Jeep Wrangler Differential Fluid Guide
Your Wrangler's front and rear axles each have a differential that runs in gear oil. Here is what the 2026 Jeep Wrangler Owner's Manual says about the lubricant each axle takes, how the level is checked, and when the axle fluid is inspected or changed on the 2.0L, 4xe hybrid, 3.6L and 6.4L.

The short answer
For the front axle differential, the 2026 Jeep Wrangler Owner's Manual recommends Mopar Gear & Axle Lubricant SAE 75W85 (API GL-5). For the rear axle, it recommends SAE 75W140 (API GL-5) for the M200 axle (sales code DRZ) and SAE 75W85 (API GL-5) for the M220 axle (sales codes DRE/DRF), and models with the Trac-Lok limited slip differential require a friction modifier additive. For normal service, periodic axle fluid level checks are not required; the Maintenance Plan has the axle fluid inspected at set intervals and changed only if you use the Wrangler for police, taxi, fleet, off-road or frequent trailer towing (on the 6.4L, also sustained high speed driving).
Which differential fluid a 2026 Wrangler takes
The manual's Chassis Fluids And Lubricants chart lists one lubricant for the front axle and two for the rear, depending on which rear axle the Wrangler has:
| Component | What the 2026 manual recommends |
|---|---|
| Front axle differential | Mopar Gear & Axle Lubricant (SAE 75W85) (API GL-5). |
| Rear axle differential, M200 (sales code DRZ) | Mopar Gear & Axle Lubricant (SAE 75W140) (API GL-5). |
| Rear axle differential, M220 (sales codes DRE/DRF) | Mopar Gear & Axle Lubricant (SAE 75W85) (API GL-5). Models equipped with Trac-Lok Limited Slip Differential require a friction modifier additive. |
| Transfer case (for comparison) | Mopar ATF+4 Automatic Transmission Fluid. The transfer case has its own fluid, separate from the axles. |
From the 2026 Jeep Wrangler Owner's Manual (Chassis Fluids And Lubricants, page 351), read October 29, 2026. Other model years can differ; check your own manual.
If you are not sure which rear axle your Wrangler has, ask our service department before adding or changing gear oil.
How the axle fluid level is checked
The 2026 manual says that for normal service, periodic fluid level checks are not required. When the vehicle is serviced for other reasons, the exterior surfaces of the axle assembly should be inspected, and if gear oil leakage is suspected, the fluid level should be inspected.
The level is checked at the axle's fill hole. Per the manual, the lubricant should be approximately 1/8 inch (3 mm) below the bottom edge of the oil fill hole, with the vehicle level and supported by the axles. Add lubricant only at the fill hole and only to the level specified.
From the 2026 Jeep Wrangler Owner's Manual (Front/Rear Axle Fluid: Fluid Level Check; Adding Fluid, page 300), read October 29, 2026.
When the Maintenance Plan inspects or changes axle fluid
The 2026 manual has one Maintenance Plan for the 2.0L gas, hybrid and 3.6L gas engines and a separate one for the 6.4L. Both run by mileage or time, whichever comes first:
| Engine | Inspect the front and rear axle fluid | Change the front and rear axle fluid |
|---|---|---|
| 2.0L gas, 2.0L hybrid (4xe) and 3.6L gas | 20,000, 60,000, 100,000 and 140,000 miles (or 2, 6, 10 and 14 years) | At 40,000, 80,000 and 120,000 miles (or 4, 8 and 12 years) if you use the vehicle for police, taxi, fleet, off-road or frequent trailer towing. |
| 6.4L gas | Every 24,000 miles or 24 months: 24,000, 48,000, 72,000, 96,000, 120,000 and 144,000 miles | At those same intervals if you use the vehicle for any of the following: police, taxi, fleet, sustained high speed driving, off-road or frequent trailer towing. |
From the 2026 Jeep Wrangler Owner's Manual (Maintenance Plan — 2.0L Gas, Hybrid and 3.6L Gas, pages 276 and 278; Maintenance Plan — 6.4L Gas, page 281), read October 29, 2026.
Outside those uses, the plans list axle fluid inspections only, not routine changes. The same plans also inspect the CV/universal joints and, on the 2.0L, hybrid and 3.6L, inspect the transfer case fluid.
Leaks and off-road use
Because the 2026 manual ties a level check to suspected gear oil leakage, look for wet or oily spots on the axle housings or on the ground under the front or rear axle. If you see them, have the level inspected.
If your Wrangler sees off-road use or frequent trailer towing, the Maintenance Plans above add axle fluid changes. Keep a record of when the gear oil was last changed so the next interval is easy to track.
Based on the 2026 Jeep Wrangler Owner's Manual (Front/Rear Axle Fluid, page 300; Maintenance Plans, pages 276, 278 and 281), read October 29, 2026.

Jeep Wrangler differential fluid FAQ
What differential fluid does a 2026 Jeep Wrangler use?
The 2026 manual recommends Mopar Gear & Axle Lubricant SAE 75W85 (API GL-5) for the front axle; SAE 75W140 (API GL-5) for the M200 rear axle (sales code DRZ); and SAE 75W85 (API GL-5) for the M220 rear axle (sales codes DRE/DRF).
Does a Wrangler with Trac-Lok need an additive?
Yes. Per the 2026 manual, models equipped with the Trac-Lok Limited Slip Differential require a friction modifier additive in the M220 rear axle.
How often should Wrangler differential fluid be changed?
On the 2026 2.0L, hybrid and 3.6L, the Maintenance Plan changes the front and rear axle fluid at 40,000, 80,000 and 120,000 miles only if the Wrangler is used for police, taxi, fleet, off-road or frequent trailer towing; otherwise it is inspected at 20,000, 60,000, 100,000 and 140,000 miles. On the 6.4L, it is inspected every 24,000 miles or 24 months and changed then for those uses or sustained high speed driving.
Do I need to check my Wrangler differential fluid regularly?
For normal service, the 2026 manual says periodic axle fluid level checks are not required. The axle exterior should be inspected when the vehicle is serviced, and the level inspected if gear oil leakage is suspected.
How full should a Wrangler differential be?
Per the 2026 manual, the lubricant should be approximately 1/8 inch (3 mm) below the bottom edge of the fill hole, with the vehicle level and supported by the axles. Add lubricant only at the fill hole.
Is transfer case fluid the same as differential fluid?
No. The 2026 manual lists Mopar ATF+4 for the transfer case and gear and axle lubricant for the axles.
