Jeep Wrangler Fuel Tank Size and Fuel Type

How many gallons does a Jeep Wrangler hold, and what gas should go in it? Here is what the 2026 Jeep Wrangler Owner's Manual lists for the approximate fuel capacity of the two-door, four-door and 4xe models, the octane each engine is designed for, the ethanol limit, and how refueling works on gas and hybrid models.

The short answer

The 2026 Jeep Wrangler Owner's Manual lists an approximate fuel capacity of 17.5 gallons (66 L) for two-door models, 21.5 gallons (81 L) for four-door models and 17.2 gallons (65 L) for 4xe models. The 2.0L and 3.6L engines are designed for 87 octane regular (on the 2.0L, 91 or higher allows optimal performance), and the 6.4L requires 91 octane premium or higher. Do not use E-85 or gasoline with more than 15% ethanol.

What gas a Jeep Wrangler takes, by engine

Octane ratings in the manual use the (R+M)/2 method shown on the pump. The manual lists fuel by engine:

EngineFuel selection in the 2026 manual
2.0L87 octane, 0-15% ethanol. The manual says 91 or higher octane premium allows the engine to operate to optimal performance, most noticeable in hot weather or under heavy load such as towing.
3.6L87 octane, 0-15% ethanol. Higher octane premium gasoline will not provide any benefit over regular.
6.4LPremium unleaded 91 octane only or higher, 0-15% ethanol (do not use E-85). Premium is required in this engine.

From the 2026 Jeep Wrangler Owner's Manual (Fuel Requirements, page 347; Fluids And Lubricants: Fuel Selection, page 350), read October 29, 2026.

The manual adds that a light knocking sound while using fuel of the required octane is not a cause for concern, but a heavy knocking sound means you should see a dealer immediately. Using gasoline with a lower octane than recommended can cause engine failure and may void the New Vehicle Limited Warranty.

Ethanol, additives and gasoline quality

The 2026 manual says not to use E-85, gasoline containing methanol, or gasoline containing more than 15% ethanol (E-15), and to watch pump labels, which should say if a fuel contains more than 15% ethanol. Using those blends may cause starting and drivability problems, damage critical fuel system components, cause emissions to exceed the applicable standard and/or turn on the Malfunction Indicator Light.

It recommends gasolines with detergents, corrosion and stability additives, and TOP TIER Detergent Gasoline when available. It does not recommend fuel additives sold as octane enhancers, recommends gasoline without MMT, and says indiscriminate use of fuel system cleaning agents should be avoided. If you notice hard starting, stalling or hesitation, it suggests trying another brand of gasoline before considering service.

From the 2026 Jeep Wrangler Owner's Manual (Fuel Requirements; Materials Added To Fuel; Do Not Use E-85 In Non-Flex Fuel Vehicles; MMT In Gasoline; Fuel System Cautions, pages 347 and 348), read October 29, 2026.

How to refuel a Jeep Wrangler

Gas models. The fuel filler cap is on the left side of the vehicle. Push on the fuel filler door to unlatch it, then follow the manual's steps:

  • Open the fuel filler door and remove the fuel cap by rotating it counterclockwise.
  • Fully insert the gasoline nozzle into the filler pipe and fill the vehicle.
  • When the nozzle clicks or shuts off, the tank is full. Wait five seconds before removing the nozzle to let excess fuel drain.
  • Reinstall the fuel cap, tightening it about a quarter turn until you hear one click, and close the fuel filler door.

4xe models. Put the vehicle in PARK and push the fuel door release button below the headlight switch. This starts a sequence that depressurizes the fuel system, and a message in the instrument cluster shows when the vehicle is ready to be fueled; the door should take about 15 seconds to open under normal conditions, and you then have 20 minutes to fuel. The fuel door pops away from the vehicle; rotate it open, remove the cap, fill until the nozzle clicks, wait five seconds, then replace the cap until it clicks and close the door. In certain cold conditions, ice may keep the door from opening: lightly push on it to break the ice and press the release button again. Do not pry on the door.

The manual also warns never to add fuel with the engine running, not to top off the tank after filling, and to always place portable fuel containers on the ground while filling them. On gas models, if the fuel filler cap is not tightened properly, the Malfunction Indicator Light will come on.

From the 2026 Jeep Wrangler Owner's Manual (Refueling The Vehicle — Gasoline Models; Refueling The Vehicle — Hybrid Models; Loose Fuel Filler Cap Message, pages 191 and 192), read October 29, 2026.

When the low fuel light comes on

Per the 2026 manual, the Low Fuel Warning Light turns on and a chime sounds when the fuel level reaches approximately 2.0 gallons (7.5 L), and the light stays on until fuel is added. A separate Fuel Level Sensor Failure Warning Light means a fuel level sensor failure; if it comes on, have an authorized dealer inspect it. On vehicles equipped with a Loose Fuel Filler Cap Warning Light, close the filler cap properly; if the light does not turn off, see an authorized dealer.
