold, the manual's steps are: remove the cap with the level dipstick from the coolant bottle; clean the coolant off the dipstick; rest the cap on the opening of the bottle without tightening it; then remove the cap and check the level on the dipstick. It should be within the OK range between ADD and FULL.

When additional coolant is needed to keep the proper level, the manual says only OAT coolant meeting MS.90032 should be added to the coolant bottle, and not to overfill it. Never add coolant when the engine is overheated, and do not loosen or remove the pressure cap while the system is hot or under pressure.

From the 2026 Jeep Wrangler Owner's Manual (Cooling System: Coolant Level; Engine Coolant Level — 2.0L, page 299), read October 28, 2026.

Mixing and adding Wrangler coolant

The 2026 manual's rules for adding coolant:

  • Mix ratio. Mix a minimum solution of 50% OAT coolant meeting MS.90032 and distilled water. Use higher concentrations, not to exceed 70%, if temperatures below −34°F (−37°C) are anticipated, and contact an authorized dealer for assistance.
  • Water. Use only high purity water, such as distilled or deionized water. Lower quality water reduces corrosion protection.
  • Do not mix coolant types. Mixing coolant types is not recommended and can damage the cooling system. If HOAT and OAT coolant are mixed in an emergency, have an authorized dealer drain, flush and refill with OAT coolant as soon as possible.
  • Same coolant for life. To keep the extended maintenance period, use the same OAT coolant throughout the life of the vehicle.
  • Special tools. Some vehicles require special tools to add coolant properly, and filling those systems wrong could lead to severe internal engine damage. The manual says to contact an authorized dealer if any coolant needs to be added to the system.

It also reminds owners that keeping the right level of freeze protection for local temperatures is the owner's responsibility, which matters for Chicago-area winters.

When to replace Wrangler coolant

ItemWhat the 2026 manual says
Coolant lifeThe factory OAT coolant can be used up to 10 years or 150,000 miles (240,000 km) before replacement.
Maintenance Plan, 2.0L gas, hybrid and 3.6L gasFlush and replace the engine, intercooler (if equipped), power electronics (if equipped) and battery (if equipped) coolant at 10 years or 150,000 miles (240,000 km), whichever comes first.
Maintenance Plan, 6.4L gasFlush and replace the engine coolant at 120 months if not done at 150,000 miles (240,000 km).
Every 12 monthsCheck the coolant (antifreeze) protection before the onset of freezing weather, where applicable. If the coolant is dirty or rusty in appearance, have the system drained, flushed and refilled with fresh OAT coolant by an authorized dealer.
At every oil change (2.0L, hybrid, 3.6L plan)Inspect engine cooling system protection and hoses.
Once a month or before a long tripCheck the fluid level of the coolant reservoir and fill as needed.

From the 2026 Jeep Wrangler Owner's Manual (Adding Coolant, page 298; Coolant Checks, page 297; Maintenance Plan, pages 275 to 277 and 282), read October 28, 2026. The Maintenance Plans run by mileage or time, whichever comes first.

Wrangler 4xe battery and electric coolant

On models with the hybrid system, the 2026 manual says the electric and battery coolant systems must be serviced by an authorized dealer. If the coolant level is below what is specified on the reservoir, contact an authorized dealer for service.

These systems require high purity water, such as deionized or distilled water, when mixing the coolant solution. If the battery coolant level is low, the manual says the Hybrid Electric Vehicle System Service Light will be illuminated on the instrument cluster.

From the 2026 Jeep Wrangler Owner's Manual (Electric/Battery Coolant System — Hybrid, pages 297 and 298), read October 28, 2026.

If your Wrangler overheats

The 2026 manual lists these potential signs of overheating: the temperature gauge is at HOT (H), a strong smell of coolant, white smoke coming from the engine or exhaust, and bubbles in the coolant in the coolant bottle. It says an overheating vehicle will need to be serviced by an authorized dealer.

If the temperature gauge is moving towards or close to HOT (H), the manual says you can reduce the potential for overheating: on highways, slow down; in city traffic, while stopped, place the transmission in NEUTRAL (N), but do not increase the engine idle speed while preventing vehicle motion with the brakes; turn the A/C off, since it adds heat to the engine cooling system; and turn the temperature control to maximum heat with the blower on high, so the heater core acts as a supplement to the radiator.

If the gauge reads HOT (H), pull over and stop, and idle the vehicle with the A/C turned off until the pointer drops back into the normal range. If the pointer remains on HOT (H) and you hear continuous chimes, turn the engine off immediately and call for service. Never try to open a cooling system pressure cap when the radiator or coolant bottle is hot: you or others can be badly burned by hot coolant or steam.
