How to Remove a Jeep Wrangler Hard Top
The Wrangler hard top comes off in two stages: first the Freedom Top front panels over the front seats, then the rear hard top itself. The 2026 Jeep Wrangler Owner's Manual says its hard top removal and installation instructions apply to both two-door and four-door models. Here are the steps from that manual, the tools it calls for, and what it says about storing the panels and putting everything back.

The short answer
Take off the Freedom Top front panels first: fold down the sun visors, turn the three L-shaped locks on the left panel, unlatch its header latch at the top of the windshield and lift it off, then repeat on the right. For the rear hard top, open both front doors, remove the two Torx head screws at the B-pillars and the six along the interior bodyside with the provided #50 Torx head driver, open the swing gate and lift the rear glass, disconnect and stow the wiring harness and washer hose in the left rear corner, close the glass and swing gate, then lift the top off with four adults, one at each corner. The 2026 Jeep Wrangler Owner's Manual says to set it on a soft surface.
Before you take the top off
The 2026 Wrangler manual lists a few cautions that apply to the whole job. Most are about keeping water out of the cabin once the top goes back on:
- Start dry. It is recommended that the top be free of water before panel removal. Removing the top, opening a door or lowering a window while the top is wet may allow water to drip into the interior.
- Fully on or fully off. Do not move the vehicle until the top has been either fully attached to the front header, sport bar and body side, or fully removed.
- No loads on the top. The hard top is not designed to carry any additional loads, such as aftermarket roof racks, spare tires, building materials, or hunting or camping supplies. For optional Mopar accessory roof racks, the manual points to its Roof Luggage Rack section.
- Handle the seals with care. Careless handling and storage of the removable roof panels may damage the seals and cause water leaks, and the hard top and front panels must be positioned properly to seal.
From the 2026 Jeep Wrangler Owner's Manual (Hard Top Front Panel(s) Removal cautions, page 98), read October 29, 2026. Other model years can differ; check your own manual.
Step 1: Remove the Freedom Top front panels
The hard top has a left and a right front panel above the front seats. The manual says the left side panel must be removed before the right side panel. To remove them:
- Fold down the sun visor against the windshield.
- Turn the three L-shaped locks on the left side panel (one at the front, the rear, and outside), unlocking them from the roof.
- Unlatch the left side header panel latch located at the top of the windshield.
- Remove the left side panel.
- Repeat the previous steps to remove the right side panel.
If you only want open air over the front seats, you can stop here. The manual also describes an available Sunrider for Hard Top, a soft top that can be used in place of the Hard Top Freedom Panels for quick and easy opening of the area above the driver and front passenger seats; it warns not to open or close the Sunrider top while driving.
From the 2026 Jeep Wrangler Owner's Manual (Hard Top Front Panel(s) Removal, pages 100 and 101; Sunrider For Hard Top, page 104), read October 29, 2026.
Storing the panels in the Freedom Top bag
If your Wrangler has the hard top panel storage bag (if equipped), the manual says it has two compartments and can be secured to the back of the rear seat:
- Lay the bag down so the loops and hooks face upward. Unzip it and fold back the outer flap.
- Make sure each front panel latch is closed before inserting the panel into the bag.
- Insert the left side panel with the latches facing upward.
- Unfold the black panel divider and make sure it lies flat.
- Insert the right side panel with the latches facing downward.
- Unfold the outer flap and zip the bag closed.
- Lift the bag into the vehicle with the hooks and straps facing the back of the rear seat, and attach the clip at the bottom of the bag to the child restraint anchorage at the base of the rear seat.
- Wrap the upper strap around the rear head restraints, loop it through the buckle and pull the strap to tighten the bag securely against the rear seat.
From the 2026 Jeep Wrangler Owner's Manual (Hard Top Panel(s) Storage Bag — If Equipped, page 101), read October 29, 2026.
Step 2: Remove the rear hard top
The rear hard top is held by Torx head screws and connected to the vehicle by a wiring harness and a washer hose at the left rear corner. The manual's steps, using the #50 Torx head driver and ratchet provided with the vehicle:
- Remove both front panels (Step 1).
- Open both front doors.
- Remove the two Torx head screws that secure the hard top at the B-pillar, near the top of the front doors.
- Remove the six Torx head screws that secure the hard top along the interior bodyside, three screws on each side.
- Open the swing gate all the way to make sure the rear window glass clears, then lift the rear window glass.
- Locate the wire harness and washer hose on the left rear inside corner of the vehicle.
- Release the locking tab by pushing it downward.
- Remove the wiring harness: push the tab inward while pulling downward to disconnect it.
- Remove the washer hose: push the release button on the hose connector and pull downward.
- Store the wire harness and washer hose in the compartment below the trim; lift the trim cover to reach it.
- Secure the wire harness in the compartment by plugging it into the receptacle and re-engaging the locking tab.
- Secure the washer hose by snapping it in next to the receptacle, then replace the compartment cover.
- Lower the rear window and close the swing gate.
- Remove the hard top from the vehicle and place it on a soft surface to prevent damage.
Get help for the lift. The manual cautions that removal of the rear hard top requires four adults, one located on each corner, and that not following this caution could damage the hard top. Keep the screws together so they are ready for reinstallation.

Putting the hard top and panels back on
Rear hard top. If the door frames are installed from soft top use, the manual says they must be removed before the hard top goes on (its door frame removal steps are on page 31). Place the hard top on the vehicle, make sure it sits flush with the body at the sides and that there is a uniform gap between the lift glass and the hard top, then follow the removal steps in reverse order. Inspect the hard top seals for damage and replace them if necessary.
Front panels. Open the header latch inside the vehicle and the three L-shaped locks on each panel. Set the right side panel on the windshield frame with the locating pin in the front receiver mounting hole, followed by the left side panel, making sure there is no overhang and the panels sit flush with the body. Then reinstall the panels using the removal steps in reverse order.
To prevent water leaks, the manual says the seals and hard top panels should be clear of any dust and debris before reinstallation.

Hard top torque specs
When the hard top goes back on, the manual says the Torx fasteners that attach it to the body should be torqued as follows, using the provided #50 Torx head driver and ratchet:
| Fastener | Torque (2026 manual) |
|---|---|
| Hard top to B-pillar | 119 in-lb +/- 23 in-lb (13.5 N·m +/- 2.7 N·m) |
| Hard top to J-rail | 154 in-lb +/- 30 in-lb (17.5 N·m +/- 3.5 N·m) |
From the 2026 Jeep Wrangler Owner's Manual (Installing The Hard Top, page 104), read October 29, 2026. Those values are in inch-pounds, not foot-pounds.
Taking the doors off too? See our guide to taking the doors off a Wrangler. The manual warns not to drive on public roads with the doors or the door frames removed, as you lose the protection they can provide; it describes those procedures for off-road operation only.
