Jeep Wrangler Transmission Fluid
Which transmission fluid a Jeep Wrangler takes depends on its transmission. The 2026 Jeep Wrangler Owner's Manual lists two automatic transmissions with different fluids, plus a manual transmission and a transfer case that both call for Mopar ATF+4. Here is what that manual says about each one: the fluid, how the level is checked, and when it gets changed.

The short answer
The Chassis Fluids And Lubricants chart in the 2026 Jeep Wrangler Owner's Manual says to use only Mopar ZF 8 & 9 Speed Automatic Transmission Fluid (ATF), or equivalent, in the 850RE automatic transmission, and only Mopar ATF 818, or equivalent, in the 8HP80PH automatic. For the manual transmission and the transfer case it recommends Mopar ATF+4. The automatic transmission has no dipstick: the level is preset at the factory and an authorized dealer checks it with special service tools. Routine automatic transmission fluid and filter changes are not required unless the fluid becomes contaminated or the transmission is disassembled. The Maintenance Plan does list manual transmission fluid changes for severe use, and transfer case fluid inspections and changes.
What transmission fluid does a Jeep Wrangler use?
The 2026 manual's Chassis Fluids And Lubricants chart lists one fluid for each unit. Check which transmission your Wrangler has before buying fluid, or ask our service advisors.
| Component | Fluid the 2026 manual calls for |

From the 2026 Jeep Wrangler Owner's Manual (Chassis Fluids And Lubricants, page 351; Automatic Transmission: Selection Of Lubricant, page 302), read October 28, 2026. Other model years can differ; check your own manual.
For the automatic transmission, the manual explains why it matters: use the proper transmission fluid to ensure optimum transmission performance and life, and keep it at the correct level with the recommended fluid. Using a transmission fluid other than the manufacturer recommended fluid may cause deterioration in transmission shift quality and/or torque converter shudder.
Automatic transmission: why there is no dipstick
For the automatic transmission, the 2026 manual says the fluid level is preset at the factory and does not require adjustment under normal operating conditions. Routine fluid level checks are not required, therefore the transmission has no dipstick. An authorized dealer can check your transmission fluid level using special service tools.
If you notice fluid leakage or a transmission malfunction, the manual says to visit an authorized dealer immediately to have the transmission fluid level checked. Operating the vehicle with an improper fluid level can cause severe transmission damage, and an authorized dealer has the proper tools to adjust the fluid level accurately.
On changes, the manual says that under normal operating conditions the fluid installed at the factory will provide satisfactory lubrication for the life of the vehicle, and routine fluid and filter changes are not required. Change the fluid and filter if the fluid becomes contaminated (with water, etc.), or if the transmission is disassembled for any reason.
From the 2026 Jeep Wrangler Owner's Manual (Automatic Transmission: Fluid Level Check; Fluid And Filter Changes; Selection Of Lubricant, pages 301 and 302), read October 28, 2026.
What not to put in the automatic transmission
The 2026 manual is direct about this:
- No special additives. It strongly recommends against using any special additives in the transmission. Automatic Transmission Fluid (ATF) is an engineered product and its performance may be impaired by supplemental additives, so do not add any fluid additives to the transmission.
- No sealers. Avoid using transmission sealers, as they may adversely affect seals.
- No chemical flushes. Do not use chemical flushes in your transmission, as the chemicals can damage your transmission components; the manual adds that such damage is not covered by the New Vehicle Limited Warranty, and that only the approved lubricant should be used in any transmission.
From the 2026 Jeep Wrangler Owner's Manual (Automatic Transmission: Special Additives; Selection Of Lubricant, pages 301 and 302), read October 28, 2026.
Manual transmission and transfer case fluid checks
The manual transmission is different: it does have a level check. The 2026 manual says to check the fluid level by removing the fill plug; the level should be between the bottom of the fill hole and a point not more than 3/16 of an inch (4.76 mm) below the bottom of the hole, and to add fluid if necessary to maintain the proper level. Under normal operating conditions, it says the fluid installed at the factory will give satisfactory lubrication for the life of the vehicle; if the fluid becomes contaminated with water, it should be changed immediately, and otherwise changed as recommended in the Maintenance Plan. Use only the manufacturer recommended manual transmission fluid.
For the transfer case, the 2026 manual says the fluid level should be to the bottom edge of the fill hole when the vehicle is in a level position. For drain and refill, it refers you to the Maintenance Plan for the proper intervals (see the table below).

Transmission and transfer case items in the Maintenance Plan
The 2026 manual has a Maintenance Plan for the 2.0L gas, hybrid and 3.6L gas models, and a separate one for the 6.4L. Neither plan has a routine automatic transmission fluid change line. These are the transmission and transfer case items they do list.
| Item | When the 2026 Maintenance Plan lists it |
|---|---|
| Inspect transfer case fluid (2.0L, hybrid, 3.6L) | At 30,000, 90,000 and 150,000 miles (3, 9 and 15 years). |
| Change transfer case fluid, severe use (2.0L, hybrid, 3.6L) | At 60,000 and 120,000 miles (6 and 12 years) if you use the vehicle for police, taxi, fleet or frequent trailer towing. |
| Change manual transmission fluid, severe use (2.0L, hybrid, 3.6L) | At 30,000, 60,000, 90,000, 120,000 and 150,000 miles if you use the vehicle for trailer towing, snow plowing, heavy loading, taxi, police, delivery service (commercial service), off-road, desert operation, or more than 50% of your driving is at sustained high speeds during hot weather, above 90°F. |
| Drain the transfer case and refill (6.4L) | At 30,000, 60,000, 90,000, 120,000 and 150,000 miles. |
From the 2026 Jeep Wrangler Owner's Manual (Maintenance Plan — 2.0L Gas, Hybrid and 3.6L Gas, pages 275 to 278; Maintenance Plan — 6.4L Gas, pages 279 to 281), read October 28, 2026. The plans run by mileage or time, whichever comes first.
Transmission temperature light and towing
The 2026 Wrangler's Transmission Temperature Warning Light warns of a high transmission fluid temperature, which may occur with strenuous usage such as trailer towing. If it turns on, the manual says to stop the vehicle and run the engine at idle or slightly faster, with the transmission in PARK (P) or NEUTRAL (N), until the light turns off; then you may continue to drive normally. Continuous driving with the light on will eventually cause severe transmission damage or failure, and the fluid could boil over, contact hot engine or exhaust components and cause a fire. The manual also warns that continuing to drive with the "CLUTCH HOT" message displayed, or with the temperature light on, could overheat the clutch and cause a fire, or cause severe clutch damage, transmission damage or failure.
For towing with an automatic, the manual's Towing Tips say to select the DRIVE range; the transmission controls include a drive strategy to avoid frequent shifting when towing, and if frequent shifting does occur you can use the AutoStick shift control to select a lower gear. Using a lower gear under heavy loading conditions will improve performance and extend transmission life by reducing excessive shifting and heat buildup. With a manual transmission, all starts while towing must be in FIRST gear to avoid excessive clutch slippage.
